AsRock, the renowned motherboard manufacturer, earlier today updated the CPU Support List for its LGA 2011 platform products with Intel's next generation Xeon E5 processors, using Ivy Bridge-EP silicon and scheduled for launch in Q3 this year. Along with the part number list, specifications such as clock frequency, cache size and TDP value were made public as well. Information from which we can deduce that the new chips will come in three core count versions, specifically 8 core, 10 core and 12 core parts. TDP ranges from 70 W for the E5-2650L v2, a 10 core chip running at 1.7 Ghz, to 150 W for the E5-2687W v2, also a 10 core chip but running at 3.4 Ghz.

You calculated core count by looking at the Cache amount, right? :)

I kinda hope one of two things: either those Xeons are unlocked or Intel gives us the first Desktop 8 (OR EVEN MOAR) core CPU.

Also 30MB L3 droooool.

E5-2643V2 @3.5GHz & 25Mb L3. Damn.

AMD might as well JUST take the Console Money, and Fold their hand for this years CPU market. Compared to Intels offering's , The AMD Diaper Cake 9000, (or whatever RIDICULOUSLY over compensated named CPU they are releasing THIS year) is NOTHING but a Death roll.

which one is the 12 core? the same for the new MAC?

The 10 core Xeon @3.4 Ghz looks optimal to me.

Two of those would be great for doing more than 1 video encode at a time. x264 in it's current state can't scale higher than 20 threads.

That's not a Sandy Bridge based CPU, that's a LGA 1567 Westmere-EX as far as I know.

why not buy a am3 socket 16 core opteron?

If the 30MB chips have 10 cores, then how many cores do the 25 MB chips have?

Perhaps the 20MB chips have 8 cores, the 25MB chips have 10 cores, and the 30MB chips have 12 cores?

Mac Pro is using dual Xeons, 6 cores each.

That new Mac pro is a single 12 core cpu.

See the mount bracket for one CPU.

I need single threaded power as well as multi threaded power, that's only on Intel side, sadly.
