Braided vs smooth mouse cable

we are an underrepresented minority!

For me this is really about keeping things running more than smooth vs braided; it's just that replacement cables seem to be braided.

I did cut the cord and resolder the connector and this worked, but it was a bit messy; I am looking for a cleaner solution for next time.

But this brought another thought to mind; we pick copper cables because they are of low resistance, but I wonder if a different metal would last longer under flexing than copper.

srly, if braided cables "drag" too much, maybe you should consider a gym membership.

i don't get it, assuming nothing (since nothing was stated) a heavy MMO mouse isn't going to matter braided/smooth. again if drag is a problem, then so is muscle development . . just saying.

AH, yes it IS "cheaper" and is nice overall, but it is NOT rechargeable, which was the deal breaker for me.....And before you say "but that requires a wire to do", please note that all 5 my MX's last 30 days or so per charge, even with 10-12 hours of heavy use each day, so having to whip out the charging cable here & there is not a big deal IMO

Personally I don't care. I buy the mouse for the qualities of the mouse, not the cable. A good quality mouse will have a good quality cable.

to be fair to @Shrek its a replacement cable(?).
but idk, its like keeping up w/the jones.
i've had braided cable start to fray. so i reran the cable. . ya know.

I am considering going wireless for my kb/m. The built in Bluetooth on my board is very quick.. been playing Forza with an Xbox controller and it is smoooth.

But I am not a hardcore fps gamer like I was a decade ago, so that may help. I also game at 60fps so definitely not that hardcore.

Braided seems to be higher quality, but also aesthetic, as in trendy.
On the other hand, if prices allow, I'll probably go wireless since they've improved immensely over the years.

The battery in it lasts for ages. I've heard 2 years. It takes a AA battery.

I have fixed a game pad cable by shortening it, but that was soldered directly to the board and did not use a connector; it was a little tricky as the strain relief needed to be drilled out so it could be reused.

My first & only wireless mouse was the legendary Logitech G7. Gaming with it was smooth, but I got pretty fast sick of battery changes.
To me everything that isn't "mobile" has to have a cable. Period. Babysitting the battery level of my phone is already enough for me.

Haven't seen a smooth cable in ages, most are braided. Braided or smooth, there is not much difference. They are both mostly pretty stiff.
I routed my braided cable under the desk, through the channel of a HumanScale monitor arm, it's dangling pretty freely from behind my monitor. Doesn't distract my mouse moovement at all, on my XXL mousepad. But it also comes down what type of gamer you are. I'm more a high/mid sense gamer (180 without lifting), a low sense gamer might benefit from a wireless mouse.

@OP, there is another cable option: custom Paracord Mouse Cables:

Just discovered it some days ago while looking for mouse replacement switches. Looks very interesting. Challenge is to find one that fits your mouse. The question would be how durable it is & if the lack of shielding has some side effects. But as mainstream companies like "Glorious" is already selling it, it can't be that bad. Some more info:

I can guarantee that I could do with more cardio, but it’s not the weight or drag, it’s the tiny vibrations sent through the cord for me, it’s like my AKG in ear headphones, absolutely love them….except the braid noise if you love your head.

I also find the ferrite core on some cables a bit too heavy; one I ordered has a smaller core.

That's a tough call. I would say... The switch bc over the times of you'd move the string over time it'd overlap or something

If one were to click say once every 5 seconds for an 8-hour day for 5 days a week that adds up to 1.5 million clicks a year; I have stocked up on switches good for 80 million clicks. Since the left switch is used so much more often than the others, I tend to only replace that one.

I guess the mouse feet are also a possible point of failure.

I will say just use a cable crane, tether, bungie for the edge of a desk as a good solution.

Well, he got a point. Braided headphone cables create micro vibrations when rubbing on your clothes, sending "scratching noises" right into your ears.
Basically turning your headphones into string phones. Especially when you're on the walk or on a bicycle. That's where smooth cables are way better.

Shouldnt be biking with headphones/buds in anyway, nor driving due to not having ears to protect you.
