Yesterday during the first day of Computex, Rob Young - a senior director of Microsoft OEM group - said that Microsoft will once more extended the deadline for selling Window XP licenses with low-cost desktops until 2010. Microsoft has been under pressure from computer makers that produce and sell UMPCs, because their machines are still not fast enough to run Vista, but are better suited for the old Windows XP OS. In April Microsoft extended its deadline for selling Windows XP licenses to June 30th. Now "nettop" makers like ASUS and their Eee PC have two more years to sell Windows XP. Microsoft is currently supplying Windows XP licenses to more than 20 OEMs including Acer, ASUSTeK, Dell, HP, MSI and others.

Great news!
Along with many clients of mine, we are happy for the continued XP support untill we are able to replace the operating system with something just as, or more efficient then XP for pc's that shouldnt require overpowered components to achieve day to day tasks.

Great, because I actually uninstalled Vista off all of my computers. XP IS ROCK SOLID :rockout:

Whatever happened to "Win Lite" that was supposed to be a stripped and efficient core OS that would be IDEAL for Atom and UMPC.

Maybe that is still in the works. Im glad to see them increasing the support, but if they get Vista going good, Im jumping to it.

Wow... Thats good to hear.. A lil more months and Win7 is out hope that wouldn't be like vista needing hardcore eq to run heh... But might as well join in if it's good now... Having read many ppl here had good vista exp is enough proof for me, but now stay with xp hehe not enough hw power to go vista...

im sorry, but Microsoft is being retarded. They want to promote vista but yet there promoting XP more then they are vista.

It makes sense that MS continues to support XP esp. on the low powered machines, where you just cannot run Vista. An OS is required. So if MS wants to stay in the game, they need Windows on these devices. Otherwise, Linux distros will appear for them. Possibly with X exentions. And even become accepted in the corporate world. Then these things will be the hot toys of execs. And if they link into corporate HQ servers, then some clever corporate CIO might say, "we dont need windows no more". Let's save some cash and spend it on something else, like more hardware, or more software, or more training, or more bonuses, or more profits to the shareholders. Or all of the above.

And that would suck (for MS).

I disagree. Vista won't run on older machines, and not everybody keeps as up to date as us. lots of businesses/schools etc are running pentium 4s with 512mb of RAM... for them, Vista would be a stupid "upgrade."

Dropping support for XP would be disasterous.

Plus, personally I don't like having Vista shoved down my throat. Buy any new laptop now and you don't have any choice... you get Vista almost 100% of the time!

Davodelmo: theres no point in argueing with a vista fanboi, they feel that vista is better in every way on every system, i have gone thru this over and over with them, but they still insist its better, because its newer, oh yeah and because of the OSX cloned gui ofcorse, cant forget areo......

that comes out once they figure out how to cram as much shite into it as possible:D

using nlite would probably be better lol

I find it kinda funny that Vista is actually cheaper than XP right now.

I got Vista 64 when I built my new PC, but I'm now back on XP.

Vista didn't like my SATA/RAID drivers so I couldn't use RAID. I also get better benchmarks with XP now that I used to with Vista. I'm sure that some of that is the fault of the hardware manufacturers but at the end of the day I'm going to choose whatever WORKS best. I couldn't care less about Aero.. I turned all that crap off anyway.

Well said!

It doesn't make any sense. Isn't Windows 7 supposed to come out at the end of this year anyway?

@ Davidelmo

My school is running Pentium D's @ 2.6GHz with 1GB DDR2. They'll run Vista fine.

BTW, you thinking that XP is great and vista sux,, but have u ever tried Vista before?

Well this is good news, But when win7 is released and I see what MS has done this time round, vista or win7 shall be next at that point in time. I wish that MS would take apple's lead, one OS with great support. All these damm versions get to me after awhile. I have more OS coasters than what I know what to do with.

I wish MS would stop extending the deadline for XP. Isn't this the 2nd one this year?

Agreed!

And no, 2010.

I find it kinda funny that Vista is actually cheaper than XP right now.

plus if bought online from 1 of the many online retailers - they actually charge u 55UK sterling (108.23USD - i think) for wanting the system to be downgraded to XP....SAD.

anyway XP PRO SP2 is about 70UK Sterling OEMS vary from 55-60UK sterling.

as i look after a lot of friends & familys computers I happy that i can keep recommending & sticking with XP - not because i know how to use it. but because its generaly more user friendly & straight forward then vista.

Let's put this into perspective.
If MS can make money by continuing to sell and support Windows XP, they should.
Their goal as a corporation is to continue to make profits on their products, and increase revenue (dividends) for their shareholders.

It is obvious that the sales and support of XP is still bringing them profits.
They will continue to do this until the support of XP costs them more than they are bringing in from sales, at which time they will be running at a net loss.

Business 101.

Extending XP support and selling licenses is fine $$$$$$. They are just maintaining CR. They know what vista is and why win7 is being released early. Keeping the market share alive and eating off the consumer is what MS does best. You gotta luv em.

Just because your school has 1Gb of RAM doesn't make my example wrong. The minimum requirements for anything other than Vista basic is 1Gb of RAM. Lots of places still don't have 1gb and lots of places don't have 128mb graphics cards to run aero either. It is stupid for microsoft to abandon a large proportion of users. Not everyone in enthusiast like us on this site.. lots of places haven't upgraded in years. Why would they want to upgrade software to a new operating system which they may need to train staff with and which probably won't run as well as what they already have?

And yes, if you read the thread you'd see that I have used vista.. for about 6 months actually.

I am very happy they are extending this. I will surely use XP until Windows 7.

dosnt count unless you have been using vista longer then that because i keep being told i dont know what im talking about and never used vista, after using it for over a month TRYING to like it, i really wanted to like it, but just couldnt get past all the buggs/issues, and perf drop vs server 2003/x64pro.

it dosnt count unless you have used vista since it came out and like it, if you disslike it for any reasion they will tell you your reasion is invalid and that you never even used vista.

trust me, i been down this road here and other places, vista fanboi's will tell you its better on any hardware period, i had one on neo win tell me that vista runs better then xp on an athlon 550mhz(athlon classic) with 768mb pc133 ram and a 12gb bigfoot hdd.......oh yeah and he works for ms to boot( as do most of the neowin loundmouths from what i can tell)

im sure most people here would admit that vista wont run better then xp or 2k on that system but he was dead set that it did run 100% better and was just great.........

Hmmm is good to be reminded of how much i despise these threads all it ends up with one huge argument and personal attacks just for once coudnt we have a constructive conversation instead of vista/xp rules or sucks and fanboi stuff *sigh* :shadedshu

Haha yea it does seem to be the time of the year when hormones are at their height. My buddy just migrated over to windows vista and so far he thinks its great. I'm glad Microsoft extended the windows XP deadline so people have more options but at the same time that doesn't make vista a bad product.
