Fun fact: while this is highly sought after for its gaming performance, TPU testing says it's only ~5% faster than my aging 12600k at 4k.
Anything past 1440p becomes great equalizer.

Let scalpers sit on inventory they won't be able to move.

Being a gamer today you've got a lot of viable CPU options. If the one you want is too expensive it doesn't matter. Get the cheaper one and put the remainder of the money toward the GPU.

The 5800x3D was a great CPU, but AMD deliberately nuked it to force AM4 owners to upgrade to AM5, but the platform cost of upgrading to AM5 is well over $1000, only for a 30% performance improvement, it's just not worth it.

Scalpers really suck, it does ruin it for us normies to see this happening. Best thing we can do is just not buy it from anyone except verified stores/sellers and not the scalpers.

I mean to be honest if I was buying a CPU right now, that's probably the one I would buy.

I've only upgraded to that 'aging' CPU like a half year ago and most likely I will sit on it for years to come. 'I'm not a high refresh rate FPS chaser tho so ye its plenty enough for me + I don't run high end GPUs either'

It's all about priorities and means (money etc.). If gaming is Your hobby, or maybe even Your job - You see no problem spending big money on it every 1-2 years.

Scalping though... Hate it! It's half their fault GPU prices went so high with last 2 generations...
As a job it’s somehow acceptable. But usually in such a case, you will be one of the first with access to the new CPU.

Who didn't see this coming?
Sold out in Europe
£700 ($900) on Ebay here in the UK
Me, I am not interested in CPUs only with 8 core.
But hindsight - it was pretty obvious.
This CPU will sell well for at least 1~1.5 years!

Do not buy from scalpers, AMD has enough 9800x3d supply coming to the USA, if scalpers dont sell in few days then they will sell it cheaper and lose money in the process.

PC gaming isn't an emergency. People willing to pay 600$/€ this CPU need help. :slap:

[P.S. It's not a negative comment about the CPU.]
Agree. They are baboons, not only paying much more for it, but giving scalpers reason to keep doing it.

I don't think Intel has a chance of ever catching up to AMD in gaming if they don't come up with their own 3D V-cache implementation, I wonder if there are patents preventing them form doing that, it's very bizarre because they did something similar to this with the 5775C and in a totally idiotic move they abandoned that idea.

Till then the pricing situation will remain problematic.

I hadn't made up my mind if I was going to build a new PC until AMD launched the 9800X3D. Truth be told I am still very happy with my 5800X/6800XT combo. But I ordered the 9800X3D today though it's on backorder until December. I would rather wait than pay a scalper for one.

Now to play with builds on pcpartpicker for a couple months while I wait for new micro atx am5 motherboards.

Scalping only exist because product manufactures are pricing their products too low. AMD should have announced that this processor will have an MSRP of say $599 for the first month or two, and then be dropped to $479. I would much rather have AMD & its retail partners getting some extra cash than an extra, unneeded reseller.

kind of glad i kept my current 7800x3d and 7900 xt, decided to keep for them life, this scalping stuff is only going to get worse over the years. i plan to upgrade someday, but yeah with the tech tariffs incoming in the next 4 years, best to have backups in-case things get too pricey.

i'm in no rush to upgrade, especially as a 1440p gamer. :lovetpu:

Fun fact: while this is highly sought after for its gaming performance, TPU testing says it's only ~5% faster than my aging 12600k at 4k.
Have you read any other reviews?
Have you seen application performance?
Have you seen that TPU tested with 23H2?

Right. And then complain how the first buyers were screwed.
At least think a bit outside the box: instead of MSRP, just have (Dutch) auctions for the first batches :p

Scalping is indifferent to pricing, even if amd would release for a 10k dollar would still be people to buy that and then resell if they knew amd could not supply enough. Scalpers are smart they will only buy if they see the product will have a high demand and the manufacturer can not replenish it fast enough.

I have not.

We already know this is not great value as a general-purpose CPU. It does well if the data happens to fit in the cache, but you can get more cores for the same $$$ and get better overall application performance.

Riiight... So 7% faster?

I definitely agree the 9800X3D is not great value as a general-purpose CPU. The 9900X is $100 cheaper, readily available, better application performance being 12C/24T, yet still has great gaming performance just not industry leading (it's only 15% faster than 9900X/265K, edit: hmm other pages are showing more like 30% higher). That is a "great value" at this point and 265K will be too when it price corrects down. 9800X3D is top for gaming but a rip off right now.
