Doom Eternal has been review-bombed over the weekend, as disgruntled players took to Steam to show their thoughts on the the game's Update 1. The issue isn't in the update itself or it changing core gameplay functions; rather, it's based on the inclusion of Denuvo's Anti-cheat mechanism for the multiplayer component of the game, which is also running in the single-player campaign - considered to be the core of any Doom game.

Players are against the inclusion of Denuvo and its monitoring subroutines due to it having a a kernel-level service that monitors gameplay. Gamers are noting performance decreases, framerate drops, crashes, and deleted Saves after the game's latest update. Others are voicing their discontent at the fact that Denuvo has been added post-purchase of the game; players that might not choose to buy the game over that detail have already bought it, and refunds are apparently not being entertained. Doom Eternal's previous 90% user review score on Steam now stand at a measly 50%, which is absolutely undeserving of the game itself. Doom may be Eternal, but its community feedback sure isn't.

Seems well deserved, in this case.

Why they add it after the fact and on Steam. A DRM free copy was “available ” Day 1anyway. I can totally understand being upset about it. It’s far too late and pointless especially being a legit owner already.

I bought the game on release and had a great time with it, it also worked flawlessly until this patch which introduced the unwanted anti-cheat system as well as several bugs and performance issues (I've had minor ones but there are people who had their saves wiped and other sorts of crap).
It should be added that I've been playing the game strictly as single player since that's what I'm interested in but I get this forced upon me anyway.
It seems this will be the last game I buy from Bethesda, I was already wary of them but made an exception for Doom and id software but clearly it was a mistake.

Denuvo and it's monitoring subroutines
should be "its"

Don't you fret none, you Steam loving people!

Steam will do what they're good at - remove all the negative feed back and restore the reviews back to showing how positive players are towards the game!

Yeah for Steam for censoring! Yeah!

It sucks too because by all accounts id software isn't to blame; they're still a damn good developer. They still give half a fuck about their product, but then the higher ups with their heads up their asses bust down the door shouting "DENUVO!" and the rest is history. Dragging down a top notch developer with their bullshit, Zenimax/Bethesda has basically become EA.

Forcing anti-cheat for single player is unnecessary. It was otherwise a great game, had a bunch of fun playing it. Glad I finished it before this happened.

I have not finished it yet..if it does the same for me in the uninstall box it goes..

Yeah for Steam for censoring! Yeah!

Steam does not remove negative feedback unless it violates the ToS. We've all read steam reviews before, people can say pretty much anything they want.

FYI the review bomb system was put in place due to request by steam users and IMO works pretty dang well.

Bethesda is screwing up again? Oh wait, that's not surprising these days. Bethesda, EA, and Activision are all dumpster fires.

It's a cruel circle, we all want to rid the MP of cheating dimwits but you then burn bridges in SP land.

I got DooM 2016 for fairly cheap and played it a bit just for the SP, they then released all the MP-orientated DLC for free....but I got pissed becuase it was a frickin 70GB download of content I would never use.

You won't get an automatic refund if you played for more than two hours and/or owned the game for more than 14 days. Also, if you have been blocked by VAC (Valve's Anti-Cheat), you lose the right to ask for refunds for the game in which you been blocked.

Valve, however, will still allow you to ask for a refund, but they will review your petition manually.

I always consider review bombing to be something that is unrelated to the actual game (like the political views of the developer for instance).

In this case they actually updated the game with malware so these are legitimately negative reviews. Alot of which are from people who actually owned the game before the DRM.

Does this have a multiplayer scene? I mean, it's not quake, does anyone care enough about doom multiplayer to put this crap on it?

Ya, very glad I never payed for this game. Would have bought it at launch on Steam if it had had mgpu support & no bethesda.net account needed, but oh well. They saved me some cash that will go toward my next GPU upgrade. Thanks Bethesda!

I was still in a middle of other game and now getting ready to buy this but now thank you, pass.

There were only a few people playing it, even less now. The fact that it's demons vs slayer probably put off a lot of people who would have liked a pure quake-like death match.
That said apparently some people liked it but I don't see the reason for anticheat when there wasn't even a problem on that side and no competitive potential.

In times like this I cheer on crackers to release a pirated clean version and the community organizing multiplayer. It's sad to get to this point, this was the first game I purchased full price in ages. Now I'm regretting it, not for the money going to ID but to fucking Bethesda.

Game freezes for me. sucks, i cant even get into a playable part of a level now without game locking up completely.

Event viewer : Display driver nvlddmkm stopped responding and has successfully recovered.

Only game that does it. searched and some have said to go back to the last NV driver, did that, same issues. Have tried so many things I have lost track and the game isn't worth rebuilding for so.

I have already beaten the game, would still like the ability to play it more, but the creators have trashed the game.

Yep no doubt about it - I feel sorry for you my gaming brother, hope they resolve it quickly so you can play again. The "other" copy is clean with no disgusting Denuvo and no issues. While some people who bought the legit copy can't even launch the game anymore (per Steam messageboards).

I say Bravo! Review bombing is a generally distasteful practice, but in cases like this it's almost the only way users can voice objections to such lowlife behaviors from devs/publishers.

Dear Bethesda,

You wasted your money on Denuvo's crapware and it has earned you the rage and wrath of the community. There are better and much less invasive ways to do anticheat. For example, require the multiplayer client for the game to poll the server for player stats. If the client returns data that is in conflict with what the server data shows, disconnect and kick the player from a match. If it happens more than a certain number of times, then the server can impose a temp restriction and flag the account for manual review. Anticheat does NOT need to run local to the game installation. Full stop.

Installing what is effectively a "root-kit" is un-fraking-acceptable. It's a violation of user rights and a severe security risk. We, the people, will not tolerate this. Do something different and get it right or you can go frak yourselves.

Sincerely,
Conscientious gamers everywhere.

Unpopular opinion, I find Doom Eternal to be overhyped/overrated & in my 4hrs of gameplay it forces you to be constantly on the move which entails hopping around like a kangaroo, swinging from ledges like Tarzan forcing you to kill demons in different ways to either earn colourful health drops, armor drops or ammo drops & if you stand still for a couple seconds during a fight you're ass is grass... Doesn't make me feel like a Doom Slayer at all, but hey if you really enjoyed this game more power to yah, as for this dodgy Tencent CCP update, Gross. :pimp:

sOoOoOo friggin glad I'm not a gamer :D
