AMD has yet again stepped up excitement and anticipation surrounding a product-launch. This time, it's the company's fastest GPU: the RV790, whose single-GPU product, the Radeon HD 4890, is dressing up to go to office between April 6~8 worldwide. Taiwanese tech community website XFastest went found that volumes of the card by AMD partner Gigabyte have already reached a certain store.

The Gigabyte Radeon HD 4890 1 GB (model: GV-R489-1GH-B) is based on AMD's reference design, which has been pictured earlier, and whose early 3DMark performance figures have began surfacing. The card, features 1 GB of GDDR5 memory, which now seems to be the standard amount of memory on the reference design card. The unboxed card has been pictured from a good angle, which gives us a better indication of its length. It is longer than the HD 4870. Another scoop we can bring to you, is that from the first picture of the RV790 GPU that was published by DailyTech, it has been observed that the die is slightly larger than that of the RV770. What makes it larger is not known at this point in time.

"Larger die" is very interesting indeed! I was thinking they were going to cut out some of the useless parts of the RV770 perhaps leading to a somewhat smaller die. Maybe they've added something?

Or spread everything apart to reduce leakages.

The cooler makes it look like an oversized G80 8800GTS to me.. Not a bad thing, I thought they are sweet looking cards :)

How come that 4890 looks like it needs 6+8 pin instead of 6+6...i thought only the ES samples had 6+8, and the retail samples would go back to 6+6
 
crazy ass mutant card. Well i did say I haven't seen one and now I have.
 
Crazy. At least its fortunate that it still has 2six-pins. If the PCB is big, and the performance is NEVER going to change, is the only benefit better overclocking?
 
My only complaint atm is the re-use of the previous sticker/img. These are big company and they can't afford to design a new sticker for a new card? It's sickening. I'm talking about both ATI and Nvidia partners. PS, the Sapphire chick is the ugliest thing I've ever seen even though I have it in my system right now. I least they should give different perspective on that same model but no they just re-use that same pose.
 
I still think the 'OC' editions will use 6+8-pin. Long ago it leaked that the reference versions would come first, and OC editions at 'up to 950mhz' around the end of the month (to go with rv740?). It would make sense, as 950mhz would seem tough to obtain within 225W with a die the size of rv770, let alone something bigger. 300W would, in theory, also allow for more headroom if there is raised voltage to the chip.

I think the OC editions will be clocked at 950mhz, run at a fairly high voltage (and tdp), and shoot for competing with the 285. IOW, they could have similar performance, with the ati chip being smaller (cheaper to sell and/or more profit for ATi) but use more power (bad for consumer, but many don't seem to take power consumption into consideration) when compared to the 285.

If they do that, I question why they didn't do it sooner. It would make sense from a "one small chip to rule them all" scenario. Maybe 200W-210W and and 230-240W TDPs?

If you think about it, such a chip could effectively replace the 4850x2 in the same power envelope, as well as explain why there is no 'x2' model for the '90 range.

It also would explain why Sapphire has been on such a crusade to get rid of the 4850x2's as of late. One chip always makes more sense than two, if you can get relatively the same amount of performance from it, as it's bound to be more lucrative for everyone involved.

Larger die? Hopefully more ROPs, if not then more shaders. Is there a price drop for the 4870 yet?
 
one thing they need to get away from is the blower type fan, it doesnt work very well because there is not much area to the blades, look at the Thermaltake Cooler that has the same price as the DuoOrb but doesnt have the performance of it.

I was thinking the same thing?I can hardly see any difference between them 2 pcbs pictured and i seen on other forums that its an overclocked 4870.:)
 
These growing card lengths are absolutely ludicrus in a age where everything is getting smaller. I have a good size ATX case and 2x HD3870s and I seriously wonder if this new card will fit in it, nevermind the aspect of PCB warping. I bet manufacturers get more RMAs due to PCB warping than anything else these days.

When they start getting bigger than the 4850X2 then I'l worry but hell the 11 inch gtx's are touching my HDD cables which is rediculous considering they are coming out with a mobile version.
