Need a break from the relentless AMD coverage? The ROG MAXIMUS XI HERO (WiFi) is a premium Z390 motherboard from ASUS that promises top-tier performance and a classic ROG aesthetic. AMD might have stolen the show this year, but Intel still carries an edge at the top end of gaming performance.

Top premium = 4 + 2 phases :kookoo:

You mention the SPDIF out.. does the audio quality benchmark also reflect that output?
Or is it not applicable?
I would be generally interested, how SPDIF output quality is affected by the ALC chips and implementation.

How does Asus justify the insane price for this premium mid-range board? Or is it just the 50% ROG-tax?

BTW The Prime X570-P uses almost the exact same VRM.

In the world where Maximus XI Apex exists, Hero is a bad choice.

Asus has said officially, they will not be shipping the Apex XI to the USA or Canada, they even advise North American enthusiasts to purchase from the UK and run without a warranty, I've seen many email responses.

Just ramble over to the ROG forums and find out. Oh wait, the ROG forums have been abandoned by the administration since May 2019. No Praz, No Silent Scone, No Shimino, No Raja, even the awesome and amazing HiVizMan returned for two months and got sick and fed up with Asus, and left. Looks like only a handful of talented ROG enthusiasts are assisting other enthusiasts, what has happened to the great and mighty ROG?

Sometimes you can find super Elmor in the OCN forums and ask an ROG board specific question, but he also got sick and fed up and left Asus, geez what are we supposed to do?

For those of us who simply cannot sleep at night without a full manufacturer's regional warranty, like me, :p Go grab a Z390 DARK, the boards are sometimes out of stock for two weeks - three weeks at a time everywhere - right now EVGA and Amazon have a few.
Here's hoping the Apex 12 Comet Lake is an E-ATX superboard and available to purchase in the US and Canada! :toast:

If not, I'll be picking up a Z490 DARK. lol :)

I am seeing a decent $175 motherboard here with middling performance and an enormous amount of tax added for the ROG branding, bolt on decorative metal and RGBLED shenanigans.

It wouldn't sting quite as much if it wasn't a worse performer than the Asrock Phantom Gaming 7 costing $100 less.

I also find it comically awful that a $275 2019 motherboard has a single USB-C port and no more M.2 slots than a €99 Gigabyte H170 board I picked up almost four years ago, although that's not a dig as Asus exclusively; Boards with more than two slots are rare and USB-C, especially with thunderbolt, is something that has been especially slow to permeate the desktop motherboard market. Meanwhile, it's getting hard to buy a phone or laptop without USB-C or Thunderbolt!

Pretty much ... was a time I didn't mind the tax on the premium board .... great BIOS, for RMA they ship replacement and after you install, you send old one back, they answered phone. Now they $50 - $75 above the competiton and don't measure up features wise.

LoL I think it's tasteful, elegant in it's understated looks, with just a touch of RGB active. There's almost no visible cabling and quality parts. I love clean builds.

I have an easy $1200-1500 just in my loop on my system, it's all Norprene hoses, the only leds are UV to give a touch of glow, the fans are black, or Noctua and hidden... :pimp:

I must have missed something, why are all the mods leaving the ROG forums? Is asus just sick of serving the US market? Why wouldnt they release their halo board here?

weird seeing a review of the board i am using, mainly because it was released for a long time already.

ASUS will not ship Apex because they hope to Americans pay Formula or Extreme much higher price.
