EVGA Showcases X79 Dark Motherboard at CES

With Ivy Bridge-E expected to make its debut this year (Q3 according to roadmap leaks) EVGA has decided to take another look at the LGA2011 platform. This in turn led to the making of a new motherboard based on the Intel X79 chipset, the X79 Dark.

Seen at CES 2013, EVGA's new LGA2011 board bears a black and red color theme and features an E-ATX form factor, 12+1 phase PWM, eight DDR3 memory slots (supporting up to 64 GB of RAM), ten SATA ports (six are SATA 6.0 Gbps), five PCI-Express x16 slots (accompanied by switches that disable/enable them), dual Intel Gigabit Ethernet, four USB 3.0 connectors, Bluetooth, two eSATA ports, and 7.1-channel audio.

The X79 Dark also has an angled 24-pin power connector, a debug LED, EVBot support, plus Power, Reset and Clear CMOS buttons. The motherboard is expected to arrive towards the end of Q1, or in early Q2.

this is how EVGA mainboards need to look!.. and those 90-deg angled power connectors are just beautiful.

90º angled connectors/ports should be industry standard by now, where applicable (Mandatory for SATA ports).

All EVGA boards look awesome, X79 FTW/Classified too.
I always feel like that, when some new series need to show up, GPU or motherboards from them I expect best look always.

After P55 series I can't remember one board to say Ahhh this is nothing special.

I try not to get too caught up in how a board looks since it has no real world application or practical function. Generally speaking I don’t much care how a board looks. Once installed I don't expect to look at it again (much) unless there is either a problem to be fixed or an upgrade.

In other words the racing stripe on the side does "not" make it go faster,....

Also I’m not so sure how accessible those angled connectors would be in some case designs. For example that 6 pin connector at the bottom left of the board could be difficult to work with on some case designs that have the PSU directly under it. The angled 24 pin power connector could be difficult to work with in some cases with non-removable HDD cages.

Having said all that though, there really doesn’t seem to be anything that makes this board special. X79 / LGA2011 motherboards were released in late 2011 and here we are in early 2013. As I recall the X79 chipset felt rushed since some features that were expected were dropped in order to meet the scheduled release.

It’s a new board, technically, but I don’t see much of anything new beyond that.

Because maybe this board is only going to support i7s, not Xeons.

The current EVGA X79 line up has been plagued with issues since they came out; there was like a bios a month. Also notice there were hardly any reviews when X79 launched compared to Asus or Gigabyte. It's a shame because I was considering the EVGA X79 SLI back then.

Since when Shamino left? Evga motherboard was a worthy buy on 1366, after that it has been nothing but a trail of shame for them, they should stick to GPUs, maybe expand to AMD/ATI GPUs.

I felt bad for them when I saw TTL's SR-X review.

It looks real nice and like the 90 degree, but EVGA boards remind me of OCZ SSD's, when they work great, but when they break your SOL.

Wonder if they will do a proper Watercooling edition of this. Make the X79 heatsink a waterblock, make that red EVGA logo clear, with G1/4 threads, not those tiny little barbs they put on a previous board. Now that would sell.
