High RX 6750 XT hotspot temps?

Hey guys,

Just got my Gigabyte Gaming OC RX 6750 XT back from RMA, and I'm very wary of this card as it has given me some black screen issues and I think I am close to running out of having any right to get this resolved.

After I start 3DMark Time Spy, or stress the GPU in any other similar way, the hotspot temperature will immediately jump to above 110C and remain around 110C (above and below) for the entirety of the time it's being stressed. I have attached a screenshot of my temps about 2 seconds after the 3DMark Time Spy benchmark started.

The GPU temp itself stays pretty low.

This isn't normal, right? I'm not sure if I'm being paranoid, as it performs better than average in 3DMark, and doesn't seem to be throttling too severely (although it is throttling somewhat).

What's the way forward? Get a refund and go for a 7700 XT or something (I think I can get one)? Trust Gigabyte with a second RMA? Or am I just being totally paranoid?

I would really appreciate some advice!

It doesn't really correlate with the GPU temp, usually at load you will only find a 20c or so difference between GPU and hotspot, I personally wouldn't be happy running it with that high of a hotspot temp, the fact it happens as soon as any kind of load is applied as well is odd, could well be a faulty sensor reading, though I'd still be inclined to return it and go for the 7700xt

No, it's not normal. It's terrible.

Hotspot around 100-105 °C with GPU temp not far behind is ok, but in your case, there's a 50 °C delta between the two, which means there are parts of the GPU die that don't come into contact with the cooler due to bad thermal paste application or mounting pressure.

I'd RMA it straight away.

Exactly. 50C delta is a clear indicator that something's not fine under the cooler.

Trust Gigabyte with a second RMA?
That's a tough spot. You could try a couple things to get a better handle on the problem.
Try taking the side off you case, and maybe even blowing a fan on the whole system. If temps improve a lot then you probably need more airflow.
Try reducing the power limit by 5 or 10 percent and see what happens. If you still have a big delta maybe it's bad contact.
Maybe it's a wonky sensor.
How serious are your black screen issues, and can you reproduce them?
If you send it back and it passes tests and "GPU temp itself stays pretty low" and "performs better than average" what should they do?
That delta does look crazy and my buddy has a couple of these gigabyte 6750 cards in fairly small cases and he's not noticed anything like this.

It's not gonna help. GPU temperature is extremely low already, and the card is throttling itself to keep hotspot within 110 °C. It's definitely a contact issue. RMA.

I have a 6750XT in a computer and its Gigabyte and it behaves the same. It still works after 2-3 years or so ... I think its a problem with their heatsink design/manufacturing.

Repaste it. (Properly)

A good repaste or good thermal compound can make 10 degree difference in between core and hotspot.

Hotspot = hottest area of the GPU.

My 6700XT from AMD (not custom) shows like a 2 to 8 degrees difference between the GPU temp and the hotspot temp.
Ok the 6750XT is hotter due to higher clocks and all but your card shouldn't have like a 50+ degrees difference between the GPU temp and the hotspot.

Did you try to clean install the drivers (using the AMD cleaner) and check again ? Maybe it's a drivers' bug.

If it's not, RMA while you can. There might be something wrong, either the probes (sensors) or the cooler.

Another very stupid way fix throttling is true morepowertool to disable hot spot throttling :D (if the probes are bad - the temp is off by huge margin ... if they are not bad then you will fry the gpu)

You have to take the card apart and apply more TP. That is a common problem with all Gigabyte cards. The first time I saw it was the Vega 64 and the next time was the 6500XT and it was the exact same issue. The shrouds are too big to give that temp variation.

Send those screenshots to the Gigabyte support when applying for RMA.
For you to know, my 1080Ti was from Gigabyte and it just died 3 years after I bought it. Bad luck maybe but out or the RMA window for me...
Just don't try your luck if you can just get your hardware replaced.

Survey says... Cooler sucks!!!

20240406_221404.jpg

The paste in the ribs is the problem.
I'd say the ribs are the problem... where there is a rib there is a void where there are no contact made with the chip. Who knows, maybe after a day or 2 the paste will get "hot" and temps will improve.. i've seen it in the past. Like it thins out and contact improves..

Will report back in a day or 2.

Anyway, if it's still possible to get the hardware replaced when there is an issue, just get it replaced. If not, yeah ok try to do things and...blacklist Gigabyte maybe xD

Well, Gigabyte are kind of hit or miss here. My previous 2 HD7950 still works flawlessly even if one of the fans in one of those kicked the bucked long ago.. As for the 6750XT, it works fine... When it's not overheating... Still, it sees a lot less action now that i also have a 6800XT..

20240209_212916.jpg

Funny thing is, when the card is not loaded, the temps are the most stable you'll ever see. But apply a load on it and....

20240406_223229.jpg

Moral of the story. Until they improve their Coolers, Gigabyte will be firmly established in the "entry level" category in my mind..

Trust me just take the 8 screws out and apply a thick application of Tp. That way if the ribs suck up some the Core will still have some to keep the heat in check.. That is why Gigabyte cards are cheaper. Next time I would recommend gettign As Rock the next time. They rival the price as well.

If your warranty window is passed, maybe find another cooler, it could be better than trying to fix the impossible. Thermal paste doesn't do magic if everything is wrong with the cooling system.

I will just blacklist Gigabyte for the next 20 years. I had a good motherboard but after few years it began unstable, my 800+€ 1080Ti died in 3 years...yeah this brand just stinks hard.

If you can RMA, do it. Maybe sell the replaced hardware just when you get it and go buy anything else. If you can't, yeah, thermal paste but still, you would see if every crucial components are safe under the cooling system or not. Back in the old days, there were brands making cheap air GPU cooling systems but this time is over, sadly.

Well, i repasted it as it seems Kapone allready had good luck repasting Gigabyte cards. Plus, i had some paste around and it only took about 15 minutes. Easy peasy. Unfortunately for OP and less so for me, that cards cooler sucks and repasting it won't do miracles. Right now, we know that.. Case is closed.

I'm glad you managed to fix it then =)
I hope you would have a better luck next time your get to buy a Gigabyte product.

Wasn't "malfunctioning" per se.. and it seems working okay-ish now. The temps are horrible but as we now know, it's the nature of the beast.

And I thought my GPU core temps were bad! (very high delta)

Mine are normally something like this:

43C GPU 73C GPU hotspot (it often will reach 78C)

-----------------------------

On my Sapphire Nitro+ RX 6750 XT.

At least the final sum isn't bad like yours. I haven't seen it reach 90C. Wonder if it's the GPU Vcore being at 1200mV?! Should I undervolt?

Those are the temps I get at 2.9 GHz.
