Eurogamer - Battlefield 4 dev DICE on Commander Mode and the importance of 60fps

Buy the next-generation version of Battlefield 4 and you'll get the "full Battlefield experience", developer DICE has told Eurogamer.

The Swedish developer has used the PC version of the game, which as Battlefield 3 players know features huge 64-player battles and, if your computer is up to it, 60 frames per second visuals, as the target for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions of Battlefield 4, due out later this year.

Battlefield 4 on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One includes 64-player battles and 60fps visuals, unlike the console versions of Battlefield 3 and the current-gen versions of Battlefield 4.

Battlefield executive producer Patrick Bach said getting the next-gen versions of Battlefield 4 to 60fps was a priority for the development team because it wanted to recreate the PC experience in the living room.

"We have a very complicated game with a lot of moving parts," Bach said. "We had to decide, yes, we will do this in 60fps. Everything else is secondary. We know the game is great when you have 64 players and destruction, and if we could get what we had on PC for a long time in your living room with a pad, wouldn't that be amazing? That's what we're aiming for."

The extra horsepower of the next-gen consoles has allowed DICE to up the player count to 64 for multiplayer, matching the PC version. Current-gen players, however, are stuck with 24.

"They [next-gen console players] will experience another level of chaos they haven't seen before," Bach said. "12 versus 12, you can keep track of quite a few people, but only so many. When you get to 32 versus 32, that's when it becomes hard to keep track of the other team, when it feels like there are more things going on than just around me and what I can control.

"That's the experience we always wanted to get to with the consoles without sacrificing the other core pillars of the franchise."

64-player multiplayer and 60fps means next-gen console players are "getting the full Battlefield experience", Bach said.

"It lies in the title: Battlefield. You want it to feel like a proper war and that the things that are happening on the map, even though you're not a part of the battle, you can see the battle going on and you can choose to go to this other fight than the fight I'm just in. When you have 32 versus 32, that's when that starts to happen for real."

"Commander Mode was slightly flawed in Battlefield 2. We've been working on it for some time figuring that out, and I think we've got it."

Battlefield 4: Official Commander Mode Trailer - Y...

Meanwhile, Commander Mode, last seen in Battlefield 2142 and, before that, Battlefield 2, returns for Battlefield 4.

Commander Mode, which displays a tactical, top-down view of the battlefield, lets one player per side gather intel, issue vehicle and supply drops and go on the offensive by triggering devastating attacks either from PC, console or a tablet.

Bach said DICE had spent some time trying to work out Commander Mode's "tricky design", which, he admitted, was flawed.

"Commander Mode was flawed in Battlefield 2," Bach said. "A lot of people thought it was fun to play, but they also felt it was this thing they could do on the side, like a jump in, jump out experience. Some people felt it ruined their experience on the ground when they had a bad Commander. So we had to fix those design flaws before we started to implement it. We've been working on it for some time figuring that out, and I think we've got it."

The focus of Battlefield 4's Commander Mode is that Commanders play against each other rather than with their team. Commanders have their own scoring and persistence, and use what Bach describes as "the pieces on the chess board" to win the game. "So, if I'm a good Commander and I help my team to take flags, I will get more toys to play with," he said.

When Commanders go on the offensive they can trigger the devastating Gunship. "It feels very cool when you see the text on the screen when you're on the ground and it says, 'Gunship above'," Bach enthused.

"When that spawns in you think, 'okay, I can't be in the open any more. I need to go under something because I'm very exposed.' Especially for snipers on the roof - they get very scared when it happens and you see the big shadow over the whole battlefield.

"It's really cool."

E3 Live Stream Highlight: Spectator Mode in Battle...
Available on all versions of the game is the new Spectator Mode, which lets players watch a match in progress.

You can follow any player in third-person or first-person view, see the entire map from a top-down perspective and fly around the world using a free cam. From there you can place five cameras and toggle between them. This, Bach says, gives players virtual TV sets, and on next-gen consoles you can use their in-built recording functions to make movies.

"We see people doing that on YouTube already, but mostly for PC. Now you can do it on console."

This should also be useful for eSports, Bach continued, because you'll be better able to scrutinise matches and have referees. "It's very positive for us."

If the PS4 allows KB/M and XB1 follows, I don't see any reason they couldn't think about it more. Only limitation would be that console players would still be limited to lower sized servers (but then those options would be more open to PC players, so many 64 players servers, not many smaller out there).

Console version will be running 64 player servers as well.

Except for the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions which will still be limited to 24. New consoles get 64 man servers and 60 FPS.

Yeah I seen that, then seen 24 player, didn't look at it anymore, thought that was maybe a typo. But was the old consoles I guess that were limited. So hopefully we see KB/M support for consoles, it'll only be good for the PC community, though those out there of the console community not using KB/M will not feel so positive about it.

Tell you what if PS4 has Mouse keyboard support I may buy one. Not saying I would quit PC gaming, but I would like a more
portable system to be able to have around. What would be perfect would be if your ranks and unlocks
would carry over onto other gaming platforms. That would be a win win for everyone except EA:)

It does. And MS hinted they may push to have Mouse/keyboard support mandatory for all games. Which is smart and likely to carry over to PS4 as well.

After so many years of 'losing ground' to console hardware (affecting quality of games and the overall experience) it is nice to hear such things.

Yeah I'm thinking about it, but I have Vacation and buying
a new truck soon so it'll probably be like Christmas or something.
I want to hear feedback on it first any way. Thanks though !

Naw that's what I'm saying... A few months ago I couldn't play on a server with out a hacker, but now it's not so bad. I just hope it's because they are fixing it and not that the hackers are bored and they are waiting on BF4. That's all you know? :toast:

If you had a bad time/experience playing nothing I can say changes that of course but, as I told Nate, I think the prevalence of hacking is really overblown. Meaning there isn't as much going on as many seem to think. Maybe you've just been a bit unlucky too though in terms of encountering them. There's always times I'm like "hmmm that seems fishy or is not right" but there are other possible explanations too besides outright cheating with some purchased hack pack so...

I've bene lagging too recently due to ISP and that causes all sorts of wierdness to happen.

Yea, I've played long enough to know what's hacking and what's lag in a game. These guys where taking multiple clips emptied into them and nothing happen.. One guy was even bragging.. :banghead: His score was 144 kills with 14 deaths.. and he would just unload with the lmg and kill everybody with all head shots... :banghead: He even had players on his team telling him to leave, because he was killing everyone..

I have seen a few players that were outright hacking. But most of the time in BF3 and BC2 it was the net-code. Sometimes it takes a split second to die but you swore that you got him first from the slight latency. Router overhead/ISP/BF3 servers a lot going on.

If you are thinking of getting a PS4,
Amazon is currently offering a BF4 Launch day bundle with the console and a controller, a copy of BF4, and a years subscription to their PS plus online service for $500.

Thanks for the info. Makes it worthwhile compared to the standard XBONE.

Wow, spectator mode is back...I may actually buy this game now. Not having any real tools besides an educated guess to catch cheaters was unbelievably frustrating in the last few games, and a real hindrance to any sort of competitive play.

Yeah Punkbuster seems to just get in the way of normal people playing I guess. I was banned from BC2 for 2 weeks (I think), I never hacked/cheated but I did play on some shady servers for a few days and I remember talking to people about it. Friend here and other said I wasn't the only one banned for no reason. Even though my appeal did not reinstate my account 2 weeks later I could just log in and play again. Apparently Even Balance/Punkbuster was to blame.

PB got hacked at one point and the people behind it were using it to ban normal people from the game.

It happend once in 2008 and once in 2012

Yea I was kinda upset since Battlefield is the only FPS I enjoy for years and everyone of my friend plays as well. But looking forward to BF4 I think DICE is doing a lot of things right. It shouldn't be much harder to run than BF3 and many things are heading in the right direction. Didn't think this was possible in the realm of EA.

as much as i love BF3, I found BF2 immensely more fun. I think the community was generally a lot better back then too.

These days BF3 are full of CoD rejects with no idea about playing as a team and assholes that drive off in vehicles as soon as they get into it even though they have space for another 4 or more people. break cover into an open field, get shelled by enemy tank & abandon vehicle before getting raped by a chopper thats supporting the enemy tank /respawn

^ Pretty much the cream of the fukin' crop right there unless people be hackin and bottin on your team - those people carry your team thats full of snipers to victory.

Obviously when TPU play together its a different story

Join some squads and friend people that play around the time you play. It makes a huge difference. Even if you are the only squad doing anything you can change the outcome of the game and it makes huge difference in whether you enjoy it or not. If you can't find anyone jump on TDM or Conquest Domination and ramp up your unlocks and rank. There are ways to help alleviate the frustration of idiots who don't know what team play is about.
