I received a reply from HIS product support today for the problem notification I filed over the weekend (basically stating the info in my OP). Here is their tantalizingly obfuscated response:
"These two bios should be ok, because the ram of the boards are different.
You can check the marking on the ram surface, it should be different of these two boards."
Different RAM? Different how, me wonders. I will take a look this evening and let you know if I discover anything interesting. Of course, I'm not about to let HIS off the hook yet by telling them that I've since resolved the problem and tweaked my vBIOS in the bargain. I'm having too much fun grilling them about the discrepancies in their manufacturing process. *evil grin*
