This was like the early wyse thin client terminals. These are good for office machines.

But yeah better have really good internet otherwise nothing works. So there's still that risk.

So Microsoft's response to the Mac Mini nuke is a freaking DaaS box? And at $350?
I guess it serves us right since the only comment most here can say about Apple is walled garden. We really don’t have a much better situation with Microsoft.

I actually envy anyone here who has successfully moved to Linux.

Apple should take note. Putting a power button on the front of mini PC doesn't always look bad.

What stops MS from selling a $349 Windows smart monitor instead?

Ohhh hey that's actually an idea that have some merit.

I do, and no, it's not. Value over time is pathetic for devices like this. Ask anyone who has bought, installed and maintained a Citrix based network. This "subscription model" version of Windows is trash and it belongs in same.

I know Microsoft is all about running after Steam, but I didn't expect calling it after dead Steam Link device...

Alder Lake N is not good enough to be in a calculator much less a thin client.
Seriously, I don't know why you are on an anti ALK-N crusade. This thing can handle streaming just well.
To make sure I could recommend it to my dad, I used only a N95 Mini PC for two weeks instead of my i5 8500 (at the time) PC and it worked wonders for light usage like web and Office tasks (as long it didn't update in background).
I was literally shocked at how times has changed to see this PC basically perform better from a i5 750 OCed to 4GHz from 2009.

No. Windows 12 is just a rumor. Seriously..
Well, they said Win10 is the last number... :D

Only thing this is good for is office administration....but Biden is out, so Musk will not pass this thin client for government purposes, unless it is efficient & cheap.

Does that mean that my crystal balls' output was right?

Back to terminal era. This is the proper way how to literally suck money from users.
Forget about paying once for OS and then having access to it even when it is EOL.

Let's create cheap-ass box that has just enough performance to render 60 Hz in 2D and connect it to internet.
Everything else will be computed in the cloud and then streamed back to the box.
Sell that P'o'S device with 300% margin and force users to buy subscription in order to use it.

This approach brings many positives for Microsoft, not only money: less hassle with drivers, less optimizations needed.
I think M$ understands that average Joe users will like this. It's much cheaper, smaller than standard PC, only requires
permanent fiber internet connection and a user will pay depending on what they wants to do, meaning how much
computational power will be assigned to them. And then M$ will squeeze money out of user by doubling the fees
next year and saying that it's normal step because you know, electricty bills, inflation, conjunction of stars, whatever.
