It was never necessary, really. When I assemble a brand new system, I run it through the basic test suite (CPU and memory testing, primarily) to make sure that nothing is damaged or faulty, but that's more perfectionism on my part than an actual requirement.

Breaking in the TIM is no longer required in the largest majority of cases, most thermal paste compounds are non-curing nowadays, I believe the only curing one that is still available in large quantities and in circulation is Arctic Silver Céramique 2, which is my go-to when I need a very-long-term application such as a game console (since it's ceramic based).

That one will usually take about a week's worth of heat and cold cycles to reach its maximum performance in my experience.

Really bad thermal paste applications (especially with thick pastes) needed time to soften up and spread around, which is where 'burn in' came from in the past, combined with it being common in other fields (like speakers and headphones, which are physically moving parts and do indeed loosen up with the initial usage)

Yeah I do remember thermal paste getting better with age or heat year ago. Now it's near instant. Temps are the same either way.
