AMD's upcoming Ryzen 4000 series "Vermeer" lineup of CPUs based on the new Zen 3 core is slated to launch sometime in late 2020, and we have information about the chipset support of 4th generation of Ryzen CPUs. The laptop manufacturer XMG, known for its crazy Apex 15 laptop with 16 core AMD Ryzen 3950X CPU inside, has posted a Reddit thread about its new laptop. In the thread, XMG has listed specifications of the laptop, and in one point it mentions support for Ryzen 4000 series of CPUs. XMG has written that the B450 motherboards will be supporting the next generation CPUs simply by microcode updates AMD will push to OEMs. XMG uses the B450 chipset in its laptops, so they are presumably going to offer some configurations with Ryzen 4000 CPUs in the future. This information is good news for everybody who has a motherboard with a B450 chipset as they can get a bit more mileage out of it.

I hope it's extended to the X470 series too.

Many knew about Zen3 being compatible with AM4 chipsets for 2 years now but some were negative towards our thought because of them being Intel fanboys and their brand never supported over 2 series of cpus for the same chipset, just because of greediness as AMD proved with Zen arch.

If it supports B450 it will support X470 as long as Mobo venders give us BIOS up dates.

Lol to the guys that spent hundreds of dollars for X570, whereas B450 is just as good.
It is not just processor you buy motherboard for. There are other aspects like PCI-e 4.0 for instance. Besides, nobody knows what would the support for the 3rd gen ryzen on the B450 look like. Maybe it will be way better to go with the new chipset instead due to performance or other.

Woooooooooo, my B450 ITX is hankering for a good 65W 4000 series

if B450 boards can support it, I'm sure as heck even the low-end A320 & high-end X470 chipsets would support it as both also uses the AM4 socket. More good news for me, I guess.

At a guess this is going to be similar to 3000 series support where some boards will have issues due to smaller BIOS chips - we may end up with BIOS that cut support for 1st gen and maybe even 2nd gen, to exclusively support 3k and 4k chips

Sure because 99% of B450 boards can totally handle an overclocked 3950X without cooking the VRM and have much more IO. Except they don't. X570 is not for running your Ryzen 5 1600 or even 3600 CPU's. Its for 3900X and 3950X owners who want beefy VRM's and plenty of IO with more M.2 slots. Plus features such as dual BIOS, dip switches, monoblocks etc.

I realize that this is relative to the fact that Intel had been ripping us off for years and stagnating, but AMD is pretty good to this community comparatively.

One thing mystifies me though.....I don't understand these people who pair, or want to pair, a 3900x or 3950x with a B450 board. How do you have $500 or $750 for a CPU but only $125 for a motherboard?

B450 doesn't support PCIe 4 which is a large no-no when you have a M.2 SSD PCIe 4.

Why PPC tense? You think it has changed and Intel is not ripping us off? Considering the prices for Intel CPUs, I think the ripping-off has never stopped.

Anyway, I only hope that the B450 will not limit the new Ryzens in any way. 3000 series work same as on 570x but will it be the same with the new Ryzens? I hope the new Ryzens will have same performance as on the motherboards with new chipset.

That really depends on your definition of "just as good". I have seen quite a few people having issues with the 3900x/3950x on b450 boards and let us not forget the whole issue regarding BIOS UI downgrades that quite a few of the 400 series boards suffered in order to fit the new AGESA binary blob that supported the Ryzen 3000 series...

I mean...I may hope so...

but with the new huge GPU coming taking advantage of PCIE4.0 and very fast NVME...
like what's inside the next XBox and PS5
and the games taking advantage of this more and more...
yep, its a good move to have an x570 MB!

That's why I got the MAX model of my MSI board because the non-MAX one had size-restricted UEFI because of some idiocy of MSI's engineers. Most board manufacturers didn't have that problem at all. Forward thinking is important in industry.

The only thing I would see is PCIe 3 being kind of slower (Intel may still be on 3 by then) and VRMs if the next gen needed more power, which I doubt.
Anything else performance related comes with the CPU, which are Memory-Controller and I/O stuff PCIe and such.

B550 is just a relabled B450 with PCIe 4 enabled for the direct to CPU lanes and mobo suppliers will love it because they can use their old designs with very little changes.
X570 was never for the masses because of the high TDP and thereby high noise envelope.

It was an example. There's more stuff there to consider getting new chipset even like the X570. It is not just graphics and CPU but also SSD's that use PCI-e 4.0. You can't justify a product, not being for the masses by noise level or TDP. Don't you think that's a bit of a stretch? There are merits having x570 boards you know. If you don't see them, this means this one is not for you.
Not saying using an older mobo like 450 for the upcoming Ryzens is a bad thing. Actually the opposite.

I built a >1600€ machine and better got me a good B450 board than a X570, just because of the TDP/fan, I mean hell no.
And there are X570 boards with worse VRMs than some B450 boards, got me a MSI B450 MORTAR TITANIUM which is now modded with a 256 MBit SPI flash and the MORTAR MAX UEFI ;-)

Correction: -$125 for a motherboard. :p
Cheaper non-Strix non-Aorus Ultra Tomahawk Pro RGB Extreme Hero boards have lower resale value. Paid 100 euros for an AB350 Pro4 when it was relevant, can't expect to sell it for more than 30-35 now to be honest, and even then, are there really too many people who need a used B350 mobo? My bad, but still annoying. Maybe these people have similar logic. And hey, it's not like there aren't other options! Even if not endorsed by the chipmaker. (Spoiler alert: coffeemod. It has its precautions, and not many people want to deal with that... but certainly more than those who want to buy a B350 board in this day and age).
It doesn't help much that the X570 UD is 150 euros, X570-P is 180, and even then some will say these are gonna set a 3950X on fire. As if anything except the 850-euro Aorus Xtreme would.
Oh, and the annoying little fan. (Even if semi-passive). Flashy, yes, tacky, yes, another point of failure, h3ck yes.

Good to see confirmation of this... nice!

They should work on X370 and B350 also, that was the promise. That is why I bought my X370. AM4 is AM4, the chipset should not matter.
I wouldn't hold my breath on any 3 series chipset supporting these.............

X570 was never for the masses because of the high TDP and thereby high noise envelope.
Que? High noise envelope? Do you own one of these boards? Read any reviews? Most of these are idle and when they do kick on, can't hear them over the system fans. I reviewed almost 2 dozen of those boards, lol... TWO were 'loud' and one was fixed with a bios update. That isn't to say some others may be... but the noise thing for the chipset is played out...and who gives a hoot about a TDP increase on it... come on now.

So those of us who own a x300 series can take a walk and buy a new motherboard or what, if so then where's the backwards compatibility.
