That's why myself and others are recommending loading games off the drive. No discs... no worrying about the optical drive, or quality of the discs. You just install the game to the drive and it's there forever, provided the hard drive itself doesn't develop issues. You'll get better loading times and performance, too.
I want have any problems if the seller accepts my offer it had a new laser and fully refurbished .But you are right there.Someone on gumtree has one of those expansion bays if the sellers accepts i will see if they still have it.I have a number of ide drives.I am getting offers from other sellers given me more off than i asked off on the one i want.Appently i did not send the offer off.o_OIt was all ready to ve sent.

Got it and a few games all for the grand total of £50 including shipping :)Feature Blue LED lights when powered on Console has been fully refurbished and had a new laser-fitted,:) Sony PlayStation 2 (SCPH-50003) Custom Console & With Leads And Games. I am glad the guy on Gumtree did not get back to what I need now is a PS2 Network Adapter on Gumtree which is a journey across the other side of London.£5.

I thought I would try and find the video where the guy was talking about scratching discs on the slim, And came across this apparently there is a problem with it, but the guy gives a quick fix
I do agree with what you say people don't know how to hold CD./DVD discs same with Vynal LP.s . :(

I see from this video it is easy to get the case off and do some dusting in there. :)
It seems like it is a bad design
That is putting me off getting the Slim. :(

How can someone sell one like this I would not touch that with a barge pole. o_O
That's because it's a cheap way to hold the ribbon cable in place that doesn't last.

The ribbon cable has on one side of it a sticky area/spot like tape does that's supposed to hold that part of the cable in place. It's when the sticky stuff finally gives up is when the ribbon starts moving around, disc scratching starts and sometimes the cable getting ripped/shredded causing even more damage - Up to actually killing the machine.

I guess a tiny spot of super glue where the cable has to hold would suffice and make it more permenant but that's it.

I have three here, all of them had this happen to them.
One was a loose cable scratching discs, the other two were from a cable that came loose and got shredded - Both of the shredders BTW are dead, the scratcher still works BUT the disc drive no longer works because the spindle motor won't work and it's something electronic in the unit, not the spindle motor itself.
Probrably locked the disc and the little spindle motor burned up, killing the circuit that controls and drives it.

Fat is best. I have 2 fat and a slim

You can dump games to a hdd/ssd and such too.

There is a guy who made a recent update to opl/open ps2 loader to add games easier basically drag and drop. It's in beta currently.

You have so many tools to use it can get overwhelming. Youtube is great for tutorials.

Having a crt is nice I have a few and ps2 looks amazing with component cables. I have hd adapters too but crt cant be beaten.

Look what you made me do! :p

I went looking for PS2s bored out of my mind while testing my new PC, and I found someone selling a mint condition SCPH-10000 unit, this is a 23 year old PS2! First batch of them that came out in early 2000. I couldn't resist, I've wanted one for as long as I've been tinkering with old playstations and bought it. It's a piece of history, I will gladly have on my shelf beside my CECHA01 PS3. My next playthrough of Final Fantasy 12 will be the old-fashioned way. I somewhat regret selling my CECHB00 PS3 (all-black originally 20GB unit), but it had to go because I was really short on cash at the time. Happy to have found another one of the holy grail collectible units I've wanted for so long.

Expensive, though, converted to Uncle Sam's currency, that'd be $150! But who cares, that's what we have credit cards for. It's not every day you see a 23 year old console in great condition.

Unlike you, it would be very daunting for me to take it apart. I have just seen this. The seller said he had put a new laser in there. I sent him a message asking if it showed the right time and date. Because I did not want to open it up to put a new CMOS battery in there. I am hoping if he went to all that trouble to put a new laser in he would have put a new CMOS battery in there. It looks very cool. It looks like it has been cleaned. The console has been fully refurbished and had a new laser fittedView attachment 292232View attachment 292230

That's understandable, I've been tinkering around these things for a very long time. Like the other dudes suggested, the HD loader method is the way to go, pick up an aftermarket HDD bay that supports SATA to PS2 IDE conversion and install a 1 TB drive chock full of games. You can even use an USB stick to run games instead, though these USB 1.1 ports might give you a little grief.

Quite an intriguing paint job on it... it must be mechanically well cared for, so if the price is right, and you don't mind it not being all-original, it might just be worth it.

I just looked it up I see it is a Jap one and very rare. you must be in the US because it is NTSC, it is as you probably know it is Pal in the UK and Europe. Although I see there is one for £55 in the UK.No good to me in UK though. I don't know if you can convert NTSC to PAL if anyone did know it should be you, as you are very knowledgeable about the PS2. I don't know why some of them are so cheap from UK sellers. Probably because they can't be used in the UK. This one looks in pretty good nic. I see that Final Fantasy was the reason for having an HDD in it because the game was so big. Most of us have been in that position where we had to sell something to get us by. Thankfully I am not in that position anymore. :)It would be even more in the UK.That would be £120.50 in UK money. It does look in very good nic that is very true. :)

Do you use Ali Express? o_O It is such a confusing site ,so many different prices for the same thing.o_OAnd different postage i was on there for a PS2 Network Adapter
some of them were charging over £8 to the UK,For mine i got one free postage £10.50 of course i don,t know weather i will have to pay customs on top of that.o_OI wish the site worked like eBay.It is all over the place on there. These adapters are very expensive https://m.media-amazon.com/images/I/51Tfup1EU0L._AC_.jpg cheapest on Amazon £14 on eBayo_O I got one of these i just hope it works after seeing this guys video
o_OI could have got a ide one for £5.But thought if i could get a Sata at a reasonable price cheapest on eBay
£17 uk seller.I think it is not worried about it not looking origanal as long as it works ,i looked again at the sellers message to me and he did not mention about the CMOS battery.o_OI am hopping that he as he went so far as putting in a new Laser he would have replaced the CMOS battery it looks like it has been cleaned inside. Why are the Network adapters so fussy about what drives you can use with them?.I asked a lot pf sellers about weather or not it was showing the corect date and time only one came back to me ,he said he did not know as it had been packed up ready to sent out to who buys it.I don,t know why people can,t give a simple answer yes or no.o_O

Indeed it's a Japanese console, and no, I am in Brazil, there's consoles of all regions here in general as at the time a local console didn't exist. Games we get here are NTSC/U-C in general, but we do not use NTSC, we use PAL-M, though most televisions are multi-system. The problem as usual is the software region lock, but there are ways around it. As to where, Mercado Livre is our equivalent of eBay. Hope dude sends it soon.

That Game Star adapter is the same one I we used on the 39001 my brother got. It works well.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I think the slim version was released later, with updated and more efficient hardware. I have a slim one and couldn't be happier (the only thing I'm missing is a HDMI connection, which no PS2 has, unfortunately).

Very nice!

Mine happens to be a SCPH-35001 which is the model that was sold bundled with a copy of Gran Turismo 3.
Don't have the box because I simply had nowhere to keep it at the time because I was living in a small home - No real storage space to even speak of so it had to go but it's all here including the game copy it came with.
Could use a nice cleaning after all these years but overall it's in good shape, works fine to this day.
Only problem it's ever had was the laser eventually burning out as said earlier, which was fixed of course.

I don't know the model of mine, but it's a fat one, even came with a network adaptor, but I never had need for it. I used my PS2 a lot and not just for gaming, it was my main DVD player from 2005 to maybe 2008, when I got a PS3.

This thread is making me want to take my PS2 out of storage and see if it still works. Last time I played anything on it was probably a good 13 years ago when I played through my Baldur's Gate Dark Alliance games.

I really should get it out and set it up next to the Sega Genesis and mini-NES.

So you have to convert it to Pal, if anyone can do it you can you know your stuff.:)
I have only been doing this stuff for a year or so. From what I see most of them sold now are Game Star. The guy in the video must have got a Dodge one. His making a pig's ear out of trying to change the Ide into SATA with that adapter. There good on eBay I should do, thanks.:)

Careful with those cheap aftermarket "network" adapters. There's no network functionality to those at all. The real Sony version has Ethernet ports that you can use to connect your PS2 to your network. You'll want that to make it easier to pipe games over... else any time you want to install a new game, you either need the disc and hope the optical drive is still in good working order, or you'll need to pull the drive and connect it to your computer again.

They're not cheap. and most of them are the Game Star ones. Yes, I know about the non-functionality of the network stuff not that I need that anyway. There is a new laser in there anyway. :) Plus I have an external 3,5 so no problem of getting stuff off the PC. I don't have one for IDE Drives. I was looking for a cheap one for IDE drives but they are far too expensive.:(
Here's more info about the different models made:

Thanks. :) I see watching this video the X Box is a lot easier to take apart than the PS2.

Have you ever owned an X BOX ? if so how do you rate them to the PS2? I see that the X-Box is a lot more powerful than the PS2. I know very little about the X Box.

I've never owned one, but the original Xbox is a stronger console (it's essentially a Pentium III PC with a GeForce 3 GPU). Games like the original Fable and Halo released on it, and multiplatforms like GTA San Andreas run with better fidelity, frame rate and effects compared to the PS2 version. However, for most of its life, moddability wasn't on the table... all the while piracy essentially drove the PS2 to a dominant position in most of the world, in some countries like Brazil, to a cultural level.

All in all, it isn't much of a console you should be going after unless you're after a purist experience, IMO. The Series X can run physica One, 360 and original Xbox games through a pretty comprehensive and extensive backwards compatibility feature, so you can enjoy most if not all of its games on a new Xbox.

So that PS2 that I ordered arrived today, and it's indeed in pretty beautiful condition... except that it doesn't turn on. Something must have gotten loose during shipping inside, and I think I'll send it back to the seller. Parts for this specific model would be quite difficult to find, and I'm honestly not up for the repair. It's a shame. I'll message his contact first before filing a complaint with the website, see if I can deal with the guy in an amicable way.

Sorry to hear that . o_O That sucks :(.There are lot of videos on youtube showing the way some delivery people treat stuff. The seller should have had it insured in case of anything going wrong like on your PS2.Even though you know what you're doing as regards opening it up you should not have to do it.Send it back for a refund. You paid for something that should be as the seller said, working.Thats the good thing about eBay if it is not working you get your money back.

I had a slim one that I had owned since 2006, and when it finally died on me I bought a used fat style one so I could still play my old Gran Turismo games. For some reason, it is unable to read Gran Turismo 4, but has had no issues with any other game. I even borrowed a copy from my nephew to see if maybe my disc was at fault, but his wouldnt load either. Oddly enough, both my copy and his loads on his PS2 (his is the fat style as well). Just thought Id share my experience.

I mean there was even a formal receipt emitted, so I'll just action warranty and ask to return it. It's a shame, I really wanted to keep it.

Yes it just shows you something can look perfect but does not work.At the market today i saw a play station steering wheel for 50p but did not know how to connect it to a play station unit it just had two connectors just the steering wheel. What else do you need?

Yeah, I filed a complaint on the website. The seller has until Tuesday to accept or they'll intervene. It's great that we have buyer protection for things like this, I suppose. It's a shame, I was quite enthusiastic about it, even broke out my pristine Japanese copy of GTA Vice City to test the unit... but it didn't even power on

It was seller-refurbished, so my best guess is this unit had problems with the power supply, which was serviced, tested working for a while and put up for sale. Except that when it arrived here, knocks during shipping or whatever, it was no longer functional. Shame. I'll keep you posted on how it develops, but I suppose this is where my dream of owning the original Japanese PS2 ends.

If it hard been refurbished surley there should be no problem with it,thats the hole idea of refurbished. What do you think of the playstation driving wheel just the wheel.and small connectur and a bigger one on it ,it was an actuly PLAYSTATION modal.ust 50pI can,t see anywhere the two connecters would go on the PS3 .
