ASUS Rolls Out Prime TRX40-PRO S Motherboard

ASUS today rolled out the Prime TRX40-PRO S socket sTRX4 motherboard for 3rd gen Ryzen Threadripper HEDT processors. This board is part of a mini-refresh of the company's sTRX4 product-stack, beginning with the ROG Zenith II Extreme Alpha, the more recent ROG Strix TRX40-XE Gaming, and now the Prime TRX40-PRO S. Launch of the three boards is triggered by the niche of enthusiasts that likes to overclock their Ryzen Threadripper 3990X 64-core/128-thread processors.

While the older Prime TRX40-PRO is perfectly capable of running- or even overclocking the 3990X, the new PRO S is better suited for the task, and comes with bolstered 16-phase CPU VRM with 70 A power stages, same ones found on the original ROG Zenith II Extreme, while the Extreme Alpha has been amped up with 90 A power stages. ASUS upgraded the ROG Strix TRX40-XE Gaming the same way. The board's feature-set is otherwise identical to that of the original Prime TRX40-PRO. The Prime TRX40-PRO S is expected to be priced around the $430-mark.

On the 3rd "DIMM" slot right of the CPU socket. It is ac tually an add in card (pretty swanky too).

Perhaps I'm missing something here, but except for cooling purposes or just to have a 3rd one, why exactly would I want an m.2 drive sticking upwards from my mobo, where 1 slip of the hands could result in a destroyed drive and/or socket connector ??????

I like the fact that they didn't put a stupid whiny fan on the VRM, instead they made it optional, and include a bracket for it. M.2 stand seems weird though.

There is also the fact that the WiFI M2 module seems to sit in front of the PCiex8 slot.

It's more then likely that Asus did it as a means to conserve space on the motherboard with respect to the features they wanted to pack in to the form factor. Asus could also have just went with something like extended ATX. Its not the first time Asus has done this BTW. They have probably been doing this M.2 riser for a couple of years now on select boards.

Why anyone would want this type of M.2 riser, I couldn't say,.....

I would'nt want it as is, but if it was in different location on the mobo, out of the way where it would be less likely to get fubarred, it might be ok...

I may be wrong, but wasn't this the intended mounting method for those so-called "U2" drives & connectors, the ones that never gained any ground in the consumer pc market ???

Personally, I think a pcie adapter card is a much better solution, even though it would use up a slot, but still....

And IIRC, some mobo mfgr's have included those with some mid-to-higher-end boards here & there, yes ?

Out of curiosity if one of the M.2 drives has to be mounted vertically on a bracket what is the height? I am planning on mounting this or a gigabyte MB which doesn't need to do this, in a 2U server enclosure so can't afford it to hit the cover.

It looks to support the 22100 so it's a little bit over 10cm tall.

Thanks makes sense. Guess I'll be mounting my m.2 non 22100 without the bracket. Hope that's not going to be a n issue.
