EVGA RTX 3090 Ti KINGPIN to Require Dual 12-pin Connectors, 975W Capability

Remember when Nvidia said they were going to make video cards with less power. There goal was to make them use less power but have more power output in graphics. Funny how that is not the case now. Also I see now SLI is totally dead as motherboards are not comming with two PCI-E slots. It's sad too. I make make none SLI supported games run SLI no problem. You do it in the driver not the game itself.
I've never been a fan of multi-GPU setups, so I'm not sad to see them go, but I agree with the part about less power. It's disappointing to see nearly zero efficiency gains since Pascal. I guess nvidia thinks people have kW+ power supplies laying around from their old SLi setups, so they can't be asked to spend on efficiency-related R&D. As for me, I thought my 550 W Seasonic Prime Ultra Platinum would be OK for any single GPU setup until the end of times. Shame that I was wrong.

Talk about a premium price and a premium power draw for what might not be much of an improvement.
 
Considering Kingpin models usually run under LN2 then cooling even 975W should not be a problem. And if someone is running theirs on air with over 600W power draw they're obviously not the target for that card. If you have the funds to buy this card then it is assumed you also have the funds to use it under LN2 for record breaking or at the very least custom loop with fullcover waterblock for 24/7 use.

That being said im worried about where we are headed in terms of power draw. Before there were years where 250W was the limit for high end cards. Now it seems every new card consumes more and more power. The new 12pin connector only makes this worse. It seems in order to keep the performance crown Nvidia seems to have thrown efficiency out the window.

They better be careful that 40 series does not reapeat the mess that was GTX 480 also known as Thermi or Jensen's Grill.
 
Kingpin models aren't selling to anyone with a weak PSU, I can promise you that.
I mean yeh, the guy buying this had a decent PSU but 900+ watts on just the GPU, to me equals a new PSU Even for him/her probably.

Could possibly make a good water boiler though shit that should heat a house never mind a room.
 
They are crossing the line, we are getting to the point that you will need a dedicated air conditioning duct directly to the case to cool down the 15k but the burner is ridiculous.
I have a 3090 that I have to mount vertically to manage the surrounding area because of the heat the card release; it looks nice but is not the point.
 
Power consumption will scale even higher when we get multi chip graphics cards. Remember the dual GPU cards of yore? Really fast, really high power consumption.

Dual GPU is dead and buried. I mean hell, notice the benchmarks you posted are 12 years old?

I miss the era of cards like the 590 and 6990, but short of some magical leap in MCM design, they're not coming back.
 
I mean I could never afford (let alone find) the RTX 3090 Ti, but still, that's a whole lot of power. As others have said, that's like running a small microwave.

Small? My full size microwave is rated for a maximum of 900W, so no - not small. Not in any sense of the word.

This is ridiculous. We need to boycott certain NVIDIA products to get this mess under control.
 
For the not well informed, those huge W numbers are needed for stability since there will be some HUGE W spikes using probably more than 800W since the 350W RTX3090 has some spikes that surpass 450W. That is the reason why GPU makers propose much higher PSU W than their GPU's average power draw. For stability.

They should have just shipped it without a cooler then since you're going to need LN2 or phase change to keep this space heater cool.

Yeah the air cooler is almost pointless these days. It'll just thermal throttle all the time with it.
 
Don't see the issue really, it's a niche card aimed at niche users.
 
You'd still need a helluva loop for a 900w+ GPU+CPU.

I doubt water cooling will allow the GPU to consume 500+ watt (average, not peak) while still remaining stable.
And no a helluva loop probably won't be needed. According to Newton's Law of Cooling, if the heat output was say 300 watt at 55 degree C GPU temperatre at ambient temperature of 25 degreee C, you would need 600 watt worth of heat to reach 85 degree C. Basically heat transfer (in terms of watts) is proportional to temperature delta.

At that point, stability will become a big issue.

I'm holding out for the Global Warming Deuterated Edition that will feature deuterium compounds in the board components.

I can't imagine there being a large enough demand in the gaming market for these cards, so they're obviously targeting miners. Unless these cards were packing an additional 3,000-5,000 CUDA cores and a big jump in RT/Tensors, I wouldn't want to be using something like that for rendering since it wouldn't make much of a difference in iray rendering speeds to justify the extra power(and $ cost) in comparison to the Kingpin RTX 3090. A while back I do recall saying that if things continue in the direction of this trend, we'll be installing another range or dryer outlet in our homes for desktops.

Well 900 watt GPU, plus say 200 watt CPU is much more than 600 watts, which would reach more than 85c

Would be a bit pointless for a general consumer really with 975 watts

I would say maybe 10-15% at best. I know for iray rendering, its not going to be much of a difference(maybe a difference of 5-15 minutes render time depending on what is being rendered & how big the render window time frame is).

Why not? I was able to get the earlier Kingpin RTX 3090 without having to deal with the elite member bs. I just had to wait longer and pay a little more for it. Of course, this is before things went from hard/expensive to get to nonexistent. I don't understand, pro OC'ers? I'm not sure I would even want to OC a card that is difficult+expensive to get. I could see maybe for experimenting, but I certainly wouldn't want to be gaming or rendering with an OC on it, lol.
