ATI Radeon HD 4830 to be Launched this October

At this point, ATI has a product to counter NVIDIA in every segment barring some gaps, such as the GeForce GTX 260 (216 SP) at $299 and the GTX 280 itself at its low price, GeForce 8800/9800 GT in their price ranges and the GeForce 9600 GSO.

The entry of Radeon HD 4850 X2 aims to disturb the market position of the GeForce GTX 280. To compete with the 8800/9800 GT and 9600 GSO, ATI is preparing a new down-scale graphics processor called RV770LE. The GPU has 480 stream processors and carries the brand name Radeon HD 4830. It will sport 512 MB of GDDR3 memory. Upon launch, ATI's partners would be free to launch it at speeds that suit their product lines. This GPU launches sometime in October.

Well, I was just about to buy a 4670, but if this thing launches at around $110 (and is a good bit faster than a 3850/70), I might buy it instead. If it'll ever come to market (unlike the HD "3830").
 
So it is a defective RV770 core with parts disabled?
 
Yeah, just as 8800 GS is defective G92 with 32 SP's disabled :rolleyes:

Yes, we all know the list of parts that do this is too long to write out here, I'm not concerned with it, I just wanted to confirm. The 8800GT/9800GT is a defective G92 too, and it is an amazing card. I don't really care, I just wanted to know if it was a completely new core or not as ATi has seemed to stop cutting down defective cores and using them in lower cards.

Just a quick list(off the top of my head) of cards that have come to light using cut down defective cores:

It boils down to the transistor count. If it has the same count as the RV770, you're right, it's just a RV770 that ranked low when binning, that went into making the RV770LE. Another bit is that the number "770" remained next to RV, so it's more likely that the transistor count is the same.
 
think it will be "upgradable" to a full 4850 :roll:
 
So.... does this mean I can expect my 4850x2 in October? The suspense is killing me.
 
has to be priced
much lower than a 4850 for it to be commercial, otherwise why not get a 4850

could be good to crossfire with a 48xx card cheaper than getting another 4870 or 4850

The HD3830 actually made it to the market as HD3690:slap:
But it is only avaliable in China and nearby regions.:roll:

I had no idea the gtx260 (both the 192 and the 216) were defective cores.

This looks like a steal for my HTPC Im building.

May be very overclockable and can come upto 4850 speeds:D

hmm if this has less power requirements should I wait for this. I am sick of waiting, so wanting to get rid of my x800GTO on my quad machine.

At 128-bit, it would be way too crippled to face a 8800 GT, given that it's carrying 480 shaders. 192 is impossible since it's known this is carrying 512M memory...leaves 128bit and 256bit. So I'd say 256-bit. 256 / 32 (bus width per chip) = 8 (no of chips on the board). 512 (total memory size) / 8 = 64 MB (memory size per chip).

so in that case 4830 OCd = 4850 almost? That will be great.
