Intel Regains CPU Market Share that it lost to AMD, Latest Steam Hardware Survey

....but.....why...how....who would buy a PC today and go for Intel?

Dont get me wrong, im planning to go for Alderlake myself should that turn out to be worth a damn (its just a weird piece of tech for what we know so im interested)....but like if I had to get something now I would never ever go for Intel, thats just rediculous..(well unless the price is extremely agreable I guess).
it is more about price and acccesibility

for past 1,5 year, AMD went totaly AWOL with it's pricing, aswell ignoring stock issue... by releaseing even more and more new products, while they are not even able to substain what they released already

While even with it's flaws... Intel CPUs are still easly accesibble, aswell its pricing looks really good - ATM

imo there is not a chance EVER of AMD getting above Intel on the steam survey of CPU use, not ever, however great people think AMD is or however better than Intel they might "seem" to be, it will never happen. /end

Besides the fact that you just posted mega cringe, many thought that AMD was done for back in 2012-2015.

Yet here we are many years later and 40X times their stock price.

Given the chip shortage, neither of these are surprising.
There was no chip shortage a year ago.
AMD notebooks with non-crippled specs were still no-existent.

who ever wanted a graphics card had to buy a assembled system that came with intel CPU.. intel took profit of gpu shortage. They gave better CPU price for system builders.

There were no RDNA2 GPUs a year ago either. And 4000-series AMD laptops arrived - if a bit slowly - and gained significant market share. They didn't get a huge foothold in the high powered gaming laptop space, but got their foot in there as well, with the 5000-series blowing the doors open on that market with many models from different manufacturers currently available. Given that mobile RDNA2 launched roughly a month ago, you need to give it some time before declaring that it's not showing up. These things take time, especially during a global chip shortage.

Intel is the dominant brand world wide... this tells you don't listen to hardware unboxed & jayztwocents minority

It shows they have terrible yields they can't even supply the 6700m

Quite the opposite, most likely. RX 6800M and 6700M are both Navi 23, so supplying the 6700M necessitates there being either defective dice to cut down or sufficient overstock over 6800M demand to cut them down to move inventory. Them supplying the higher end SKU indicates yields being so good that there is no significant stock of partially defective dice, and that demand for this SKU is sufficient that they're not cutting down fully functional hardware. Besides, is the 6700M even actually launched yet? They announced it as "coming soon" at their 6000M launch event, after all.

As for what Intel being the dominant brand worldwide tells us ... it tells us that they have been the bigger company of the two for several decades, have (ab)used their dominant position into strengthening their partnerships and contractual agreements with OEMs, and that they have tons of money to throw around on marketing. It might be read as saying something about overall/average product quality/competitiveness, though such a generalization is deeply flawed as it glosses over their current efficiency and multi-core performance disadvantage as well as previous periods where AMD has been ahead in performance but Intel bribed (literally, and have received billion-dollar fines for it) partners to not adopt the superior competing product. A dominant market position says exactly zero about the current quality of their current products.

You do know this is "Steam" survey BS :shadedshu:

They're about as reliable as some of those Pew Pew surveys!
Yup Steam survey does not represent the whole market.

It's quite sad that Steam data is so inaccurate, it could have been a good tool. I think what they should do is to do a Per game survey(for the most popular game). Indeed some people would freak out that Steam spy their hardware, but i wouldn't mind (as long as it's just that).

So this way it would get a better view of what people actually have for game. Since i have steam(created my account with Half Life 2...) i got ask for 2 steam survey. One of them was on my igpu laptop that i used to play game like prison architect while traveling.

I am pretty sure company like Blizzard have pretty accurate information on the current market.

Yeah intel was bad for they monopolist behavior at oem's but intel doesn't bribe people to buy the desktop cpu's people are just fans of intel

Steam the most reliable barometer of the market

Cheap 10 cores.

Please don't write "tech" related stories using Steam Survey. It's a worthless place holder for people that don't know any better.

The Steam Survey, when I last looked, doesn't show a single RX 6xxx series card, yet I know a few people that own them and use Steam on a daily basis.

My brother hasn't had a Steam survey come up for him for a long time, well before he bought his 5700XT, nearly 2 years ago.

I haven't had a Steam Survey come up for my own gaming system since I purchased a 980Ti - that was 6 years ago! Since then I've added storage, changed OS, moved on to new hardware overall in my system, drop my 5760x1080 (triple monitor setup) and moved to a 2560x1440 monitor.

I've had a Steam Survey pop up on me multiple times when I used to have Steam installed on my work computer and I didn't run Steam all that often. I only opened it up when I needed to chat with my brother quickly. I actually removed Steam off my work computer about 2 years ago. My work computer is a pile of garbage compared to even my old gaming system.

This story is about as useful as the story put out about how Cyberpunk 2077 user base dropped over 70% after the first month after it's release based on Steam player numbers.....that was a stupid ass story, too. Of course a single player game user base is going to drop after the first month. Many of the people that purchased the game will have beat the game within a few weeks and moved on to other games. The story was just another way to bash CDPR because someone that had a beef with CP2077 and they held a position to post on a site with enough traffic to get people to notice put the story together and then so many other sites ran with the same crap.

Please stop rehashing the same shit that other sites put out there. Steam Survey isn't ideal to base any kind of useful news story off of - you can't simply go by their information to say things like: AMD market share is up or Intel's is up or Nvidia runs all over AMD for new GPU usage or AMD crawls back some market share for GPUs.....

Be real, 90% of users don't know who Intel are, still.
And if they do they don't know what Intel is.

Fans of Intel doesn't equal much of the market or user base, same for AMD and Nvidia.

Most people are buying a thing to do a something.

Or I wouldn't have a sideline as a pc builder.

11 series is very strong, and you can really wind them up.. not surprised honestly..

Lol Intel's sound is famous worldwide as well as intel inside.. intel is bigger than amd nvidia combined #chipzilla

There's no need to bash Steam Hardware Survey. Neither Valve nor TPU ever mentioned that they represent the whole PC market or the entire gaming PC market. It's just a large sample of what hardware Steam users currently use, and it is a good indication of the gaming PC market that actually has Steam.

Lol stop lying

What's that got to do with anything I said.
Intel's sounds are famous to your geek ass and mine but as I said most buy a thing to do some thing's.
They don't give a rats ass what's inside or how good Intel are , they care for form and function verses price , with some looking for style or OEM brand.

A F#@£ing niche of the market, us the enthusiasts and I T pros understand what's inside.

Statistical error? Because the trend clearly shows in which direction it's going...

Lots of kids just dusted off their old Intel PC to play Steam games, summer holidays start in June

I have 3 PCs with Steam on them in the house, two of them older Intel systems. I cringe every time the Steam survey pops-up on them instead of on my main one...

Lol, nearly the same here. Of the three systems I use steam on, the last one I got a Steam Survey pop-up on was my Intel-based travel/secondary PC, with my AMD-based main PC and HTPC both not receiving one in ... probably nearly a year for the main rig, and ever for the HTPC. Steam use across the three is likely something like 97% main PC, 2% HTPC, 1% (more in bursts, but none for most of the time) travel PC.

Sampling a large group of users does even things like this out somewhat, but can also consistently erase the presence of low-volume parts. IMO Steam ought to expand their survey requests quite a bit if they want this to be representative.

doesn’t help that Zen3 is overpriced and the rebranded Skylakes are a better value now. AMD practically betrayed their fans over a “5% faster in gaming” advantage.

How many times do I need to repeat myself: Steam HW survey is NOT RELIABLE statistics as it neither publishes method of choosing sample, sample size, spread/deviation, etc. Also there has been cases of multiple surveys of same HW on different accounts (chinese internet café).
So the editors should either take statistics from reliable sources, or stop making sensational tabloid news about nothing.

"Overpriced" is a kind of strange term to use though. Expensive? Absolutely. But expensive and overpriced do not mean the same thing. Worse value than Zen 2? Sure. But worse value than a great deal does not make you overpriced. More expensive than similar Intel offerings? Mostly, yes. But given that Intel has cut prices or brought higher performance down to heretofore unseen product tiers, that makes them good value (in what is indeed a major reversal of the norm), and AMD worse value, but worse value still doesn't mean overpriced. I'll agree that the 5800X is a bit overpriced - it's pricing doesn't really make sense in the product stack or against Intel 10th gen, though I guess they were positioning it against the 11900K? Still, it ought to be cheaper than it is. And they ought to get off their asses in launching lower tier SKUs. Until then we're stuck with AMD mainly selling expensive and not very impressive value, but great performance CPUs.
