I see no future in consumer level Windows even for an enthusiastic casual who does no work related stuff.

I finally got a 10th generation i5 for Windows 11, but it would still be nice to keep the old machines.

‘fraid that would have to be done either by keeping them on unsupported Windows versions or going to a lightweight Linux distro then. MS are really serious about trimming down the legacy support bloat this time around.

Mechanical drives dont work in 11?
Yes, it does. The are no mechanisms that currently exist preventing Windows 11 from being installed & used on a HDD. I currently have a system with room for only one drive running 11 on a 4TB HDD. It runs fine.

That article is complete nonsense. It would be ultimately self-defeating for microsoft to attempt.

11 is 10 with more/bloat/menus tacked on
Not really. There is much more nuance than what you described.

Does this mean one can run Windows 11 LTSC on a machine that would otherwise stop at Windows 10?
No, Windows 11 LTSC will run on any hardware it's installed to. Just for reference, the current version of Windows 11 Pro that has bypasses properly configured will run on a Core2 Duo/Quad perfectly fine. This is something else I've tested.

So keep them.

I just tried Windows 11 LTSC on a Core 2 Duo and the CD seems to reboot (no installation, no error message)

That is likely an early build ISO. Wait for the official release. As stated above, the current versions of 11 Pro with bypasses properly configured, install fine on C2D/C2Q systems. Get yourself a 2H23 ISO of 11 Pro, Rufus it and Bobs your uncle.

I am glad you can tolerate the 11 UI, for me its unbearable. So having its own LTSC build isnt good enough.

The current Pro is not the 24H2 kernel, Lex. The LTSC is based on that and does not support CPUs without SSE 4.2.

Yup, that’s the behavior that indicates the extension support failure.

From what I've read, that is incorrect, Onasi. But I'm not going to debate the technical merits of this point as the only ISO's of LTSC available are purely uncertified and not considered stable. These are test release versions only and glitches are to be expected.

There is nothing to debate. The kernel is what it is, MS confirmed that it’s based on the new 24H2 one. Glitches and bugs will be ironed out, sure. But the actual binaries used are the same as the regular versions of 24H2. It requires POPCNT. Full stop. There was never in the entire history of 10 Enterprise versions a moment where the OS core itself differed from the “regular” one they were based on. With all due respect, you are incorrect here.

You're right, there is nothing to debate. I am currently running 2H24 on a Core2 Q9550 with no issues. It installed fine, it runs fine. Full stop. Whatever issue @Shrek is having is likely due to a glitch or problem with the very beta ISO they're using.

EDIT: I just booted that system up and it's on 2H23. I thought the latest Insider ISO had the new kernel, but it seems it doesn't.

@Onasi I owe you an apology.

It's seems this needs testing. @Shrek Can you PM me the link you used for the LTSC you're attempting to install with?

This having been said, everything from Core i3/i5/i7 on up should be able to run fine as all CPU's from that timeframe on up will have the SSE4.2 instructions.

Windows 11 LTSC is everything people want from 11 that Microsoft seems to be dismissing for whatever reason.

It comes as a base OS like Windows 7 used to or for anyone else that used LTSC editions of 10, basically the same except the upgraded OS level security backend and some UI differences alongside the updated OS.

When I compared it to Nobara a Linux OS I could not distinguish any real difference in terms of speed on an AM4 system, snappy, ultra-responsive and anything you do need you can add via the usage of Powershell.
Things such as XBOX / Windows store can be added back completely functional on a local admin account.
You can have it all without the drawbacks.

No TPM requirement, 2GB system RAM rather than 4, DX10 cards work with it and you can now use mechanical drives too, all things that don't work in consumer editions.

Gaming has been a flawless experience for myself.

To get LTSC, sadly there is only one way, and I will not be sharing it here, but if you can actually get it the correct way... do it.

do you have system with 2 gb ram? hence, even with 4...

Does this mean one can run Windows 11 LTSC on a machine that would otherwise stop at Windows 10?
you can switch off tpm req and enjoy win 11 if you want...

No apologies needed, we all make mistakes. You’ve been probably tripped up by the fact that MS recalled 24H2 from the Insider Preview due to nebulous “issues” and it is not in the channel, even though by the original time-table it SHOULD be. This nonsense makes it harder to keep up with what runs what.

Yup, everything up from Nehalem on Intel side and Barcelona on AMDs will run fine.

It doesn't help that the ISO I have been testing with is label incorrectly, thus my presumption. Still going to test it when the ISO's get released. What microsoft says and what it does are more often than not two different things. However, that testing will be discussed over in the Windows 11 thread.

@lexluthermiester
I can only say here that I do have the aforementioned earlier ISO and, so far, the behavior is consistent with what MS said - it ran and installed just fine on the Sandy i7 2600 and failed to even initiate, like what @Shrek described, on a C2D E6850. Obviously this is not 100% conclusive, but it does seem to track. In short, I definitely wouldn’t hold my breath if one is a pre-Nehalem owner who wants Win 11.

I know I work in the control room of a power plant where screens have to be up all the time and it's always saying update every week. Sorry I need to see shit constantly. Should've used linux but that would require more knowledge than our guys have.

Yes the consumer versions are bloated ad filled garbage. Wouldn't surprise me if another OS takes over as everything gets more cloud and browser based. No need for legacy windows that gets worse each release.

10 ltsc iot for me, see no need to go 11 for the moment.

You see no future for the largest consumer OS in the world with one of the largest companies in the world actively developing it?

Didn't these FUD threads used to get nuked?
