Homeworld 3 is the latest installment in the epic space RTS series. Thanks to Unreal Engine, you get upgraded visuals and combat in real three-dimensional environments. In our performance review, we're taking a closer look at image quality, VRAM usage, and performance on a wide selection of modern graphics cards.

What's the story connection here? HW2 didn't leave wiggle room from what I recall and DoK was a prequel.

I am a bit taken aback by the CPU load...I mean the test system has i9-14900K....and it was mentioned dips to the twentyish FPS. Other than that looks pretty reasonable to me.

I don't understand the Denuvo software activation thing. When does this activation occur? How does it prevent measuring CPU load?

Running the internal benchmark it does that to me starting out in the 60fps (because vsync on) and dipping as low as the mid 20's with 5950x and 4060 (low profile) with most of the graphs saying I'm GPU bound.

So, you get the "epic" setting even if you buy the game on Steam? And what about GOG?

....I don't understand why they put RT in games when it has meaningless impact in the final image because of the type of the game or when they don't know how to implement it correctly.

The same reason VR-Ready was plastered on motherboards, cases, toasters and lawn mowers.... now it's AI, RT and Upscaling.

Anyway, this game is so light on requirements that I wonder if it was worth benchmarking it. :toast:

Well at the end of HW2 we have opened Balcora gate and the progenitors gate network so who knows....

Spoiler to the near end of HW2

Homeworld 1 really was a game changer. I got the demo on a disc in a magazine, I played it over and over again. I'll definitely pick this up, may just hold off for a bit due to backlog of games I have to get through.
I was kind of hoping Homeworld 3 would mix it up and have planetary side quests Deserts of Karak style or at least any side quests at all.

Yeah, having to deal with formations in 3D for the first time was something else. Got the demo on a magazine CD as well.

Benchmark Scores bench...mark? i do leave mark on bench sometime, to remember which one is the most comfortable. :o
so, basically Epic+RT setting translate in a more foggy (and a bit blurry sometime) image o_O
funny, some of them look better on Low

and RT bring nothing (i would say "as usual" but personal opinion, not generalisation ) aside FPS drop ...

got the full game with a magazine CD :D then i bought HW1 remaster, HW:C and HW2 (got DoK free ... but not a huge fan aside for the story, it did not feel like HW ... more like Total Annihilations, tbf )

Interesting the 7700 XT does so poorly, even compared to the rather meh AMD showing in general. Must be a bottleneck somewhere.

Looking at the screenshot comparisons, I think I would just run "high" and bag the extra fps.

If you can only get 5 CPU benchmarks in a day, could you do something like a Ryzen 7 5800X, i5-13600K (maybe stock vs CPU and memory OC), Ryzen 7 7700X, and Ryzen 7 7800X3D, all with the 4090 at 1600x900? That way you cover the major architectures and can evaluate the impact of clock speed, memory, and 3D cache, and then pick the best performing CPU to do the GPU benchmarks with.

"Homeworld 3 is highly CPU-bound" - more like Denuvo-bound, time will tell though.

I was looking at that before scrolling to the relative chart. Lower end cards do quite well at 1080p and the game gets more CPU bound so higher end cards do pretty meh at 1440p and 4K, AMD's a little more so. And then there's the 7700 XT. Probably something that needs to be fixed in a driver update, same for the Arc A770.

The most interesting comparison (to me) is 6900xt vs. 7900gre & 7900gre vs. 7900xt (RT?). It's all over the place and kinda funny.

I ran the game on a 1050 Ti at 1920x1080 all low and completed it. it's very playable. there is absolutely NOTHING to stress ANY system in homeworld
Nice. I'm gonna do the same with a 6500 XT soon. :pimp:
