Hello!
I have a problem with my notebook Packard Bell Lx86.
Couple month ago I had a crash while updating BIOS so as the result my notebook disagreed to switch on.
I spent about a week to find the solution. So now all devices works, but discrete video card ATI mobility Radeon HD 5800. It is shown in system device list but switching it on causes BSOD.
In main Bios screen I can see Vbios version 012.020.000.032.037943 also GPU-Z shows information:
302.png

So I cant find a proper vbios file in database and I`m not sure if its possible to flash this device.
Help please!

Hi

Welcome to TPU

What was wrong with system; why did bios need updating?
Updating bios to Motherboard? or **discrete video card [**latter is not good to do]

What is BSOD code 0x000000?

[Will help other members of the TPU community to assist further]

Assuming that the basic's have been covered off [Note: it is doubtful the Vbios requires flashing]
uninstall and deep clean driver. reinstall drivers from manufacturers web site [*If same issue]

*Contact the manufacturer; if still in warranty return to retailer, e-tailer or raise a ticket RMA

Hi!
I got a message about new bios version for my motherboard so i updated it. But something went wrong.
Old bios erased and new one did`nt set up. It was really hard to repair, but i did it.
BSOD appears for less than a second, so i cant see the number of mistake.
Also yesterday i set up a programm AIDA 64 it shows me that my video card is HD5850 and GPU-Z shows HD5800 so i can`t understand what is true...
I tried to uninstall and deep clean driver, then reinstall it. So videocard worked for couple minutes. Then many coloured dots appeared on screen and notebook switched off.
Maybe its a hardware problem?

O.K

are able to use bluescreenview application to interrogate minidump : look here

They are both correct GPU-Z shows HD5800 Series info
Then many coloured dots appeared on screen and notebook switched off.
Contact manufacturer see if they are able to send a copy of the old bios image; reads as if the vga card is not provided the correct voltage with new bios image
[have tried re-flashing the new bios image]? to see if it rectifies the issue

So my experiments didn`t bring any result.
I followed instructions that i found. First i took a ROM file in database.
I couldn`t find exactly ati mobility radeon hd5800 series, so i downloaded a rom file for ati mobility radeon hd 5850. You said that AIDA 64 it shows me that my video card is HD5850 is a correct information.
Than i made a dos bootable flash card and put there a rom file and atiflash.
Used command:
atiflash.exe -f -p 0 biosname.bin
But nothing happened, message appeared that 0 of 20000 bytes flashed.
So i got a couple questions... maybe this card is not available to flash? Or maybe i downloaded a wrong file?
GPU-Z shows empty field where BIOS version must be shown. And accordingly i cant make a backup.

Misinterpreted Issue
Why attempt to update Vbios image! [there should be nothing wrong with the Vbios image] DO NOT flash the Radeon HD 5850M

Lets go back to the beginning of the trouble
Motherboard bios update Yes; did not complete as intended; Yes
confirmed here - I got a message about new bios version for my motherboard so i updated it. But something went wrong.

For Clarity
updating a motherboard bios [ dose not effect the Vbios image on a discrete vga card ]

Original Issue
strong possibility motherboard bios update has corrupt image due to failed flash procedure
I repeat: Contact manufacturer of the Packard Bell Lx86 notebook see if they are able to send a copy of original motherboard bios ;

For Clarity

[when motherboard bios update did not complete as intended by the manufacturer; *it may have disrupted voltage supplied from the motherboards PCIE Slot to the discrete graphic card]

Advice: TBH; take the notebook to a tech shop before it is damaged beyond repair

I wrote a lettter to oficial tech support in Russia (thats exactly where i am from), waiting for the answer.
Now i found a forum thread, where we discussed a way to resurrect my notebook.
I did it in Crisis recovery mode by Phoenix utility. After it swiched on, i flashed original bios, which i downloaded from oficial webpage of packardbell support.
Lets see what tech-support will answer. But i dont thint that it will be usefull...

Today i tried ti find out what is written on BSOD. Made a video of the screen and paused in the moment when it blinked. So the mistake is: SYSTEM_THREAD_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED (atikmdag.sys")
Its easy to understand that the problem that appears is a driver of ATI videocard.
I removed driver and downloaded a new one from packardbell support page. Nothing changed.
Then i removed it again and downloaded from ati page using autodetect tool. Nothing changed again...
Finaly i reinstalled windows.
Still waiting for the answer from Packardbeell support...

Hi

First try this *Possible workaround
Uninstall and deep clean AMD Catalyst Drivers select: express uninstall
restart system
Install driver select: custom install [install driver ONLY]
download and install Radeon Pro to control application settings

If the above fails read below

SYSTEM_THREAD_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED (atikmdag.sys") this error is either driver corruption / motherboard bios or vga hardware error
https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/hardware/ff559239(v=vs.85).aspx

As already mentioned the motherboard bios did not complete [this alone makes the motherboard bios the prime suspect for any errors]

Start by double checking the Notebook bios [set everything to stock]
~check CPU voltage
~check Memory timings and voltage
next
error check SSD/HDD

General Info and *possible fix
atikmdag.sys is a non-plug and play driver associated with voltage regulation
This driver is included in a fresh windows install
locate the driver in windows system32
select atikmdag.sys and rename it aitkmdag.sys.old
restart system
reinstall drivers
Note: will need to unhide extensions for known file types [from folder options]

General Information here

Edit: "not one thank you; I find it really difficult to remember how to fix things without thanks"

Finaly i got answer from oficial tech support... as i thought the are good for nothing.
As we say easier to get milk from a goat then something usefull from them.
Their advice was to visit service center. (I waited for this advice 2 days!!!)

I wasn't aware Acer made that card for Packard Bell, is it the original or purchased to replace the original?
If it came from an Acer laptop it may only have a BIOS suitable for that system.

This card is original. I bought this notebook and didn`t change any part in it.
But this card possible came from Acer. The oficial tech support of Packard bell sent me information about tech services where to go... they are all oficial Acer

My first laptop was a Packard Hell back in 2003... Never again...

Anyway its not so bad. Fore home use only. It`s my first Packard Hell and i think it will be the last)
And about my experiments... oficial tech support didn`t help me, they just adviced to visit service center,
and that the main problem is not correctly flashed BIOS. Also they said: "...rom files that users can download from webpage will not repair my notebook. They are just updates..." To repair my note i need to flash special service-bios rom. I called oficial service, asked about this rom. They told me that their work will cost 55$ and couple weeks of time.
I started searching for some kind of service-rom. And found on bios-mods.com unlocked bios for my notebook. I flashed it in DOS mode. Then tried to switch from "switheable" to "discrette" card. And coloured dots on screen didn`t appear. Then i had to go... today i`ll continue. But it looks like problem started solving..
