I haven't heard about a any new monitor that support it for a long time.

True "G-sync" monitors aren't as common as Freesync monitors, but the VRR standard has had a unifying effect. Only G-sync and G-sync Ultimate monitors have hardware G-sync modules and therefore are "true" G-sync, but G-sync Compatible aka. Freesync Premium monitors are on the list (and also usually called G-sync) and still enjoy most of the VRR benefits.

But these days G-sync is mostly colloquially understood to just be VRR when using an Nvidia card, which is pretty much every 120Hz+ monitor out there. Even G-sync Compatible monitors come with a regular G-sync sticker these days. And you can enable G-sync Compatible usually without too much issues even on Freesync Premium monitors that don't carry G-sync Compatible certification.

GeForce G-SYNC Monitors: Manufacturers & Specs (nvidia.com)

One thing I have noticed is that there aren't really Freesync Premium monitors that simply don't work with G-sync Compatible (yes, some without certification but should still be okay for most part).........but apparently there are a few TVs coming out with VRR and G-sync Compatible support but not compatible with Freesync.

Question. I have a dedicated Gsync monitor. Would Freesync work on it? Can't recall if Freesync is hardware based.

I'm not sure if their top tier (Freesync Premium Pro) is hardware based, but both of LG's 32" hardware G-sync monitors support either Freesync Premium (32GK650) or Freesync Premium Pro (32GK850), so it should be fine. But the full VRR range from the G-sync module (below 48Hz) might only work on Nvidia.

G-sync still exists, just not in it's original form.
True to Nvidias usual way of doing things, they just accepted the open-standard version of things and call it Gsync when used with their products.

(and charge companies to verify it works with their products, of course)

Probably not - nvidias early monitors rebranded to Gsync ultimate moved certain tech to the displays that truly was an exclusive tech - that's not freesync/VRR compatible to my knowledge.

It may still support them seperately, but it wont be guaranteed

When my old monitor died I got an LG 32GK850G (had a nice deal on it, and I already had a 1060). But with the current GPU prices I was considering jumping to team Red.

So based on what you're saying, if I change to an AMD card, I won't get VRR or LFC?

I can already guess it's based on editing the monitors driver files by using CRU, but even that has no guarantees of working

A quick google says it's not going to work out of the box, and no ones tried testing with modified files and reported back

Hmm, that's difficult to say. The 32GK850G manual does not mention FreeSync at all, it says "A graphic card that supports NVIDIA’s G-SYNC is necessary" though. LG's product page says "G-Sync: Yes (compatible)" which would lead me to believe it was a generic VRR without G-Sync hardware but compatible with G-Sync. Maybe it does support FreeSync but manual only states G-Sync compatibility as I mentioned so I doubt it.

AMD's site lists the 32GK850F as compatible but not the 32GK850G. Maybe @tabascosauz can verify he was correct before you buy an AMD card? I'd be hesitant going forward with a purchase until further feedback.

Interesting, that's my mistake. They do look like rather different panels, which is interesting as LG last suffix letters don't usually indicate an entirely different monitor.

G-sync Compatible is not G-sync, it's Freesync. 850G looks like it has a hardware module for G-sync.

GK850F is just a regular Freesync monitor with a 40Hz lower VRR bound. No wonder.

There is a distinction between v1 and v2 Gsync modules since Nvidia only later introduced support for VESA Adaptive/Freesync Premium/G-SYNC Compatible on their hardware monitors. But while Nvidia seems to promise support even for older monitors there was also reference to "firmware" update needed. I think Nvidia only provided firmware to monitors released after their announcement:

GK850-G looks like it was released just around that time......

G-Sync can't be dead, it was the daddy of Freesync, which ironically is a trademark of AMD.

Yes its a thing, G-Sync compatible has a limited VRR range.
The bottom is like 40Hz and 48Hz for G-Sync compatible.
1Hz is the bottom for the G-sync hardware.

The bottom range for an LG OLED G-Sync compatible TV is 40Hz.

The plot thickens...

From what I could gather so far, it's dependant on the manufacture date, and the manufacturer's "good will".
Dell apparently did the firmware update but stayed quiet about it.
I have the monitor box still, hopefully today I'll get the chance to search for the build date on it or in the back of the monitor, but that still won't give me any assurances. Meanwhile I'll try to find someone with a discrete AMD card to test it.

If the FPS range is 40-165, then what happens when FPS is well above that at say 300? What happens when FPS dips to the low 20s?

Would that limit the freesync range to 144hz upper limit?

I'm 90% sure the HDMI port on the GK850G is utterly useless for these purposes, it's 60Hz only for whatever reason and isn't even hooked up to the native G-sync module, fat chance it'll run VRR (really necessary even at 60Hz?) even if the monitor can.

Reach out to LG? And hope you don't get some customer service bot lol

From the huge OCN thread on GK850G, no mention of LG firmware updates, so this might be a no-go unless they started shipping with newer revisions........

G-sync is still a thing. The Alienware oled monitor is one current example (AW3423DW). But the hardware module adds cost. Alienware just released another version of the same monitor with Freesync instead btw (AW3423DWF).
I am sure there are other examples. But this one is the most recent I can remember reading about.
