LaCie has announced the shipping of its new portable DVD±RW drive with LightScribe labeling technology. The sleek, slim and stylish portable burner was designed exclusively for LaCie by designer Sam Hecht. The FireWire or USB 2.0 bus-powered LaCie portable DVD writer offers mobility for Mac, Windows or Linux operating systems. The USB 2.0 version of the drive comes bundled with Easy Media Creator Suite 9 for Windows, while the FireWire version comes with Toast 8 Titanium. The LaCie portable DVD±RW drive with LightScribe is available now at the suggested retail price of $99.99 for the USB 2.0 and $149.99 for the FireWire version.

Other than a sales gimmick does anyone actually USE lightscribe? From my understanding:

1./ It takes AGES to burn a lightscribe disk
2./ You have to buy special (more expensive) disks

It's a cool feature, but I don't know anyone that chooses to TAKE LONGER to get the burn job done. If lightscribe only added 10-50% to the time, then OK. But I understand it is typically 3-5X the regular CD-burn time.

Any opinions?

I've used lightscribe twice and it wasn't that slow, maybe 2 mins slower, but I'm not really a person who carries cds with me, all my music is on a mp3 player.

guess Lightscribe is more useful for industrial purposes. . . . . or just your everyday average pirate.

but if u want to print a CD with your bands name n logo on it etc lightscribe kicks ass even if their not as detailed in drawing up images as yet.

Tho they could have itleast added firewire support for those with firewire. those speeds kinda suck but for a portable I guess their around average. but plug it into firewire n it could be faster

Now if this requires an external A/C adapter, then its not much portable than any other drive

I love lightscribe. A hell of alot better than making the printed labels and sticking them on and alot neater and easier to read than a marker. Super quick and the discs are usually top notch, meaning no coasters.

How long does it take to burn an image on a disc? Why does the time vary?

The time required to burn an image on a disc varies depending on how many bands across the radius have image content and on the selected imaging mode (draft, normal or best). Since the time required to burn an image depends on the content, the following should be used as a rough guide only:

Setting // Quality Best // Normal
Title only // 4 min. //3 min.
Title & content listing // 9 min. //7 min.
Full label (with graphics) // 36 min. //28 min. //20 min.

THEREFORE, as stated by the manufacturer, lightscribe takes FOREVER to burn a full disk picture. A short (thin) text label might only take 4-5 mins. But for the true effect, ie. a nice brand logo, or brand image, you are talking about 3-5 mins to burn the CD (data) and over 30 mins to burn the visible image. = 5-10x longer!
