I was just playing around with some settings and for the first time ever I unlinked the core/shaders, after playing for a bit I kep the core at 800 and increased the shaders from 1625 to 1647!!!!! It failed Furmark at that shader speed but got thru it at 1645! I doubt wether it would survive 2006 at that speed but hey....lets play!

But the stock cooler is quite good imo, I can deal with 70-80% fan speed for lower temps, better airflow, and a little more noise, more air noise than fan noise.

No darn, missed that, I decided on such short notice to get this I haven't done a lot of research yet... I'll probably just run mine at 100% fan until I get a cooler. My 9800gtx barely breaks 60c even under crysis, so I'm hoping the stock 280 cooler does about the same. Also, I'm contemplating a 24" samsung, but not sure if that's too high a res for crysis to maintain 40-50fps at all high and aa with even this card. 1920x1200 that is...

Why don't you link your best 2006 score. Anyone can turn up precision to whatever they want. Sorry if I'm a bit skeptical but I don't see anyone else anywhere near the clocks. A 790 linked 3D06 score?

Well I'm sure it'll run warmer than a GTX260, with extra shaders, rop's, voltage, etc. I think 70C would probably be expected for load temps. Try the fan speeds, 100% there's a lot of air moving, more air noise than motor noise. But the OE cooler does a damn good job imo...they did a good job on this cooler.

I find that my stock cooler is more than upto the job, and to be honest, whilst I have a decent case with secent airlow, I kind of like the idea that most of the hot air gets sucked out the back.

Yeah but can they then bench? For example I have hit over 16000 on Fluidmark at 800 on core linked (screenie on a previous page, I spose "anyone" can do that? (according to your theory you can?)..... but I'll give 2006 another try, I have only ran 2006 once with this card and that was the 2nd day I had it, it completed linked at 780 then but the card has come on a little since then with some mods...so hopefully it will, at the end of the day, Crysis and COD4 are far more GPU demanding than 2006 and I can play them at that speed but we will see, 2006 can be a little finecky at times!

Lol, I edited above! Have you tried fluidmark? if so, whats the highest settings you can do it on as a matter of interest?

I didn't give up on the 756/1512 oc, dispite CoD4 SP all maxed out would crash.
Two bios changes and some gfx settings in CoD4 made me play one hour SP w/o issues

PCI-e voltage to +0,1v
PCI-e freq to 102MHz

CoD4, 2xAA only vs 4xAA before, no Soften Smoke or Glow, corpses Large vs Insane

729/1512/1215 would crash CoD4 w/o the changes, 756/1512/1224 went along 60mins.

Or, maybe it still is unstable, but improved some...time will tell

See thats strange, I can play COD4 at 19xx resolution with max everything at just 675mhz on the core with shaders linked, 70% fan, smooth as silk? sounds to me like driver problems?

No, I only did it for a stability test ie, I didnt overclock my CPU or change Control Panel to performance settings or even shutdown any processes, my CPU is being passively cooled ATM hence why I dont go above 3.2gig although I have taken it out tonight as Eavier has bought it hence why I said that on Thursday when my Q9650 arrives, I will be doing a shitload of testing and I will do a full performance run then, if my memory serves me correctly the SM2 and SM3 scores were pretty similar, around 8000 I think.

Yeah, if I was at the point now where I didnt have the card and I was just thinking about it, I would def wait for the 260+ or whatever they will call it. I was pondering when I got this one 10 days ago whether to get the 280, I am glad I didnt now because this gives me all I need, benchmarking is not really that important to me, I have been overclocking on and off for near on 10 years, spent over 2 years in these forums just trhying to saty in the top 5 of every damn bench thread they had..... when you look back and see just how much money you have spent it's frightenening!

hear, hear! Just my two cents, to me, 3DMark or benchmarking tools are just a testing tool for stability and to see if it improve the scores/frame-rates, etc. Problem is that far too many is using this as a bragging right - especially 3DMark, like it is an extension of their manhood! The truth is that whoever has the deepest pocket will have the highest score anyway.

But in saying so, I still love to see the scores posted (any kind of benchmarking) just to see what others is able to do with similar hardware and the improvement in score, when you push from say 720 to 750, etc. Because sometime, higher OC doesn't necessary translate into peformance gain (percentage wise)...

Hey, do any of you guys tweak image quality settings in any way in the driver settings panel when benchmarking, or do you just leave it at default/quality?

I just leave my card at default "let the 3D application decide" rather than tweaking the image settings...

I do the same as chickenworm and just do the 3d settings in the game. I suppose if you want max IQ forcing AA and AF in NVControl Panel would help...though I find most games have the settings in-game that do a good enough job imo.
