It would seem the demo for the HalfLife2 RTX mod is available. I know there are some HL2 fans here at TPU and thought this would be of interest!
Looks good! There are only two levels to play though..
The minimum specs state a 3060, but a 2070/2080 series cards will work fine.
Here's a run on a 4060 and he starts out on ultra. He does tinker with the setting a bit as he goes through.

Edit: Based on the reviews in the Steam page it would seem Radeon RX7000 and RX9000 cards will work well too!
So it's not just NVidia riders that can enjoy this one!

I do like the idea of adding RT to older games but... I also don't like the idea of ONLY adding RT to them.

If a game undergoes straight up complete overhaul so it's only the story and (if feasible) most of the character design left of the original game but the graphics, physics and mechanics had been tuned to match the today's gaming standards then RT feels an appropriate cherry on top. Of course that means it's no longer the same game and it might feel odd to play, especially if you're a retro diehard but for gamers like me it would be a better option.

When it's just RT it feels like some old Toyota Corolla with professional racing tires and a supercharger. Might be cool if you're a six grader but pointless.

Have you seen Quake1 RTX? I won't play it any other way anymore. It looks/feels that good. I'm excited for HL2+RT, but the Steam client requirement is sticking in the craw...

the RTX version runs about the same as I played in when it first came out. Sub 20 FPS :)
I thought you had a beefy GPU?

Yeah, didn't like it. Not that I liked the original Quake 1 anyway. Liked the Quake III much, much more.

Spending $3K on the 5090 gets you a gloriously choppy 30-40 FPS
If I didn't know you were were joking, I would think you're daft in the head..

Quake1 is one of those games that was ground-breaking but also had to tickle the fancy. There is Quake2 RTX as well, which also looks brilliant and runs like a dream!

True and this is why I respect both the title and the creators but this doesn't mean I have to love playing it. Not my jam whatsoever.

As with Portal RTX, open the remix menu and reduce bounce lights to 2, and use dlss, that's how I got that running smooth on a 3080.

You're thanking NVIDIA for AMD being too slow and with outdated priorities in hardware prior to RDNA4? Should progress stop and stoop to lowest common demoninator?

Game looks nice and framerates are fine too.

I think they broke bunny hopping and collision boosting in this. I can't do any of the movement tricks properly. Wasn't this based on the OrangeBox engine? Or did they use the updated one from Portal 2?

I did not and I wasn't addressing HL2 RTX remaster specifically, I was just answering the question in the poll. Shared the vibe I have, that's all. Will watch the video later when my eyes will allow me to rate it properly (didn't sleep since yesterday and it's 10:22 pm here).

These are official recommendations:

And this is the kind of performance to be expected with the 50 series. MFG 4x and DLSS4 in performance mode in 2160p (1080p render resolution), balanced in 1440p (835p) and quality in 1080p (724p):

Nvidia also has a breakdown of recommended settings for the 40 and 30 series in this article:

This bit has me worried though. Will make 1:1 benchmarking impossible if widely adopted:

I get ~60 fps in DLSS performance without framegen and on Ultra settings preset on OCed 5080. 200 with MFG set to 4x :D Doesn't look bad with artifacts, other than grass then when you swoop with a gun through it, it gets confused and there are artifacts.

Are you kidding? I just posted a video above showing a 4060 getting those same frame rates at more or less the same settings. Where-ever those graphs came from, they are absolute twaddle. Get out here with that nonsense..

I have a 4060 can't wait to try it tonight.
Play with your settings, but you should have fun. If you don't have the full HalfLife 2 yet, might be a good time to buy it.

Sampler Feedback too.
Just watched that. I'm impressed. This could solve a few problems for cards with limited VRAM.

Nevermind all the glitches still work. :D Wallclimbing with Frame Generation on is a laggy mess and I forgot you have to actually back hop first in order to bunny hop.
