It might've sound raw, but it's not far from the truth. Game launchers do mine our data, even standalone games do that. EULA is a bitch to read. It's funny, because we - the consumers appear to be the only ones that doesn't know its true value (data), everyone else does and they're doing their best to get their hands on it.
The point referred to was that the CCP was installing malware through EGS which is false.

Most major net entities are mining us for data. It's to be expected anytime we go on the net. EGS is no better or worse in that respect but it's not the CCP spying on Western people through EGS. They have much better ways than through a game launcher.

OK, now I figured, it was part of that "China bad, China spy on us, China threaten our security" boogie man/witches hunt, nevermind...

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again:

Get rid of EGS and Galaxy (and Amazon Games App too).

Tell your wife tonight that you were the hero the community needed. To be reminded that in Darkness, there is always Light to bring back the balance.

She will reward you if you say this exactly, I have spoken.

Let it be known.

Thanks for your explanation, but there's no need for a such drama really. Can we discuss these stuff without becoming all emotional about it? The only way to keep your privacy 100% secure is to stay offline. We all know that. And you just prove my point, you can depreciate your personal data as much as you like, it's still worth a lot to someone out there. :) But some of us just feel uncomfortable sharing something like that with a total strangers.

But yeah too many developers sadly dont give a crap now days how bloated/heavy their stuff is, even steam has gone downhill, way too reliant on bloated chromium framework on its new client.
While I do like the new ui, I do miss the old vgui one.

The entire industry went to hell. And I blame it on "web dev" fanbois. Every graduate and their mother know html/css and two dozen js frameworks, and every "learn to code" programme/course is just piping of the official tutorial of some abstraction of an abstraction, but no one can even begin to understand how whatever crap they use manages its memory. The end result is that practically every application out there is an overglorified web page that consumes more memory in its pitiful attempt at playing "native" than would an entire web server made to publish it! -_- </hyperbole></rant>

I get that writing UI from scratch is painful, but I do hope that this cef/electron mess dies. Use qt or something, ffs!

I can't remember when was the last time I've used Epic Games launcher, therefore I can't remember how it used to be.
I want to try the new UE 5.4.1, so I've installed it on an SSD and started the DL/installation. This is how it looks like, launcher minimized to tray, no other apps running:

View attachment 346579View attachment 346578View attachment 346577

This is insane, core 1 at 100% utilization. When I terminate the DL/install, the CPU load is almost nonexistent.

I'm aware that this is not just about DL but also includes the actual ongoing installation, but I never noticed similar behaviour with Steam. I've downloaded and installed many games through Steam, while playing other games at the same time with no performance loss whatsoever.

What makes the Epic launcher different from Steam client in this regard? Some kind of heavy files compression/decompression algorithm ongoing?
Anyone with decent knowledge willing to explain this to me? It would be highly appreciated.
Installing unreal engine is akin to installing a complete game dev environment and that will always be slow, and huge.

WinRAR & 7Zip decompresses on a single core, too, afaik.
Uh, not for like, decades.

Which is why if you don't like this, read each title's entry on PCGamingWiki to learn whether or not it can be run DRM-free when launched directly from the game executable.

That reduces the amount of user data that's being mined. In 2024 it's almost impossible to own a library of modern titles that don't send some sort of telemetry. If you don't like it, fire up your Super NES Classic and go nuts.

Yep, the remake of Warcraft 3 a game apparently uses web code for its main menu. o_O What drawn attention to it? of course the resource usage.

Pretty sure Steam uses way more CPU resources when installing a game.

I think its always a trade off and part of the overall social contract. We can still choose to what extent we take part. We can go off grid. We can do it partly or temporarily. Most of what we feel is personal in that sense: do the pros outweigh the cons, and how much am I willing to accept to get what I want.

Im pretty selective about where I choose to take part and where I stay away. Its not always easy, but possible, it just takes a sacrifice in one way or another. You usually cant have your cake and eat it too. Sometimes you can, especially in the case of most things data. Make fake or dud accounts; make a copy; etc.
