Out of interest what does $200 get you from AMD's current lineup?

A 380, so perhaps a 480 isn't actually that much out of the question at $200 price point, who knows, but 390/390x performance for $200 would be friggin awesome.... not too mention reduced power consumption :rockout:

most rumors before this came is that 5.5 TFLOP one would be 480x not 480.

Interesting, with the 380 being Tonga based it certainly isn't out of the question. They can put a large chunk of their current lineup to bed in one swift move, presumably including even Fiji.

The obvious caveat is "in VR", but if it performs well enough, who really cares.

Maybe, maybe not, but when it comes to VR they seemed to think the 980 Ti wasn't capable of 11 in the Steam VR test, and that most certainly is BS:

The good old Radeon Pro Duo, the Elephant in room.

Have an idea why AMD stayed away from the single high end gpu at this time. It has to with memory speeds available and this may be evident with the pascal cards. The gtx 1080 has 33% more CUDA cores than the 1070 but is only 23.5% faster in games. Despite the 1080 having gddr5x I think this may be due to the actual power of gpu being held back by the memory. It is gddr5x but it is new and at the bottom of the 10-14Gbs range for the technology.

The rumors months ago were that we would see HBM2 but that obviously is not ready yet. Perhaps AMD decided the memory available right now did match the higher gpu power made available by the 14/16nm ff process. Could be wrong here but just a thought.

970/980 Performance at 200 USD? If that's the target range of the GTX 1060 then it would have to be priced right (lel i wonder if there would be a Fermi edition of the 1060 as well)

No, the strategy was to target the high volume mainstream markets. Get relatively cheap cards into the hands of as many people as possible and build market share and mindshare. How the strategy pans out will depend on how quickly AMD can get product into the retail channel, sustain supply, meet the performance goals and whether Nvidia have given GP106 (GTX 1060) any kind of prioritization at TSMC.

EDIT: AMD's presentation

Surely that is a factor but perhaps memory availability could have been a cause as well. I'm just trying to make sense of relatively small performance gap between the 1080 and 1070 in relation to the actual power difference, which is even more pronounced when considering the 1080's higher core clocks (more tflops). Is micron's gddr5x not being up to par a plausible cause?

Interesting that the 480 is being sold as a 4GB and 8GB card. I presume the $199 pricing is for the 4GB version.
EDIT: It is.
Lel "your not gonna need a 700 USD video card to enjoy Doom at high framerate"
AMD still falling into the trap of measuring their worth by referencing the competing vendor.

Well so much for that. Didn't take long to devolve into Hewlett-Packard and Microsoft Windows 10 pitch

Copied the same basic layout as the GTX 970. Short PCB, PCI-E connector in an awkward place, overhanging blower

Buy 3 of this and do a Tri-fire, see if that comes close to a 1080 performance.

As it stands, you'll need to. :p

Crossfire though, eek.

If it takes 2 of these in crossfire to edge out a 1080 in a bench that favors AMD by allot ... i'd say the performance of one is WAY off nVidia's latest offerings. It's actually to be expected since these cards are priced in totally different leagues anyway. Let nVidia take the crown for the fastest cards while AMD is busy selling huge amounts of lower priced cards: i'd call that good business, if it does indeed happen!

I'd like to see the full specs + benches of polaris 11 (that's the slowest one, right?): depending on power draw, this could well be my next card, in like 4 or 5 months from now, after the launch price drops a bit.

Polaris 11 is a card you use in HTPCs and Servers to compensate for lack of graphics card. It'll only be able to handle very light gaming.

Don't get me wrong, Polaris 11 is great because the market for <75w cards is full of dinosaurs. It's finally getting refreshed.

I'm thinking Zen + Polaris may be the perfect HTPC combo.

Probably. Keen observers have already noted that the AotS benchmark comparison seems to show the the setups running at different game settings. Crossfired (and SLI for that matter) two lower tier cards generally represents better bang for buck than a single top tier card...when mGPU works, so hardly a revelation by Koduri.

A little surprising AMD didn't share any details of P11. Maybe it is one reveal a week?

You won't get a 8GB 480 for $199 though. That price is reserved for the 4GB version.
