Is my PSU enough?

Hello!
I have a Corsair RM850.
I would like to know if this PSU can handle 1x GTX 980Ti and a 1x R9 280x.
Checked those wattage calculators and supposedly my whole system + that R9 280x would use around 850W.
I measured my system on full load and it uses 400w.
Can anyone help ?

Can't speak for your full system as i have no idea what you're running but both cards together should pull between 600-650w on their own
 
The 7700K would pull what ? 100-120W? ( around 70% usage)
If the PSU can’t handle it what would happen? Computer just shuts down? or any damage could happen?

Depends if your CPU is OC'd. 100-120w is a good rough estimate though you'll probably be pulling less at 70%
 
Imo the PSU should be ok with what you have there, at full load you can probably get up to 650-700w something like that

both cards are 250w...at stock, full load, both cards will be at or under 250w each... so 500W. 600W+ is a gross miscalculation.

7700k is a 91W cpu... so if its running at full tilt stock, about 91W. Overclocked it can 120W on full load...


Psu will be fine, especially at stock..even some overclocking headroom.

For the torture tests 257+254=511w.

600w+ was just me making a guestimate as i had just woken up and was still in bed checking emails from my phone. I wouldnt go as far as calling 600w a 'gross miscalculation' as you so kindly put it. Had i outright recommended a 1.5kw PSU then you would definitely have reasons for concern. 600w would be a 'ballpark' number if i had to throw something out there at short notice.

That depends on the PSU. It should shut down before any damage is done. However, your PSU has no OCP, which should be an essential feature in any modern PSU, but I don't think you'll exceed the current with 980Ti, 280X and 7700K even if they were all running a pretty high OC.


Edit: according to TT it does have OCP, which makes it safer.

Sorry, I just thought ~20-30% is a gross miscalculation. Perhaps 'gross' was a bit too much, but the calculation was enough to warrant a different PSU when the OP doesn't really need one considering you have the CPU at 120W max as well, that puts you at 770W worst case. Even I wouldn't leave that little headroom left and I am probably the one here at TPU who doesn't overbuy on PSU wattage. :)

I also looked at the 7700k and that drinks about 100w if OC'd to 4.5Ghz, but since the OP is only using it at 70% It would probably be just under 100w??? Worst case scenario being almost 140w

I think the RM850 should be able to scrape by pretty easy so long as CPU is at stock or OC'd with moderation. Corsair have really beefed up the RM line over the last 6 months to make it more in line with the previous premium 'AX' line of PSUs that are made by Seasonic... Providing its a 'newer' RM850 it should be no different from an AX860 (A PSU i actually owned)

Go easy on the case fans and no USB hand warmers and things should be still gravy

The 25xW readings there were from worst case stress testing as well. Which is not a typical load and only hit while stress testing. Your own images (it would be helpful to also provide a link to the review(s) as well) show notably less with normal loads.

Your math, 254+257 = 511W was using stress testing values. For the 980Ti, you used the stress testing value of 257W. Gaming was 23W less at 233W. For the 280X you used the GPGPU result, not gaming resulting in a difference of 50W from 257 to 207W.

So while gaming, a more typical load, it would be 440W between the two cards.

Anyway, they can't even game together really so, no idea what is going on with the cards 15 posts in. He's may be wanting to mine which people lower speeds and power anyway, so there is that (potential) consideration as well. :)

I tried that and landed on a different review of a 980ti at toms. Hence the 'ask'. Thank you for doing so. It is appreciated and helpful to do moving forward. The picture, while its worth a 1000 words, the link can provide information such as their testing and measuring methods which can obviously come into play. We've seen users post system power as GPU only power before, to name one example. ;)

Again, a lot of mining doesn't seem to make cards hit the TDP and miners strive to use the least amount of power possible. they lower speeds of somethings (raise others of course), but have mining BIOS's that are faster and use less power, etc. I think @cdawall posted something about that in another thread.

I guess my point is, unless his goal is to use stress testing, the guy isn't even at 500W between the two cards. So his PSU will be fine unless he is trying to overclock the snot out of everything to which he may then hit 800W.

It's a well reviewed PSU both by Jonnyguru & TPU. Some fanboys flip out on the secondary caps but to quote OKwolf on the subject

"Chicony knows their business well enough to make even crap capacitors last forever. Heck, they're just like Delta in that regard, who also uses Ltec a lot."

It's not up to the current standard of offerings but back in 2013-14 (whenever it was released) it was solid and capable PSU.
 
Is this just for mining? 280x's and 980ti's can be power whores. I could easily max out an 850w with those, however setup like a normal person it won't use over 600w which is fine on an rm 850 if both the gpus and psu are correctly configured.

My signature should show what can run on what psu pretty well. That 850w Thermaltake that is listed is from 2008 its not technically even an 80+ unit since it existed before that.

I assumed as much, which is why I did not bother helping you. I am sorry that everyone else wasted their time to help what is the scourge of our hobby and enjoyment. Not only GPU shortage every release, but higher prices expected with next gen releases as well. Mining is a scourge and has ruined my hobby, and is the reason I am on integrated graphics at the moment. Oh well. Such is life. I'm glad I didn't help you though.
