Microsoft Stops Selling HD-DVD Add-on for Xbox 360

Because MS used Toshiba as more of a tool to lower Sony's profits, and when the death of HD-DVD came around, MS did nothing about it, even though MS developed codec for the HD-DVD players. However, with the death of HD-DVD, comes the death of MSes plans for their codecs to be used with digital downloads, but that never followed through.

The point is, MS was there to help Toshiba win the format war, but instead they tried to use Toshiba to lower Sony's profits for an overall gain in console sales for the Xbox 360. However, that plan backfired on them as the PS3 is now outselling the Xbox 360, which can be related to the win for Blu-Ray.

EDIT: It should be known that MS could care less about a few million, why? Because MS makes billions in one quarter, meaning the loss has barely affected them. This is the nature of how MS treats its partners.

i see your point now, after reading that article it does seem like ms kinda screwed Toshiba

I was just going to mention, That Ravenas has an interesting link in his signature. Its an amazing read and pretty much backs up what Ive been saying all along, with a bunch more insight thrown in.

HD-DVD still has a use imo, but I don't think movies will be it...But that kind of room for next-gen PC games might be a good thing. BluRay is good stuff, but I think HD-DVD will make a return...but maybe not in a similar context as we assume it right now...

agreed - even though the format war is "over" I don't see HD-DVD going away anytime soon. As the need for a larger storage medium for PCs continues to grow, HD-DVD would provide a more suitable means of meeting those demands, as compared to what BR has to offer. One of the ongoing arguments in the format war was that HD-DVD is more compatible with a computer, whereas BR wasn't so much so (big reason why MS was supporting HD-DVD).

Although, in regards to the X-Box external player . . . if MS had been a little more vocal in letting people know that the player was compatible with a PC running either WIN XP or Vista, I think it would've helped HD-DVD out a lot. $200 was and still is hard to beat for a player . . . and if the X-Box had the capability out of the box, instead of having to buy an external player, the format war would still be a draw, IMO.
