ASUS Triple-fan STRIX Cooler Pictured, Debuts with GTX 980 Ti

ASUS' new generation triple-fan STRIX cooling solution was up on display at Computex. This gargantuan cooler will make its debut with the GeForce GTX 980 Ti STRIX OC, and is designed to tame the 250W TDP chip, by staying completely silent until the chip breaches a 65°C temperature threshold, and staying low-noise beyond that. It features a very large aluminium fin-stack, to which heat drawn directly from the GPU die is conveyed by 10 mm-thick nickel-plated copper heat pipes. The heatsink is ventilated by three 100 mm fans, with independent speed control using ASUS GPU Tweak tool. The GTX 980 Ti STRIX features a huge PCB that's 1.5x the standard add-on card height; and features a back-plate. It will ship with a 15% factory-overclock.

Looks very big, to be honest I would have preferred a 2 fan design with a triple slot cooler like the DirectCU HD6950 had, easier to fit in small cases and also looked a beast.

I'm looking at replacing my strix 970 with this, and it looks like it is no taller than what i have, however it does look longer. shame it's only a 15% overclock, I was hoping to have a overclock equivalent to the zotac amp extreme, which has another 100 mhz on this. I know you can use software but would rather not jack with it. Hard to go with anything else when most of my computer time is not gaming, rather working, and don't want fans spinning when they don't need to be. keeps the card looking new and increased the life of the fans. Reading the description of the gigabyte windforce, it had "new technology to allow silent cooling, i wonder if that fans stop with that one.... no word on clock rate, but the PCB seems more palatable

Some cards already on sale and actually in stock in the UK ..... only reference designs though so far although looking at the "pre-order" list the Zotac Extreme Amp edition looks the tastiest of the bunch so far with boost clocks of 1355mhz.

Naaaa there are already 2 x EVGA models and the Zotac "Artic Storm" (TitanX Silver shroud cooler) edition models listed as higher.

where is this pre-order at? i don't even see prices, found it, nvm, does the gaming g1 gigabyte card stops the fans at idle, their wording is "The new silent semi-passive fan profile allows gamers to enjoy gameplay in absolute silence when the system is running light or idle."

edit: gigabyte does say the fans won't spin until above 65c!

That's exactly the kind of design they should have used on their R9 290 cards, instead of the half-baked DCU II design they went for. I hope we'll see that cooler on the new AMD line and that it will be on par or superior to Sapphire's Tri-X design (by far one of the best of its class).

As for this card, I'm surprised to see this kind of gigantic cooler on a GM200 since EVGA and MSI reused the design of their 980 cards... to me the point of nvidia's current gen is that you don't need to have an oversized card to get a well-cooled, powerful GPU. But it looks cool nonetheless.

Red... "ROG" red or ASUS red which is a darken red

IIRC the two fan STRIX cooler made it's debut on the GTX780, considering a reference GTX780 has the same 250w TDP as a Titan-X it's reasonable to assume a factory overclocked GTX780 and a factory overclocked GTX980ti will have similar heat production. So the three fan cooler should be an improvement/addition not a requirement.
