AMD Radeon Software wrong version (Pro instead of Adrenalin)

Hi all,
I have since early September an HP Firefly 14 G10 A the version with the Ryzen 7 PRO 7840HS.
Since driver release 23.9.2 I started having problems with AMD software:
the driver automatically installs AMD Software: PRO Edition even though I downloaded the regular drivers and did not choose the Pro version in any way,
also tried with the preview drivers getting the same result.

I continued to use version 23.9.1 because it was working.
Yesterday I tried to format the PC but without success,
I still have the same problem with every version newer than 23.9.1 and now even the driver provided by HP (that seems to have been updated some week ago).
Tryed also Amernime (choosing, where possible, always Adrenalin as the software) getting the same problem.

I don't use auto detect and I always manually choose the driver from the AMD website in all my tests.
I've always used this link: AMD Ryzen™ 7 PRO 7840HS Drivers & Support | AMD until the link started providing, obviously wrong, Vega/Polaris driver
pretty much the same week I started having the problem.
The lastest version that i test (23.10.2) it's downloaded from Release Note page, for the old versions came from old downloads that I still have saved.

In between testing the versions, I repeated the entire Windows installation from 0 to make sure everything was deep clean (I tried in some cases even with W10).
Do you have any ideas?

Why untill 23.9.1 do I get the Adenalin version?
The CPU is a Pro version, but not the GPU, in fact, if you try to download from that page you can find Adrenalin download, not Pro as, for example, a Pro GPU as Radeon Pro W3100.

It's an APU, if the CPU is PRO, the GPU is too, it's a total package.

Ok i got it your point but:
-I forgot to specify that I get the Adrenalin software screen, red with all the info written Adrenalin, but with the Radeon Pro options.

-If I try to download and install the real Pro drivers I get error 182, configuration not supported (https://www.amd.com/en/support/kb/faq/gpu-kb182).

-I get the release version of the Adrenalin drivers, the Pro drivers have another release version.
As you see in the screenshot:

So the drivers from the release of this APU up to 23.9.1 (early September) have always released with wrong version from both HP and AMD?
And this is still a bad release because it's half Adenalin, half Pro.

I am not sure that this situation is the correct/optimal one.

Looking at the QuickSpecs at HP's website, it explicitly mentions Integrated AMD Radeon Graphics w/ Pro Graphics driver, alongside AMD Radeon™ 780M (For AMD Ryzen™ 9 Pro 7940HS and AMD Ryzen™ 7 Pro 7840HS).

If it is running the Radeon Pro drivers, it seems everything is running as it should.

You mean Pro Software, because Pro Driver didn't work (error 182), the driver you see in the first spoiler is still Adrenalin Driver.
I have Adrenalin Driver, Adrenalin Interface, with Pro Option, I see it as a pretty inconsistent situation.
Then from about May (when this APU is released) until the end of August, the driver was broken, because work completely as Adrenalin (from both AMD and HP)?

Sounds like an AMD situation alright (and that's unfortunate).

Don't get too hung up on it, it is unfortunate AMD don't do better at clearly making a distinction between them, but this also could be HP.

When you read Pro in an AMD product, it means literally, it means nothing for gaming, even though a Pro graphics driver will have nearly everything the usual gaming grade driver does too except for card tweaking IIRC.

I may have a solution. Open your graphics driver registry key with regedit, usually something similar to:

Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4d36e968-e325-11ce-bfc1-08002be10318}\0000

(if you don't know which one it is, open GPU-Z, advanced, general tab, and copy this)

Create a new DWORD (32-bit) entry called "KMD_IsGamingDriver" (without the quotes) and set this to "1". Reboot the machine, this should force the gaming version of Radeon Software to come up.

Thanks for the try, create the KDM_IsGamingDriver but after the reboot is still the same situation.
Yeah, I know, but some functions never show up in the Pro software (even with Adrenalin driver), example for anti-lag or AFMF for example, it's kinda annoying.

Well in that case all you can do for now is try a complete uninstall using AMD's own driver cleanup utility and full reinstallation, if the problem persists wait for when/if AMD bothers to fix it. Good luck

I think I found something like what you say, but little hevy, but it works now.

I have a desktop PC with AMD Adrenalin (23.10.2) that works correctly (Radeon RX 6650), I copy the whole folder and every key in this path (with export function):

Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4d36e968-e325-11ce-bfc1-08002be10318}\0000

I deleted the 0000 folder in the registry (I had to change the permissions to delete it completely) and then loaded the one from the desktop PC.

Okay, okay, I know I had more chances of destroying everything than getting this result, but it works!

Hopefully in the future I won't need this hideous workaround and will have an official fix.

Of course I need to do some more testing, but after a bunch of reboots it still seems to work.


P.S I forgot, after the first reboot I had to use the device manager to "update" the drivers, with those that were already installed (the only ones) and reboot.

I'll be honest, when I pressed restart, I thought for a moment and then I went to get the Windows installation USB stick, ready for disaster.
I'm trying the driver previews, I understand that I need the registry keys coming from a "healthy" PC for any driver update,
I absolutely need to check the whole structure to understand where the keystone is.

@matetod is this trick works with rdna gpu? im very disappointing from 23.x driver i can't install adrenalin driver. if i also force to install it i got the pro drivers without "Gaming" features.
for example in the new preview driver Frame Generation 2 is available for my gpu (i have ryzen 7 pro 7840u with 780m).....
i tried KMD_isGamingDriver dword set to 1, DDU in recovery mode and reinstall without internet but nothing change with latest driver (24.8.1)... i got always pro drivers.
is there a new way to force adrenalin or new "dword" that you may know?

yes, 780M is RDNA 3 but nothing found no ways.... maybe they changed something or (after few googling, i found all users that use the "trick" have "polaris or vega" instead rdna)

update: i also try some way (registry or windows settings) to change the cpu model but without success... that why exist two version

checked some installation exe parameter (maybe with something you could force it), i also opened a long ticket on AMD forum for this unbelievable behaviour with pro cpu.....

as i know many people on the web have the same issue...

watching the registry i found this record (attached)... maybe do it can be set to "1" (as well KMD_IsGamingDriver) to return to adrenalin?

another update.... i tried to tweak the config file of installation package without success (removing some hardware exclude, modify the conditions etc) without success...

Hi,
going forward with the tests i tried to edit the json and xml files to “remove the exclusion of this processor” (because i think there is a procedure/variable that if the processor falls in a certain list, it doesn't allow to install the adrenalin software but forces the pro version). so far no luck.... does anyone who knows about this have any idea how to get around the problem? it would also solve the request of many other users who searching on google have the same problem..
