ASUS Announces New ROG Swift OLED 4K Gaming Monitors at CES 2022

ASUS has today announced two new 4K OLED gaming monitors during their ROG CES 2022 livestream with the ROG Swift OLED PG48UQ/PG42UQ. The two models measuring 42-inches and 48-inches feature a 120 Hz refresh rate with a 1,000,000:1 contrast ratio and 0.1 ms GTG response time. The OLED panels cover 98% of the DCI-P3 color gamut and are cooled with a custom heatsink and internal thermal layout. The monitors both include HDR10 and 10-bit color support along with an anti-glare micro-texture coating. The onboard connectivity includes dual 48 Gbps HDMI 2.1 ports supporting Variable Refresh Rate and Auto Low-Latency mode in addition to x2 HDMI 2.0, x1 DisplayPort 1.4, and USB hub. The ROG Swift OLED PG48UQ & PG42UQ will be available to purchase worldwide in 2022.

120Hz is unfortunately slow.

Exactly this. LG's oleds have a bunch of tweaks that make them perform a bit better too. Not to mention they go on sale all the time. So it seems like it will be the same story as Gigabyte 48" Oled vs the C1 with the same panel: not worth the price over just getting the tv.

It's not slow, OLED is different from LCD. It doesn't need overdrive for 120Hz, so it doesn't overshoot/ghost.

Unfortunately, it's Asus.

Not talking about the pixels/panel - the panel itself is very fast (i have a CX and I love it) but they have displayport, and could potentially push the oled beyond 120hz to 144 hz / 165 hz etc. 120Hz is no issue for the panel - faster Hz will look even better.

I think oled is pretty limited by displayport and hdmi specs tbh. Would be nuts to see a 240hz OLED 4k panel.

That may be, but do you feel the CX is sluggish at 120Hz? I have a CX, too, but I don't use it as a monitor.

Compared to the 240hz Samsung VA thats sitting in the closet atm he CX is a bit sluggish in simple games (league/ CS:GO / valorant etc.) comparatively (but it looks so so so much better). I think because there is no ghosting and the pixel transition times are so fast the 120hz is really holding the OLED back. If HDMI allowed for 240hz, these screens could do it no problem. The other va screen is faster but flawed in so many ways (pixel inversion, colors, smearing etc.)

Input lag is fine, it's really just very fast motion where you can tell the 240 hz is smoother.

Maybe a 1440P 27" 240Hz Oled with HDR would be the perfect gaming monitor.

No big deal. ASUS announces a new monitor at CES every year but then it takes them another 1-1.5 years to actually release it.

And with a price tag more expensive than a large OLED TV that does it all anyway.
 
How are they going to justify the Asus tax over the 42 inch C2

For now. The year is just starting. So it's more like 12900KS + 3090 Ti + 42" OLED. Later in th year Zen 4 will take the crown back and Samsungs QD-OLED is still the wildcard here. Plus next generation RDNA 3 and 40 Series Lovelace GPU's that make 3090 Ti look slow.

5800X3D and 12900KS are not launched yet but have been announced.

AMD has been prepping a faster 6900XT for a while now. It will come with faster 18 Gbps GDDR6 memory and the GPU will be clocked higher than before. It is basically an overclocked 6900XT just like RTX 3090 Ti is an overclocked 3090.

Samsung's 175 Hz QD-OLED is more preferable personally speaking. I am very happy we are finally getting >144 Hz OLEDs. Can't wait for 240 Hz or even 300/360 Hz OLEDs in the future.

I guess you are already on RTX 4090 Ti :roll:. Jokes aside unless you play CSGO or something ( at which point i don't see why you are seeking for a 4K OLED panel ) not many GPUs on this planet can drive AAA titles above 120fps so what's the fuss about ?

LG is going to bring a 42'' C2 this year and i bet my money it will be much cheaper than the ASUS premium .

Yes, but it won't have G-Sync or DisplayPort. Then again, if it's significantly cheaper, that may not matter.
Plus, last I checked Asus still had monitors they announced two years ago in the pipeline...

I like single player games at 80-110FPS and multiplayer games like - quake champions/ CS:GO / R6 siege / league of legends / F1 2021 / Forza at 165 - 240+ fps and a 3080 is fully capable of doing that.

LG's newer OLED TVs have gsync and freesync premium support over hdmi2.1 with VRR support (since CX generation anyway, works with my 55CX and rtx3070)

It won't have DP that's for sure but it will have many HDM 2.1 ports so it's ok . It will be G-Sync compatible for sure !

Don't know which forza you are playing but on Horizon 5 a 3080 should be getting below 80 fps at 4K , as for the rest yeah not exactly AAA titles and not titles that would benefit from 4K because of outdated graphics . Don't get me wrong im not judging your those titles but the point i was trying to make is that on graphically challenging games which would benefit from an 4K OLED panel you are likely not going to hit well above 120 fps .

Oh I completely understand -- and it's a valid point. I also use this monitor for work so it's a bit of an 'everything' monitor. Sitting a bit further back the text is much crisper than a 1440P (which is great for coding/ work/ having a zoom window in one quadrant while doing stuff in others). The real estate is nice. The HDR gaming is unbelievably nice.

The only drawback is when I do want to play some competitive games, I would have to switch to a 1440P 240hz when the OLED could also serve that purpose well. That's why I think the 120Hz holds it back a bit - and because the input latency is so low and the pixel transitions are so fast, knowing that the panel itself could easily display more frames makes me want to see what a 240hz OLED 4k would look like.
