No, you're not dreaming. The flickery 360-degree 3D displays envisaged in the Star Wars movies now exists as a prototype project from Microsoft. Called the Vermeer Interactive Display, the research project combines Microsoft's Kinect motion sensing technology to allow you to directly 'touch' and interact with the virtual image being projected, which Microsoft describes as a '3D volumetric/light field display'. In essence, it works by creating an image between two facing parabolic mirrors, which then creates the optical illusion of a colour 3D image floating above them, which can be viewed all the way round. So, could this technology eventually be applied to PC gaming giving an immersive interactive experience not seen before? What kind of graphics power would be needed to drive it? The video below gives a fascinating demonstration of this new technology.

Neat. Now I suspect Microsoft is working on the Deathstar as well....

Very clever, give it another few years though i reckon.

I think Micro$oft is a few years behind, a few months ago i saw this:

Edit: Posted the video directly, couldnt get it to work before...

This is the same tec used by Microsoft if you watch in the end where they show the machine's parts, but it looks more advanced, at least the visualization, a lot better...

Cool and all but ....where are the lightsabers man?

CES '11: Japan's Laser 3D Image Display

Ok, just how cool is this? Try to take your eyes off the presenter, if possible. ;)

This thing actually ionises the air in the room with a laser and creates a real 3D image. Not really practical, but a very cool demo.

"And is it dangerous?"
"It's dangerous"

wonder what happens if some living thing would be in the middle of those coooool plasma sparks...hey qubit you seem to fancy this tech, why don't you volunteer first?:D

Not me man, you seem like the brave type to give this a shot. Go on, stick your hand in it! :D

they could be, if Toshiba hadnt beaten them to the crunch

/troll

That flickering is extremely annoying. Globe looks nice tho

That mirror trick has been in toys for years now. :\

The touching part is interesting though.

That is COOL !!!

I just hope that we can get some killer holographic rooms soon .

Lightsabers will never physically be possible considering its a ray of light and rays of light tend to go on endlessly.

Never say never. Fyi, there are interesting new ways of bending light, even slowing them down, and we're not even talking about future tech that could be invented that'll make a lightsaber practical.

But you just did. ;)

this is sweet.

nope, lightsaber is actually plasma. i bet my ass that big bad lazor thingy could make one possible :rockout:

not that i would like to be anywhere near it though, that plasma is very heavy on the uv light, never mind what would the laser do if it shone on you :wtf:
