Yeah, you'll get better sound quality. X-Fi becomes an option in games like BF2, and EAX usually works, but for some games it doesn't (Doom 3 is one of them). It doesn't appear to have an upmixing feature (generally useful for people who want to upmix stereo music to 5.1), but I hear you can get that with modified drivers.

If your sound is distorting at max volumes. thats usually an issue with your speakers not the soundcard itself.

On some rare occasions, op amps do go south and will start to destort at REALLY REALLY low levels. but if your cranking your speakers up and it distorts -- get a better set of speakers with more wattage if you want it loud

Also having Xonar DG. Bought it cuz ALC888 chip sucks terribly. I know that it isn`t kinda professional opinion and maybe it`s a self-deception, BUT - it`s a great feature when Xonar emulates usual mp3 into 5.1 sound. Yeah I know it`s just an emulation, but anyway!

its not emulation. its called 'upmixing' most audio cards have this feature. unfortunately even though built in realtek audio can do it. the feature is disabled on driver level. and there's no option in the audio control panel to turn it on

I find the Xonar DG distorts at high volume—not speaker volume, but driver volume level. I keep it at 40% to eliminate clipping. This can be a good thing though... if you have some quiet tracks, you can boost the volume up higher to get louder sound. As long as the tracks are at a low volume, I can go higher than 40% to make up for it. A great way to test is to use Audacity and record with the "Wave" feature, with the "show clipping" box ticked.

I do the same. keep Soundcard volume between 40-45% And crank up my z5500's. never had to turn these speakers up over 50% To get the room shaking
