Technically it has more surface area then the 5870s stock heat sink, it should perform better.
Even my $10 dollar form OC PC3 is better than the AMD stock CPU cooler, doesn't mean it is good. :shadedshu

This probably costs less eh?

And still offers pretty decent cooling results.

My load temps are under 50 c on my 3850 and it idles are 32, I have the same heat sink but with the 80mm fans.

Not quite a piece of crap : ]

Cost less for them maybe as it's the same price as the 2900 cooler was. Cheap skates.

You read my mind dude!
This is what I am thinking right now, this thing is only good for 120W of heat.

Well it is indeed sub-par if you want to slap it on an OCed 5870. :shadedshu
That web page on AC uses the 4870 as an example, but the 5870 is closer to the 4890 in heat output and power consumption.

I'd buy one ASAP if it did 240w. Like hell yeah loved that thing on my 2900XT. I guess they don't want it too good.

In the end 120w is a joke, Shits going backwards lol. Dam shame my Accelero XTREME 2900 dont fit on my 4890 :(.

So just how much heat does a 5870 output?

Well the power usage is around 188W were as the 2900XT was 220w. BUT the people who change cooler typically overclock the cards so the power usage going go up some.

Surly it's higher than 120w. Anyways cooler the better right why else would it need that big ass heatsink\fan in the 1st place.

It looks like all they did is move the heatpipe to the other side of the cooler. :respect:

That's a big plus for me because I love the look of after market coolers that show off the heatpipes in the front.

Is thermal output the same as power draw though?

because if it was that would mean the card was outputting nothing but heat and converting energy to heat near with 100% efficiency.

It must be much lower then power draw.

For example average CPU rated for 65w of thermal energy, under load draws 130 watts of power.

Thoughts?

The vrm cooling is not good enough on these at all tho.

The memory and vrm sinks suck for the hotter 4800 series and 5800 series

Isn't there wasted power too like PSU's for example ?. Isn't that what a lot of the heat is ?. Sure some one could explain it more in depth :p.

Same old story with them all... Just cheap asses like the rest which is why i use the stock plate with mine.

Watt is the measurement for power not energy. A watt is equal to 1 Joule per Second.

Well, the power draw (electrical energy) does not completely covert into heat (thermal energy).
When converting energy there is always an efficiency factor.
A nuclear power plant is around 33% efficient in converting to electricity.
A light bulb convert less than 15% into light and 85% into heat.

The purpose of a CPU is not to convert electricity into heat.
So a CPU is pretty efficient if we assume the rest of the energy is actually used for work.
(Lets not mention the Netburst :nutkick:)

Yeah so I'm not going loony.

The thermal output of the 5870 should be less then 120w, unless its ONLY making heat lol

Now if only I could work out just how much heat output it has precisely then we'd no how much head room we have to play with using this budget VGA cooler.

That will soon become a physics class I recon :p
The only way I remeber of how it works is that we need to know the specific heat capacity of the materials....:respect:

My point efficiency how good is the card doing this even more so after some heavy overclocking.

I have had 2 Twin Turbo units. 1 on my 8800GTS G92 & 1 on my 4870.

but IMO these should have been brought out a lot sooner - the Twin Turbo units have been out for a while & it doesnt support more upto date powerful cards the only 1 on the list is the 4890. support is pityful for newer Nvidia cards 240's are rehashes of 8800GTs so no 'high-end' support there,
