We're going to watch the prices during Black Friday and the following Monday to see if there are any savings, but I'll be ordering everything next week one way or another. I'll bump this post with info as I attempt the build in a couple weeks.

Any last words of advice or suggestions for the overall PC build? Am I missing anything crucial? Any new cool tech that I ought to invest in?

Ordered everything yesterday! Was going to purchse two of these monitors: http://pcpartpicker.com/part/asus-monitor-vg248qe

But newegg sold out of them. I think I'll wait and see if there are any good deals on solid monitors this Monday. If not I'll have to find something else. Any suggestions for good gaming monitors sub$300?

Next weekend cannot come fast enough.

Build Update: Case arrived first on Wednesday evening. It is beautiful but about 500 times bigger than I expected. Surprise #1. My wife and I muddled over it for a while, moving the case here and there and ultimately decided that we're okay with how gigantic it is. It will ultimately make it easier to expand later on. Sorry for the gigantic picture.

Yesterday evening all of the remaining PC parts arrived, minus the two gigantic monitors we snagged on Cyber Monday.

It took me a few hours to build, mostly trying to figure out the motherboard layout. I was super nervous about applying the thermal compound, I don't think I messed it up completely, but it wasn't as clean as I'd have liked.

Ultimately though, everything went together pretty well and it booted up. When I get home today we'll start all the installs.

Ugh, the cables are awful. It's just a huge bird's nest shoved in the side panel. I tried to be tidy as I was putting everything together, but it's a disaster.

It's not a big deal. Now that you got it together and you know it works, you can work on the cables. You might need to disconnect one by one and route them through the cutouts, and use some zip ties, but in the end it will be worth it. It's a no-pressure thing!

A note about the SSD, you went with, and changed.

The Samsung uses a cheaper Nand Memory. The Crucial uses the better one. Difference is two fold.

Crucial uses the better memory. The Controller's are different.

I have a Crucial in my laptop.

MX100 256MB.

I expect it will last me a longer time than the EVO..Due to the better NAND.

My 2 cents!

AS an aside, since I am so late to this thread, I love the Table!!

Plus, Orange walls..I could go on and on.. Orange, very nice!

Also, congrats on your first build.

My first still has cable issues!! A Socket A, that is getting a new-ish, MB, soon!

It has been my understanding, what little there is of this subject, that MLC NAND is better than Toggle NAND. MX100 is MLC, EVO is Toggle.

That was the basis for my comment, and why I bought the Crucial over the similarly price EVO. I hope I wasn't making the wrong assumptions!! :eek:

Maybe you're confusing Toggle with Triple-Level Cells (TLC) NAND.

Toggle is a type of interface and it can use any kind of NAND (SLC, MLC, TLC). The competing standard is ONFI. Samsung and Toshiba use Toggle interfaces, everyone else uses ONFI.

SLC is the best but density is very low (i.e. expensive)
MLC is the most extended among consumer level drives. Suffers from more wear and tear than SLC.
TLC is the new NAND developed by Samsung. Has all the disadvantages of MLC and then some but it excels in speed and density (600MBps 1TB SSD please!). TLC must be paired with a top notch controller to make the most of it.

Ok, so I am a dufus, concerning SSD tech. I know it. But while researching SSD's, Kingston had some bad reviews concerning their drives, people saying they changed the type of memory, mid production run, and it was not good. Meanwhile, Crucial comes up with the MX100, and although speed wise it is not as fast as an EVO, I remember the read/write lifespan was greater w/ the MX100.

I read that as meaning it had better quality, not as fast, memory. Since my computer boots in under 10 seconds, now, I do not think the EVO would make a difference, both drives 256GB.

I have great faith in my Crucial, and I am extremely impressed with it. Even after two weeks, it shows no signs of slowing down.
