AMD's new Radeon R9 290X launches today. Based on a new Hawaii GPU, the card promises record-breaking performance. Not only performance is impressive: With a price of $549, it's also the most affordable high-performance option, which will certainly put massive pressure on NVIDIA.

I think I know what card I'm getting :D

Let me checkout please.

No analog VGA outputs is a moot point for a thumb down. All cards just about come with a vga adapter.

The voltage part of this review just sold the card for me.

Can't wait.

$549 is a good price :)

Meh loud obnoxious no real killer bundle just yet as it sits it falls between 780 and Titan not exactly compelling only the price makes it a decent purchase. For those that plan to water cool the card no big deal. For a daily driver as is this card isnt very impressive. This is a card that should have launched with aftermarket coolers.

This is AMD's version of Fermi/GF100.

It seems like history keeps repeating itself. Sure, you get a card that is cheaper than its competitors for the same performance but you pay for it in power consumption and noise.

It's the same as the HD 2900 XT and GTX 480 (and more recently the 7970GE, to a lesser extent).

These must do well under water

There is no DAC therefore no analogue output AT ALL.

I had both the 2900XT and GTX 480 XD

so it beats the titan in high res in all games lol. XD

Nothing too surprising given the leaks. Though I was expecting better overclocking performance with that huge bus. Overclocked 780 and Titan owners will be feeling justified, not counting price. Wonder how people will feel about "uber" mode. That's really loud.

Except that HD2900XT was much slower than 8800GTX, about the same level with 8800GTS. GTX480 was faster than HD5870, but yeah the power consumption was much worse.

I can't say that missing the analog outputs should be a negative thing, because if someone buys a card like this, I think that his/her monitor isn't some analog monitor from the stone age..

(oh gosh I hate my English..)

Definitely getting this!

Time to retire my old qx9650+5870! Whole new rig baby!

Seems like it'll do well with custom cooling

Holy crap it thrashes the titan even at Metro Last Light.

Anyone gaming at anything lower 1980x1080 with this GPU is definitely doing it wrong.

Can't wait to get one, toss the stock cooler in the garbage and see what it can do with a full cover water block strapped to it. :)

It seams the cut-off is 95C aslong as you can keep it cooler than that it will keep overclocking itself.

Excellent review Wizz :) Shame its no different in watt consumption in blu ray playback then my 6970 :( But at $549 and the performance is or might for me be a slight upgrade Also does the new AM3+ AMD Boards even support crossfire over pcie? Goes to read crossfire one .......One thing before i go actually 2 ,It was great to see some newer games in your benchmarks,So is BF4 going to replace Bf3 in the tests and overclocking tests? Also how much of the power consumption could be fixed in drivers if at all?

290x + water block = manofthem 's next purchase(s) :D
(may have to wait a tad though for money's:()

Thanks W1zz :respect:

$549!! All I can say is thank you so much AMD, Christmas is coming early this year! :rockout:

Just got an auto notify email alert from Newegg, but cards are still not available, anyone has a direct link to preorder?

Does anyone know if the never settle bundle is also included?
