Death Stranding Benchmark Test & Performance Analysis

I don’t know what anyone else sees, but I am not impressed by DLSS, still. In every frame, including the quality DLSS settings it looks blurry and washed out compared to TAA.

Thanks for the game vs. hardware review @W1zzard!

weird thing to see really
dlss is sharper and more detailed

look at the lines running off the building.and the building itself

it seems like a consensues among just about every review but TPU I read (pcgh, computerbase, purepc) that dlss 2.0 in DS is better than native.none except for w1zzard and you mentioned blur.I don't see it either.

also, are you not impressed by 40-70% perf. increase with dlss Q/P ?

you're misunderstanding. I still very much stand by my "yet visual quality is pretty much identical to native resolution rendering."

What i'm talking about is this kind of ghosting around moving objects, and the halo glow, it's more visible in reality than the screenshot. not a big deal though, and the perf improvement is absolutely worth it

(all these are 100% scale, just cropped to show the interesting part)

DLSS (ghosting around edges):

DLSS (halo around edges):

No AA (terrible aliasing on edges, but MUCH better detail in surfaces):

TAA (this is the "default" that everyone is comparing DLSS to):

see it now.
taa smears too, that's why I saw a no difference between dlss and taa

playing with AA off is a no go though.

Is there any way to force DSR in Death Stranding? I know you can do it by changing the desktop to the desired (or higher) resolution with DSR and that way the game will allow the DSR resolution to be selected, but that results in a blurry jumbled mess of a desktop which I just want to avoid.

I feel only giving this game 1 hour is truly not fair at all. This game is meant to be a pain to play. There are definitely times where it is a first person shooter. I hated it when I first started as well but again I am not a quitter. As you progress the game world is effected by other players as well. Void outs as well! Giant craters form when a player looses a fight with a BT or beached things. I played it on Normal setting and took about a week to finish playing about 6 hrs a day; which is not hard to do. Building roads and connecting cities is not the only context of the game.

That's not really anything you can say. My statement said what I see. It doesn't make me wrong, and what you said doesn't make you right. Sharpness is subjective. I see what I see, and there is no way you can counter it. I never said anything except what I see. You made it about absolutes, which there are none. God forbid anyone have a different viewpoint or opinion...

very weird... same setup at guru3d at 2560x1440 1080ti scores 109 fps while here 85fps...
am i missing something?

I can respect preferences and individual differences in sight, but it seems every objective analysis agrees on the strengths and shortcomings of DLSS. Doesn't stop you preferring any setting because of it's unique way of rendering the final image and your nuances in sight, but that is what it comes down to.

For example. DLSS does resolve more fine detail, however DLSS does produce halos around edges comapred to TAA. Similarly, DLSS Quality mode increases FPS by ~35% or so. You could say well I can't really tell the difference betweeen 75fps and 110fps or the IQ, but objectively and measurably that difference is there.

Seeing and/or appreciating the differences are of course a highly individual thing, but there are facets that are largely agreed upon.

The boost in FPS by switching to DLSS is noticeable but I can see still the blurriness. You probably can't avoid it anyway if you want to speed things up. I think you can't say that DLSS gives more details. That's kinda absurd.
Although in some scenarios, the DLSS looks a bit sharper than TAA. Either way it looks good. The DLSS Quality is very much OK in this game.

you can use Freestyle sharpen filter on top of DLSS if you think it's still blurry.
Nvidia was saying they use 16k image for AI training so it's no surprise that DLSS can sometimes give more details than native res.

of course you can if you either look at the screenshots or understand how it works
or see the video I posted

does it make sense that a 16k image displayed on a 960p screen has more detail than a 1440p image on a 1440p screen ?

That's for DLSS 1st gen, DLSS 2nd gen works completely differently

How does the DLSS 2nd gen work? Don't get me wrong but the irregularities in the image quality of some areas in the picture are there. TAA looks better than DLSS on one picture but sometimes it's all the way around. Wonder what's the reason behind it.

Some info here: https://www.nvidia.com/en-us/geforce/news/nvidia-dlss-2-0-a-big-leap-in-ai-rendering/
Basically DLSS 2.0 is TAA, with AI to improve the TAA algorithm, not to paint in missing details

TAA info: https://developer.unigine.com/en/docs/2.6.1/principles/render/temporal_aa/
Do read the section on Ghosting

More good info on TAA: https://aws.amazon.com/blogs/gametech/anti-ghosting-with-temporal-anti-aliasing/

Lots of more info on Google

Edit: I found where they claim "16K" images. From what I understand, these aren't used to provide more surface (texture) detail, but to provide more resolution near the edges, so that the algorithm can better learn what edges are (that it has to AA), and how to process them

Yeah, very well done Review.
I'm not a gamer, although maybe now I've seen some of the games out there now, it's a good addition/substance abuse issue to add to the list....like running after sheep nekked at midnight on the Yorkshire Moors was exciting the first few times, but maybe is time for a new hobby??

I think this is the sort of thing that could be done to a lot of the high end packages: not just games, but technical software too. Like Matlab, Ansys, Abaqus, Thermocalc etc.

Feel free to correct me, but I think there's a gap between a User who has a very high end system, where money was not a major consideration, and they have no major issues running resource intensive games and/or technical software (including image processing).

And between someone with a lower end laptop who in theory meets the minimum requirements for these packages, but will not really have a happy time running them. "Like watching paint dry".....

So yeah, the Rich Nerd has no problems.
The second guy, well, he's also got no problems, at least SOLVABLE ones, because he's SCREWED.
He's trying to do a record lap on the the Nurburgring Race Track in a Trabant. Sure, it CAN and HAS been done, but it was REALLY slow.
So unless he lights his system on fire and collects on the insurance, he has no (solvable) issues. Happy man....

So my point is, the MISSING Gap, is where you are able to spend something in between, but you need to be clever how you do it. And to be convinced it WILL indeed help you.

And I think that if there were more benchmarks using systems that are in between these extremes, and maybe done with adding a bit more GPU, an then a bit more CPU, a bit more SSD etc. Based on that, you'd have a good idea of where you should spend your extra $$$ to get a faster lap time.

Runs easily at 4k on the Titan V, looks amazing. My 55inch monitor is only 60hz so i cant get a handle on the peek performance. It never drops frames and i stream at the same time. Ive been streaming @1440p but ive upped it to 4k seen as it runs so well. Thanks to wiz for the benchmark info! :toast:
