WTF =:kookoo:

Picture proof bill and did you not build any P3/Athlon/duron systems
Early PGA versions have an exposed die,

AMD and exposed Die

Explain these Retail pic's then bill
and those old threads " i think i over tightened my Heat sink and i think i cracked my Die"

Oh and by the way Bill "do you know what those 4 pads surrounding the AMD Die were for???"
This reminds me of my AMD Athlon XP 2500+ Barton core CPU. Looked very much like these, but with an elongated die and brown PCB. It did get chipped in a couple of places too, but to this day, still works perfectly and still overclocks to a 3200+ (2.2GHz I believe) by simply setting the multiplier.

I technically still have it, in the form of a PC that I've loaned to a friend, but I don't want it back, lol.

Arctic Clean 2 surprises me at removing stains. I think it's 100% isopropanol alcohol.

Could you be more specific
Left hand thread or right hand
AF metric or whitworth

You could figure that out yourself, it's a screw

Back onto the subject of heatsink Stain otherwise we'll devolve into other Stains
Chrome cleaner (solvol Autosol ) mixed with a small drop of distilled water on truegrit 2000 wet and Dry paper
on a piece of float glass would lap it clean and polish it to a flat mirror finish followed by 100% Alcohol swabbing to remove any Residue left

I'm perfectly fine with a topic evolving or tacking on a few side discussions so long as it stays informative. Should the mods, since I'm quoting one, feel this deserves to be handled in a new thread. So be it.

Looking at the TIM spread its not awful however the bottom right could be better. It seems that somewhat knackered screw is resulting in less than optimal pressure on that side. Pressure means a great deal in terms of heat transfer. A good example is the Scythe Fuma cooler its a dual tower dual fan heatsink that was about $50 but was nearly in the same league as the Noctua NH-D15 and 240mm AIO coolers and that is because it had a much higher mounting pressure. Enough so it could cause the thinner PCBs on the newer CPUs from Intel to bend which was obviously a bad thing. However it did result in a cheaper cooler offering far more performance than it had any right to.

As mentioned upthread the idea of cracking the mb or bending pins was mortifying. Especially when talk of lapping heatsinks to get a secure bond with the processor brought up just such damage.

What exactly would non-fatal damage from a heatsink look like that would be viewable without removing the processor?

What signs would the computer show if pins were bent?

Its dependent on what pins are bent, some can cause cpu detection problems, ram detection problems, pcie bus speed less than advertised. Bsods, system not booting up at all.

Lapping a heatsink or CPU shouldn't have anything to do with bent pins. As crazyeyesreaper and eidairaman1 mentioned, too great of a mounting pressure can cause problems with pins not connecting. The most common problem (that I've seen) was magical missing RAM that reappeared when the heatsink was remounted. There was a bout of issues like that when Skylake was released, because of the thinner substrate compared to its predecessor. The thinner substrate was more susceptible to bending under the weight of the cooler. I'm not sure if it's happened with any AIO coolers (like corsair h100) being overtightened, but it seemed most common with heavy air coolers.

Not overly prone to imaginative projections. Still a bit concerned about getting a little too enthusiastic tightening my cooler. Pulled the fan last night and spent awhile balancing tension and amount of screw threads showing. Everything seems stable and I'd like to see if thermals change within the 200 hour TIM install period.

This has been a fun couple of days while I line up more crusty overused computers to rip apart. Certainly done wonders to banish all thoughts of slapping a 3lb chunk of aluminum onto a motherboard sideways.
