Is this still a "thing" that should be done? If yes, is Prime95 still the preferred method?

Is it now more less personal preference?

PS: I don't feel like going through the process. Excited for my upcoming stuff.

I've done it with every new CPU I owned up to the 5900x. I didn't bother with the 7700.

If you mean as a stress test to make sure nothing is unstable, sure. If you mean that the CPU only performs optimally after stress testing, then no, it hasn't been a thing in forever, if it even was ever a thing for modern CPUs.

Prime95 doesn't do much on Ryzen for stability, boost clocks always are scaled to the nature of the load applied. Recent generations of Ryzen will either clock significantly lower in P95's core-heavy tests by default (thus making P95 useless), or only be stable at lower clocks in P95 when OC'd compared to other tests/applications (also rendering P95 useless)

Yes, artic silver 5 requires 200 hours of "burn in" time.

Cooler settling and pushout also takes time depending on thermal paste consistency.

I blame both major players in CPU manufacturing, with pretty much locking down overclocking

Burn in when the chip is new is really only to test the chip when it's received for seeing if it's defective, runs hot and so on.
Aside from that there is no actual benefit from just doing it.

You could do some stress testing that will reveal any problems with tweaks for example, that will let you know what it likes and doesn't like in those terms.

Just don't try it like I did one (FX-8350) straight from the package brandnew - Stuffed it in, slapped the pot on top, poured in the Ln2 and volted the shiznit out of it - Did rather well.
I don't believe you're set up for that but if you are, hey - Go for it.

@Bones unless it was a placebo (which could be) I swear Burn-in is what made some of my previous CPUs handle voltage better and stayed more stable during high heat load. This was like socket 1156 days tho

I lost an AMD K6-III that upgraded a Pentium 4 socket using the amazing PowerLeap adapter. This was the late 1990s. Did I say already that that adapter was amazing?! Bought it in the Funan centre in Singapore.

No thermal management on the AMD K6-III and it got friend. Never an AMD since that very expensive experience.

I remember people saying this in the 462 days, but AMD could already take hella voltage back then. I think I was at ~2.15v for 2700MHz on a 2500M
