You wouldn't think it would happen to you until it does... I was reading about 12VHPWR volts on HWINFO and people were saying that you should worry if it's around 11.5 or below at full 600W Load... WHICH my card was using this EZDIY Fab connector... and at idle it was at 11.913.... So I checked my connections and the cable was VERY hard to remove, once I got it out I found the below.. the PSU cables and connector on the card itself is fine but this connector almost got fried.

Anyway moving on, I decided to then plug in the corsair 12v6x2 cable my PSU came with.. now its idling at 12.045 and Load 11.802-11.731 original was 11.9/11.5 MASSIVE Difference!

Becareful out there everyone aesthetics just isn't something to play with on this card unfortunately.

Its a good warning and lesson. You are braver than I. I told myself when the 4xxx series launched I will never use the pretty or 3rd party cables.

I am using this 12VHPWR cable from Seasonic on my Prime 1000w power supply. It might not be pretty but it is cheap and made by the manufacturer of the power supply, I am betting that Seasonic know what they are doing. :)

If it is up to me I would advise people to stay away from third party adaptors, they might look pretty and neat for tidy cable management but it is not worth the risk.

It doesn't really matter whether it's an official cable or not, the Nvidia reddit has reports of both equally burning up with the 5090.

It's all fun and games until Nvidia denies your $2,500 card's warranty for user error or it happens just outside of warranty.

The connector is just trash.

it's not about cable. It's about that garbage is 400W standard, not 600.
Only way to run 5090 is power limit to 400W TDP

Further more.. my card is now able to pass timespy at 3100mhz+ core clocks... it wasnt able to do 113+ on afterburner before now it does 220+

AND the coil whine is almost completely gone with the ezdiyfab cable the coil whine was super loud!

So now the big questions...
  1. Did you attempt to clean the GPU part of the connector afterwards before using the new cable? (with some kind of contact cleaner)
  2. If not cleaned aren't you still concerned that even with a new cable attached you might have unbalanced load between the pins because of debris or impurities on the surfaces of the GPU power pins that may increase contact resistance?

I had the same issue with stock cables and the 4090 dongle - same issue except at the dongle and not at the card -- cable melted and melted a PSU power port. There doesn't seem to be any reliable way of fully avoiding the issues - I don't buy the whole "it's third party cables" bs. Derbauer recreated it as well and anything that pulls under 450W doesn't seem to have any issues at all.

Yeah dont I doubt it either ive already got a undervolt profile which pulls below 450w that ill be sticking to for 24/7 use even then still concerned.

Is this after you installed the water block?
I was just wondering if running cooler allowed it to draw more power?

With the way its behaving.. and me seeing new heights in 3dmark this is totally new behaviour from since day 1.

There were bits of white plastic on the walls of the most burnt connector but the pins and housing were visibly fine. My biggest telling sign is the massive improvment in 12pin voltages and general stability. But will be undervolting the card for the rest of its life for 24/7 use moving forward and will wait for a card thst doesnt use 12vhpwr in future lol

with FLIR. I would watch livestream of it
I bet youre the type to laugh at your own friends misfortunes

Does Nvidia provide their own 12v6x2 cable with the 5090?

On my 5080 I needed 90 degrees cable as well, thankfully I have be quiet PSU and they sell that cable for their PSUs:

Not very pretty but so far no problems and I saw that 5080 can also burn.

Glad that your GPU still works!

I know that every cable can burn basically but well in case of warranty they cannot claim that I used wrong cable

Yeah cant find a corsair one but will stick to the og psu cable for now since its droop is only around 300 whereas the third party one was 600 mv droop lol
