Do you guys think I would have a problem with an RX 6700 XT or an RTX 3070? My power supply is a Sentey GSP 650W 80+ Gold, and it has been my companion for almost 10 years without ever giving me any issues. Ive used cards like the GTX 780, 970, 1070, and currently the RX 6600 XT. It has the pigtail cable (8+ 6+2), and Ive read that its not recommended to use it, which is what worries me, even though I havent had any problems so far

Thanks!

Looks to be a good power supply by reviews. But Im not familiar with the particular brand. 650 will be fine but at 10 years old id say you've gotten your money out of it and it would be best to replace it.

Get something like a Seasonic Focus GX 650W

:( You told us nothing about the computer such as CPU, RAM, drives, etc. Are you currently using this PSU? With What? Please fill out your TPU System Specs so we know what we are dealing with now.

I personally know nothing about Sentey power supplies. That said, the fact it has served you well for 10 years clearly indicates you got a good one. HOWEVER, as FreedomEclipse points out, 10 years is a good run. I would gracefully retire it, save it for testing drives and fans, and use it for a temporary spare.

Then decide on the graphics card and future components, then buy a new PSU to support them.

The current supply should handle the extra load of either of those cards - if the connections support the cards. But frankly, I would wait until the budget support a new PSU with the purchase of the new card.

If you game on a high refresh rate monitor and you run with V-sync on. You'll be able to run both cards just fine. Just be aware that your power supply is nearing the point where it should probably be replaced given its age.

wisest choice would be to keep saving money till you can afford both.

It's a super flower Legion HX. It should last 10+ years so if it was me and I hardly pushed it, looks like you didn't with your previous GPUs, I would use it but know that I would be looking out for price drops for a replacement down the line.

Given the relatively high current output available on the 3.3V rail (which is less common these days) does anyone know if this PSU is "Group Regulated"? If this is a badged Super Flower unit I'm probably wrong, but it might be worth investigating.

Most of the loading on a PSU these days is on the +12V rail (CPU and GPU). If you place a heavy load on the 12V rail and a light load on the 5V rail, problems can arise (see below):

https://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/power-supplies-101,4193-12.html

Group Regulation

In this regulation type, +12V and 5V are generated together, and both of them feed their output voltage error to the regulator controller. This means that if the load is unbalanced between the rails, then the regulator controller will have a very hard time retaining a proper regulation. For example, if the load at +12V is high and the load at 5V is low, the voltage on the second rail will be raised, because the regulator controller tries to raise the +12V rail's voltage. But because the latter is tied to 5V, both of them are raised. This is why most group-regulated PSUs fail to keep their rails within +/-5 percent tolerance during cross-load tests.

I bought an old second-hand home-built Xeon server PC and after 6 months, the PSU exploded. The system was at least 10 years old and had been kept in a damp garage for several years. An electrolytic on the low voltage side showed signs of leakage. A new PSU restore normal operation.

Never heard of that PSU but at least the rest of your PC isn't too power hungry. I have no problems running a 6700 XT with a Fractal ION Gold 550W, and the setup is more power consumpting (i7-6700K OC etc.) than yours.

Lian-Li's new "EDGE" series are nice for the price. 850W is 129.99 USD at NEWEGG. I like this one. Nice cables.

is that good? :D
more modern platform & definitely better than group regulated. The PSU itself is good, reliable, and safe but it won't compare to some of super flowers better units.

Thanks for the reference, but the my concern isnt really the power supply, its the pigtail cable. Its the only one I have, i think it originally came with two 6+2 cables, but as i mentioned, i bought it about like 10 years ago, so I probably misplaced the other one

It has a single +12v rail so shouldn't be an issue for the actual PSU, did you get that cable with the PSU?

in that case I would be fine using this and the PSU does seem to be a decent unit albeit getting long in the tooth now, shouldn't be any issues, assuming your whole system would pull 400-450W absolute max with the 6700xt, deffo one to put on your Christmas list though a new PSU at some point

its the pigtail cable. Its the only one I have
not sure what you mean by "pigtail" as I'm thinking wire nut but the unit should come with two PCIe 6+2 cables (you misplaced one) some RTX 3070 may use the 12pin connector (can't recall but they will come with the adapter for 8-pin) while most should just be 8-pin. The RX 6700XT should all be 8 pin if I recall so you should be fine but do a quick check prior to purchase.

He literally explains it in the OP, it's dual 8pin (1x 8 + 1x6+2) which if it was for this PSU as he confirmed it should be fine to supply the need wattage/voltage without issue, besides the 6700xt only pulling 250, and the PSU is a single rail model so no issues having to use seperate cables for different rails, it's a non issue IMO, though at 10 yrs old I would look at getting a new one soon, though it is not a $40 paperweight so should be ok with his total system power being quite lower than the PSU is rated for

Dont worry, guys! As I said, Im going to wait to get a new psu and probably a bigger gpu upgrade. This one has already served me well enough. I really appreciate all your help guys!

dual 8pin (1x 8 + 1x6+2)
it's a cable split than but Sentey states the unit came with 6+2 only and he says "(8+ 6+2)" so that could mean just a single 8 pin via 6+2

PSU is a single rail model
all PSU under 1000w are single 12v rails and many above as well
some units had rail splits with older ATX specs (still single 12v rail due to cost) back in the group regulated days.

6700 XT is totally fine with a pigtail cable. I wouldn't put my 3080 with one, but a mid-tier card like 6700 XT is totally fine.

Thanks!
Your PC with 6700XT will peak power around 430-450W during gaming. Avg power will be lower.
R5 3600: 70-80W peak for gaming
RX 6700XT: 220-250W peak for gaming
Rest of system: 80~100W peak
A 650W PSU should handle it pretty easy.

But...
RX 6000 are known for harsh transients and some times PSUs can't handle them even with plenty power budget.
Its like RX6000series can bring PSU weak points to surface

It can be a gamble.
Not damaging anything necessarily but facing restarts, hangs and so during gaming.
This can be annoying and/or frustrating especially if you cant replace the PSU ASAP and need to wait a few months.

You make a good point, but my sim racing PC with a 5800x and a 6700 XT has not run into any power-related issues even though I run an EVGA 600 BA power supply. I think that as long as you don't have a crummy PSU, you'll be fine. Besides, I know someone with a 7700x and 7800 XT PC who has a Super Flower 650 W PSU; he doesn't have any issues either.
