I game with a triple panel 1080P 60Hz screens and I've some lovely RTX 3070s/3080s and a 3090 and I think I need some new monitors as ever since my Dell 3008's went south over 10 years ago, heck probably more than..., I've stuck with the 1080P screens.

I was looking at a 4k 144Hz panel simply because of the res and I love the desktop sizes, but when talking to a few mates and such, they are using 1440P panels with a higher refresh rate. So I'm a little torn in a way bigger res or to not go bigger res...

So seeing the price difference between the two panels I've been looking at currently (links to follow) I'm curious what anyone else might suggest. Also with the fact that I'm considering to replace my 1080P panels for my gaming rig to these newer screens, which would be 3 at the moment, I'd also consider upgrading the 1080P panels that the girls rigs have as well later on down the line. I'd also consider a replacement for my little micro Dell Optiplex 3080 machine since trying to do all the WCG FAH and Rosetta stuff on a single 1080P drives me insane.. I borrowed a mates 4k panel (sadly 60Hz and a 42" monster) which was lovely but I sadly never really got much chance to game on it (broken leg issue!!) and I think it was just physically too damn big lol

I think its time for a change for my eyes and my GPUs, so I await some feedback!!

Might consider an ultra-wide. I was a bit leery of them when I got mine, but I used a standard 1440p for years and the biggest issue was the squareness of the display. I say issue, regular 1440p was not a convenient layout for work (nor was 1080P) - when I needed to have two sets of code / two browsers / two RDP sessions / two documents next to each other. For example, debugging code and looking at SQL Server at the same time, or debugging a web based app I can have the code and the browser up at the same time without overlapping.

I tried to do 4K for a bit but 4K has drawbacks using it for work. Text and icons are too small by default, and having to fiddle with fonts twice a day and inside very app is not cool. Unless you are ok with tiny text, you wind up having to manage fonts.

On the gaming front, the UW monitor is great for games in the genre of Shadows of Mordor, Dragon Age, Assassin's Creed and so on. The wide and curved display is very immersive. Older games that don't support UW can be annoying though as they will usually display in the center of the screen at a standard 1440P. I got used to that after a few months though and no longer notice it.

But for me, I'll never go back to the square displays that are more common. The ability to work on 2+ windows in nearly a full screen mode right next to each instead of overlapping or manually juggling the windows like on my old 1440P is just too useful. Multiple monitors (I also have) sounds nice but it's distracting to have to change focus back and forth, I just use the 2nd monitor if I need to 'monitor' something periodically, not for what I'm actively working on.

From someone who has tried both, the visual upgrade is not worth the required grunt from 1440p to 2160p. Not to mention even on the new RTX 4090 its still not a guarantee to hit 2160p 120hz consistently. I love 1440p because with minor visual adjustments you get nice quality, while being able to hit 120hz and beyond (I have the Samsung Odyssey G7 which is 1440p 240hz and love it!).

That's because you also need OLED and HDR, along with 4K and HFR.

I agree, 1440p/240Hz is the sweet spot at the moment, but with 5090/5080ti I will probably also upgrade my monitor to whatever is currently best.

27" 1440p is the sweet spot. has been since 2012 and will be until 2030. unless you want to buy an rtx 4090 and go 4k anyway.

If financials are of a concern. Definitely QHD 120+ Hz.
1. Considerably cheaper than 4K.
2. Requires less powerful (and less expensive) GPU to achieve rated refresh rate.
3. Feels like an amazing upgrade over 1080p/60 Hz.

The only downside with that idea is the having to have 3 of them and them not fitting on the desk...... I'll ignore the power usage as well for the moment!!

Your question caused me to register for the forum because I have the same exact situation. Going from 3x 1080p monitors, to something else.

Another option that wasn't mentioned, was to get a very high quality 1080p monitor for the center with a high refresh rate and keep using triple monitors. What I don't know, if its possible to use multiple monitors (say a 280Hz in the middle flanked by 60Hz on the sides) and not have the center monitor locked to the refresh of the slower ones?

Does anyone know? Because 90% of what you see is on the center monitor, the side monitors are just peripheral information and dont even need to be high quality.

Multi monitor is more versatile too. YOu can use just the center monitor for competitive shooters locked at 280fps, and then use the side monitors when playing sims. Also can be shared with other computers.

I agree, I have not been on a top tier 4K panel yet but I have used some pretty decent ones before. I still say that the games though are getting crazy with the amount of details still look fantastic on a good 1440p panel, but it also depends on the size (I stick to about 27inch) as the bigger you go the more those extra pixels make the difference.

Well I hope I did right!! I'll find out maybe when I get to have a game on something.... Be a first with the 3090... Only had it 2 years (or however long its been out lol I can't remember.....)

It depends on budget and games that you play. If you play first person shooters and can afford something like a RTX 3080 12GB then 1440P G-Sync compatible. Otherwise 1080P.

1440p 144Hz with Freesync - 4k gaming just isn't quite there yet IMO. Yes, the 3090 and 4090 can run many current titles at acceptable frame rates @ 4k, but as newer games come out that won't be the case without dropping the settings down or falling back on some DLSS/FSR/RSR/XeSS voodoo.
The drawback of 1440p would be Netflix playback, assuming you watch Netflix on your PC - 1440p falls between their HD and 4k plan, and you'll need the 4k plan to get good video quality at 1440p.
