NVIDIA looks to restore the market position it lost to ATI in the past two quarters. Its plans will be spearheaded by the G200b graphics processor, on which are based products that outperform and offer better value than ATI products in its price-bands. The GeForce GTX 280 lost its position as the fastest graphics card to the Radeon HD 4870 X2. While NVIDIA is looking to establish itself as the maker of the fastest grachics card with the dual-G200b based GeForce GTX 295, the Radeon HD 4800 Series faces a two-pronged attack from NVIDIA's products, in which the GeForce GTX 285, will fit in as a sub-$400 product that looks to be "too good for its price to opt for a Radeon HD 4870 X2". The GeForce GTX 285 comes with reference clock-speeds of 648 MHz (core), 1476 MHz (shader) and 2484 MHz (memory).

German website ComputerBase.de put the GeForce GTX 285 (GeForce GTX 280 overclocked to its specs) through a broad range of games and synthetic benchmarks. Its evaluation found the GeForce GTX 285 living-up to NVIDIA's performance projections when pitted against a GeForce GTX 280, that of increments of roughly 10%. The review was conducted at a set resolution of 1680x1050, with different AA/AF modes.

The full review (in German) can be read here (Google Translated to English).

I thought it was suppose to be twice as powerful as a 4870x2?

Where did you read that? Are you confusing it with the GTX 295? Even that isn't 2x as fast from whatever I know.

Its NOT a GTX285 .

Its an overclocked GTX280. Anyone with a GTX280 can publish a review like that. I don't know how this made to TPU news.

Yeah, right in the review, it says its an overclocked GTX280.

Nvidia GeForce GTX 285 (648/1.476/1.242), 1,024 MB (simulated by overclocking the GeForce GTX 280)

thats probably true but it works if you want to show the theorical power of the gtx 285

its like if you disable the L3 cache of a x4 phenom and downclock the ht and what u have? An theorical athlon x4, not ?

Mentioned that in the news.

Oh sorry it was the 295

Well i was wondering, if we then OC the gtx 285 to a higher settings, would dat beat the 4870X2 at stock speeds? I assume these reviews r taken with the 4870X2 at stock speeds right? I dont know how good the X2 OCs but wouldnt the X2 be unbeatable once it's OCed?

the 4870x2 like Hercules , every time new hero come and want challenge him , and always see 4870x2 stand and see what this fool want , like the others heroes he beat them using one hand. ( the other hand is direct bridge between the two gpu's )

It is time for ATI to enable CrossFire Sideport in HD 4870 X2...Maybe with Catalyst 9.1

Too bad the GTX 295 takes the crown and thumps the 4870X2 in Crysis Warhead and CoD:WaW (by over 50%) as well as winning just about every other modern game.

stupid fanboys ruining everything :shadedshu

I highly doubt that is anywhere near the truth. wait for the release before you believe anything.

So u know what cards are in production and getting ready to buy it.

I know what is out there from all the different real world reviews., I can sspeculate in my mind where the 285 will be, but I am one of those persons that isn't worried about power consumption, so going to a smaller GPU just to save power and get 10% is a yawner to me.

I will take advantage of all the people selling the older EVGA GTX280's and go tri SLI on the cheap...

Did you actually play that video? Once you do you will notice the black flickering in the forest. This is not suppose to happen. Also, if you look at the FO3 video you will see ground shimmering. I actually like the idea of seeing a video of what was benched (assuming that was the area benchmarked).
