The world's largest gathering of video game publishers, developers, gamers, and associated artists, the Electronic Entertainment Expo, or E3, won't be held this year, according to an ArsTechnica report citing sources among members of ESA, the show's organizers. At the time of this writing, ESA made no formal announcement from the ESA about the show's fate - whether it's cancelled, delayed, or transformed into an online event like many other trade-shows this year. Most trade-shows scheduled for 2020 have suffered one of these three due to the COVID-19 outbreak that has recently gained "global pandemic" status by the World Health Organization. COVID-19 is a highly contagious respiratory tract infection that has claimed over 3,000 lives globally. This would be the first time that E3 has been cancelled since its debut edition in 1995.

Update Mar 12th: It's official, E3 2020 has been cancelled. "After careful consultation with our member companies regarding the health and safety of everyone in our industry - our fans, our employees, our exhibitors and our longtime E3 partners - we have made the difficult decision to cancel E3 2020, scheduled for June 9-11 in Los Angeles," says organizer ESA in its statement announcing the cancellation

Because it's not going to stop anytime soon, it's sad but it's true :-(.

Not surprised, things are getting out of hand because people are reckless with this virus, and still believe it's a flu.

Take a look at Italy, hospitals are full, people in beds in the hallways, people needing chemotherapy being refused for the moment. It's that bad of there, and other countries will follow if no drastic measures are taken.

Chemotherapy destroys your immune system. Good luck running it with CoVID19 patients in hospital.

How much time do they expect this to last? Isn't it a bit premature to decide on events 3 months, 3 months from now?

I agree , but im not doctor

Better this way IMO.

The last E3 was more marketing than you can put in a cringe-worthy 2 min teaser trailer or just showing off majority of products that will be unfinished even at the time of release, rather than an expo that's worthy. Times have changed, sadly.

your actualy right pal , cant we wait for 6 months or next year ?? lol

No indication that this was designed, unless you want (mother) nature to be tried for "crimes against humanity" in which case she might just sue us for wrecking the earth itself!
don't you think its possible for this to be human made … ? ( im not saying it is )

They already cancelled July 4th Fireworks in South Haven, MI because the lake is so high. "muH gLobal WurmIng!"

Waiting for Trump to cancel the November elections and declare himself King Trump. lolz

The only people who have to worry about this virus are immunocompromised or weak immune system such as old people, babies, cancer patients, etc. You might as well start cancelling all events because the virus is not going anywhere and will be everywhere.

Nope there's reports out there suggesting nCoV causes Cytokine storm, so healthy people are at risk just as much though obviously lower than the old(er) folks.

Good for them, just make a stream with trailers and that's it.

Out of caution I think most of these large conferences should be canceled. While I do not believe this virus will be a major problem in the US it makes sense to approach the problem with wisdom.

Please restrict your "recommendations" to something that you actually know something about, or which have a low risk if followed.

Basically nothing you said is correct, and I don't even want to go into discussion - this post should be plainly removed, because of incorrect and potentially dangerous suggestions.

LOL , what was dangerous that he said? Lol....maybe water poisoning?

There will be other cancellations, thats for sure.
P.S.
What's with the conspiracy theory tinfoil crap going on in the comments?

After careful consultation with our member companies regarding the health and safety of everyone in our industry – our fans, our employees, our exhibitors, and our longtime E3 partners – we have made the difficult decision to cancel E3 2020, scheduled for June 9-11 in Los Angeles.

Following increased and overwhelming concerns about the COVID-19 virus, we felt this was the best way to proceed during such an unprecedented global situation. We are very disappointed that we are unable to hold this event for our fans and supporters. But we know it’s the right decision based on the information we have today.

Our team will be reaching out directly to exhibitors and attendees with information about providing full refunds.

We are also exploring options with our members to coordinate an online experience to showcase industry announcements and news in June 2020. Updates will be shared on E3Expo.com.

We thank everyone who shared their views on reimagining E3 this year. We look forward to bringing you E3 2021 as a reimagined event that brings fans, media, and the industry together in a showcase that celebrates the global video game industry.

Considering that E3 has been going downhill in favor of more personalized and interactive events from the likes of Sony and others and a lack of any real brand excitement at E3 booths beyond cardboard displays and printed posters, this is as good a time as any to basically shift E3 to just becoming a large, digital video + web page ad for all things that E3 would normally cover. An all-in-one stop site that is faster to navigate than going from booth to booth.
  • Make use of paid-access streaming to cover all closed door events while leaving public streaming available for everything else.
  • Put ads for everything coming out into their own appropriate pages; stuff for and from Sony, stuff for and from MS/Xbox, stuff for and from Nintendo, etc.
  • If they still want to make some cash, sell E3-exclusives on an E3 online store, splitting profits between E3's maintainers and the companies involved. They could even market more than what is usually stocked by various representatives at the booths, and keep selling up until the store closes down a week later and reopens at the next E3 web event.

Whatever thing is true about that virus, it's not a matter who or if, but only when. I think discussing that point is useless
1, 2 or 6 months before hitting global population (I mean more than 1 billion) ?

Stop freaking out, start learning basic stuff about hygiene (like washing hands, and not only use hydro-alcoholic solutions), and next part is up to scientists !
They won't find a cure fast enough because it's a virus but they will, at some point, find a vaccine they will need to adapt at each mutation.

Stop cancelling all stuff because of the fear created for basically a disease... It's a freaking flu !!! A fast one, but still a flu.
The only positive aspect is pollution reduction >.>

This is not a general discussion about Covid-19 it is a news piece about E3 being closed down because of it, if you would like to participate in a more general discussion there are a couple of appropriate threads, BUT, leave the politics and any other speculative nonsense in your back yard please, cleanup to follow...……. thank you all.

If we're not supposed to talk about it I don't think this thread with this title should even exist honestly.

You would be surprised how many people have conditions that compromise their immune systems or heart and lungs. Some heart problems even compromise immune systems. We’re talking about people in 30’s to 50’s.

Then think about how many of them have healthy partners or spouses who come into contact with many people per day. It’s not just a few people with pre-existing or chronic conditions that are at risk. Many are at risk even if they don’t interact with anyone.

Cancelling large events is prudent because of that. But I hesitate to agree with cancelling 3 months out. Who knows what it will be like in 2 months. If it dies out then the event was cancelled prematurely.

Several people I know came back from CES this year and fell ill within like 7 days. One overall healthy guy mid (50's) who was runner up till that point, was hospitalized with pneumonia and sepsis, it was touch and go...
He thinks it was COVID-19 but no one in the States was testing (still hardly are) at that point, but considering all the people he shook hand from that region it could have been. Surprised the number weren't worse earlier.

When flu outbreaks get bad they just tell people hospital not accepting flu patients, this happened a couple years ago I remember. So why not just do same here. Not much a hospital can do... drink plenty of water, eat some oranges and protein, and rest. That is about all anyone can do. There is no cure yet.

Fear, panic, oh, the human nature is wonderful...
