I'm on TPU since 2005 and in the past couple of years I noticed the moderation became extreme.

Like in real life discussion, it would be nice sometimes to make a joke, or even a tiny profanity, or even non-specific general insult. Some sense of humor.

But here the moderation over the years became worse even than government officials. Here you automatically get a warning even for bread crumbs.

God forbid if one makes a sexist joke, or post a funny GIF in response to a comment. Oh!!! "Only link or image posted".

@W1zzard

Maybe its time to do changes to the mod team.

Yep been only getting worse for many years, egg shells. I do believe some left to it too. The thread were people could say more outlandish things got shutdown long time ago.

People to dam sensitive these days, get a warning even though the other person it supposed to offend and taken out of context.

If you want more easy going were people don'ty get hurt feelings or even if they don't a mod warns you, TPU is not the place to be.

EDIT:

Maybe make a joke thread in the lounge, but depends how close to the knuckle the mods will allow them to be.

Idk, must be a crock been a mod sometimes, i guess each one has their own limit i guess regardless of the ten commandments

TPU has been there done it and it got shutdown. gotta protect the sensitive people, and not just tell them to deal with it as life is not a bunch of roses.

The mods have to deal with thousands of different opinions, personalities, and cultures all the time. Much more difficult than being a "manager" at some business.

I've had death threats from members.

mhmm unlike the news staff which gets paid. I volunteer to delete your rape jokes, or your shit posts about politics, or your nazi jokes. Then I give 3 points for 5 months ontop of some members 30 infraction history that has otherwise expired, then I wake up or check TPU on my phone during dinner and I have some PM where a handful of members in this very thread call me a piece of shit, threaten some kind of violence then for the next 3 paragraphs justify there agression to me while trying to explain the validity of there pornhub link and why it was justified.

I get to remember I have been here since 2005 just trying to learn and teach and now have the privledge to get called a piece of shit in my digital home.

Then I read threads like this take the public lynching for being a "really bad man" for the next few weeks before people lose interest and go back to trolling threads.

Thats just the big meanies though; I never forget the members that dont think we mod enough, but literally never report anything or better, participate in the thread they report or otherwise somehow expect us to be omnipresent in every thread.

1701810755333.png

Even though I dont give a shit about blue tooth candy dispensers so I would never visit said threads on a normal basis.

Anyway gotta finish some things at work I'll read more about how bad I am when I get home later.

Sooo let me get this straight: some supercharged incels can't fathom the idea to see a woman on GTA6 trailer, proceed to write the worst stuff ever - as it is, factually, the worst stuff - and get heavily moderated, rightly so, and now this thread?

Are you that insecure? Really? REALLY?????

Overweight 10 yo Toby at the back of the classroom has more usable brain cells than your whole lot, seriously. Mods, sorry to hear you're getting death threats and other abuse. It does come from human garbage, but still

I feel like since mods need to have the thickest skin and see everything from a thrid perspective, maybe we should have the next thread be "users are too soft?"

@W1zzard

Maybe its time to do changes to the mod team.
I tread the lines and I've got a nice bit of points to my name too.

I won't change my style either way, although I might adapt it subtly to appease sensitivities. If that bleeds TPU users, so be it. There are limits. I guard them. In the same way, I fully understand TPU guards its limits. I can often see eye to eye with mods on sanctions I get, there is generally a good perspective on it that can be explained, and I've also been in a situation where I did not agree with a thread ban and the mod saw my POV and reverted the decision.

Another aspect though is repeated offenders. I'm quite sure not everyone is held to the same standard continuously. Its not just points and warnings, but a bit of perception wrt the overall style of posting. And then, the 'sexist comment' or the tongue in cheek or whatever it may be has a place and a time, I think. I don't see TPU as being overly stiff wrt what's politically correct. Its not a bad thing that there are mods that guard some of those lines though. Things escalate quickly, especially when having fun, and its still a public forum, not a PM chat.

Overall I think TPU 'feels' like a good place to be. There is a reasonable space for free discussion, even if we end up repeating the same 3 act theatre again on subject X or Y, it is usually left alone as long as its within forum guidelines. And yes, there is a place and time for sillyness too... and just like in any crowd there's gonna be someone putting you in your place if the place and time was wrong.

Ironically imo they give a lot of rope to some posters.
I would be inclined to agree, but also explained this above. That rope is needed. The other approach is total strictness and zero fun, and that won't make TPU a better place, not in atmosphere nor visitor count. I think I'd be gone in a week.

Myself I like to reflect on my actions to find why I ended up where I am at some point - this is not a given for everyone. I think showing that ability though is a big winner in getting some more 'rope'. Do you see reason. Can you see another POV. Etc. Its what separates a hopeless case from a hopeful one in moderation. The best moderation is when everyone gets along in the end, right?

My only complaint would be too trigger happy mods shutting down threads because some clowns where derailing it. :shadedshu: This kills further constructive discussion and limits visibility of informative & helpful content for other members and guests. Yes, thread kills are not great, I agree. Its a bit of a whack a mole situation too. Threads are not people, and threads are never the core of the issue. Well sometimes they are, but then they're clearly troll or bait topics.

Just got caught up on this thread and have a few thoughts on this. I am one of the old guys who have been around here for a nice long while. I will give respect to the mods...they are not perfect, but they seem to always be pretty fair.

I got in a little trouble years ago for a racy profile pic of a scantily clad woman. Mods asked me to remove it. I put "CENSORED" over the pic and mods thought it was hilarious. I did what they wanted, and ribbed them a little for it, and everyone took it in stride. I also remember Mailman...that is probably why the mods are a little more strict than they used to be. Sometimes us users take it a little too far and the mods have always dealt with it fairly in my opinion.

To The Mods: Keep doing what you're doing. Site has continued to grow over the years and and that has made it where it hasn't sold out like the others. Wiz has kept this site true with his original vision and that is rare these days. He could not do it without a robust moderation team. Thanks for all you do! I know it is a thankless job, but I love this place and know it could not be what it is today without the dedication from the group over the years.

Agreed. No place for that here. Although TPU does still have those old posts from back in the day when it was normal for "booth babes" to be at tech events near naked, those types of posts are still there for all to see if you dig deep in the Lounge, but present day would not be acceptable anywhere, not even the lounge, which I also agree with, but just something to note how times change (quite frankly it wasn't that long ago that was a normal thing) and people do have trouble adapting sometimes. Not me on this particular issue, as I don't care about booth babes one way or the other, but I think maybe just reminding people that times change on some things, and we need to accept this and remember this is a tech/science site at it's core, and in contemplation, I think we can all agree that is not tech/science related anyway, those were just different times and every gaming magazine did it, etc. Some people still live in that world though, as well like I said it wasn't that long ago. I think communication is key here. Not saying it equates to a sexist joke, but booth babe images are sexist, and those posts were never deleted. Key is communication, try to explain to the OP in a positive if not neutral way, and not in a negative way, because honestly everyone is still adapting to the times we live in, negative moderation will escalate negative posts, and positive will increase positive, etc. @Easy Rhino 100% agree with you, but also that the booth babes posts should probably go to in that case.

I was docked points over a video game, and probably more than anyone else that's still active on these forums if we want to do accumulation over time of points docked lol. When I was docked points recently, I let both mods involved know that I agreed I made a general statement and in retrospect I was wrong, I also agreed that the points docked were justified and I accepted that. I just wasn't thinking clearly at the time as I was upset that such a great IP ruined a great opportunity. That is no excuse though and I need to think more before I post, which I have been getting better at, this was a rare misstep for me. to be clear, some points I get docked I do disagree with, but mods won't budge, and that is fine! I have to accept that and learn from it and move on so I can enjoy other aspects of the site, and there is nothing wrong with that. life isn't black and white.

@the54thvoid used to dislike me immensely I am quite sure of it, but we have had few PM's in recent years and I don't want to put words in his mouth, but I believe we are on good terms now, if not friends even. I actively noticed he changed his behavior in trying to improve as a mod after a few of these conversations we had, because there was some miscommunication occurring. I needed to improve and so did he, and I have seen him do that and vice versa, which I am thankful for, largely in regards to just explaining himself better so that I have more clarity about various posts, and it's a positive snowball effect, because then I get better and better all the time... where as other mod in past have just make me feel bad about myself in PM or even public shaming posts, it in turn makes me want to react with a "fuck this site comment, I am done" - I think we can all agree that is no way to be, but I also understand the mod who did that to me is probably extremely frustrated with me, and I hold no ill will towards them. I think 54thvoid is the best mod on the site though for presenting that balanced approach to someone they disliked a lot early on. It is not easy accepting objectivity when dealing with so many personalities.

@TumbleGeorge your country should learn to be smarter than dogs, no need for a rod if you use your brain to train them. I know you said it's just a saying, but I don't think animal abuse is the answer, even Aristotle uses the example of being smarter is what makes us unique as a species, therefore, no need to behave like dog in such primitive manner, he gives example of a dog too. (This is where mods might confuse me, they might delete or edit out this post, because they think I am shaming him or his country, but I am not, I have a right to defend the concept of dogs being hit with rods if his post is allowed to stay up on page 1 of this thread. Sayings can manifest themselves in strange ways, so it is a defense worth saying imo. I like tumblegeorge and most of his posts though, I hope he understands I am just saying here I like dogs.) so eh

@Sithaer I used to feel the same way about going off-topic, and I think the mods do a decent job of this, sometimes they allow it some, then they bring it back if it goes too far off, etc. That is a gray area and harder to moderate than outsiders like us understand well. On one hand if you let it go to long, honestly the thread might be derailed for days, which I agree with mods would not be a good thing and not the point of the thread, but I also agree it can be excessive how quickly they get things back on track too, this is not something I get upset about anymore though, because I understand better. @ShiBDiB I think it is important to have some level of free form conversation too though, as this is how we as a species can grow/come up with new ideas, etc. Overall it is about balance, I think most mods do a good job on this balance though. It's too much of a gray area to make everyone happy, and I think I have made my peace with that. Hopefully you can too.

@Shrek If you get docked points and don't know why you can PM a moderator and ask. I have done this before.

@ShrimpBrime glad to see you back, I was sad when I saw you were gone. :/ I hope you are enjoying that 13700k :) less benches, more games :p

@W1zzard I think you run a good ship and have good mods and policies in place, this site has helped me grow as a person really, I have a bad habit of not focusing, and sometimes I need to be corrected in my course so to speak. I know in past I made comments where I am glad they were removed and I had points docked, honestly I needed to have that conversation with a mod, particularly someone like @the54thvoid who helped clarify things with me in a back and forth conversation and not a condescending conversation. condescending doesn't help people grow, and the vast majority of mods are very good at keeping things professional.

@FoulOnWhite I think the lounge already has some areas where jokes can be had readily, browse the sticky topics there, I am quite sure there are a few, not specifically joke in the title, but "funny pictures thread" comes to mind, those seem to do just fine without going overboard. Not sure we need a new topic just for jokes.

@freeagent was upset with me recently for picking on him about thermalright heatsinks, because he owns so many. it turns out it was miscommunication, he didn't understand I was having fun jabs at him and laughing as I typed in a fun spirited way, he PM'd me afterwards and said it was miscommunication and we are good terms now to my knowledge. it is important for users of TPU and mods alike to be reminded that comedy doesn't translate well on the internet sometimes (this is why mods have to be stricter than we are willing to accept sometimes imo)... lost in translation I think is the term I want, but unsure. I side with the mods though on this because it makes sense to me when I think of it this way.

@Solaris17 you are not bad, that is a lot for anyone to take and I can see how it is affecting your rhetoric/attitude. I do think rape jokes should have a flat penalty of a 6 month ban or perma ban though, I don't think docking points is enough for something like that. I mean that has no place anywhere imo, never even heard stand up comedians make a joke like that, so yeah, prob perma ban, but that's up to you and W1zz to figure out.

@Klemc AI can't replace mods, too much nuance here as you can see above when I mention things like "gray area"

@bogmali is correct when he says mods are human. I try to keep this in mind all the time actually when they dock me points. This is where communication is key, IF YOU GET DOCKED POINTS reach out to the moderator, try to have an open mind and see it from their side, and have that brief convo with them, and move on one way or another.

@Regeneration @AsRock I hope you can keep in mind that the reason we are here mainly is we all like tech/science/game stuff and talking about it, sometimes we simply have to back off and make peace with it for what it is. I still have many good conversations on this site/threads, I am aware I can be eccentric sometimes when I get excited, but honestly would hate to see anyone quit. What has helped me a lot is taking a break now and again from the site, then I come back refreshed and more focused to discuss cool stuff that interests me, and I enjoy the community at TPU for that. There needs to be rules though too, I also agree with that. It is what it is and I hope you can maybe do like I do, take a break for a week, then come back.

My only complaint would be too trigger happy mods shutting down threads because some clowns where derailing it. :shadedshu: This kills further constructive discussion and limits visibility of informative & helpful content for other members and guests. Why you do this? Makes no sense. Just block the clowns from the thread, case closed.

as someone who has had more threads locked by mods than prob anyone else on the site, I can tell you they are MUCH better at this these days. Also, I have been told several times if I want a post unlocked and I can present a good argument as to why I want it unlocked they will unlock it and allow the conversation to continue. My hydrogen cars thread was derailed dozens of times, sometimes by me, sometimes I'm trying to get it back on track! They never locked it though, its harder than you think to keep things on the straight and narrow and I appreciate all the mods more and more as I understand this gray area better over time.

I feel like they are mostly fair and even when I don't agree with them I can at least understand their position.

I really don't want this forum to turn into WCFFT so I'm ok with them being on the slightly strick side.

Even when I've crossed the line I feel like I've had good conversation with them when necessary.

I've said this before we are all human somtimes we make mistakes and none of us are perfect at a min I feel they are doing a decent job.

Auto mod to rewrite all posts that dont conform..based on the data of all forum posts ever?

I had to Google booth babes...

Never had a problem with the mods on here, tech only for me. Got reddit or other places to message about other stuff.

Ai could replace mods
I hope that never happens, God forbid. With how AI is being manipulated today for nefarious purposes, it would be the thin edge of the wedge.
Can we just stay human, please?

I started off sympathetic to OP, but having read the entire thread, I think the mods made the right call.

but I don't think animal abuse is the answer, even Aristotle uses the example of
The saying has suffered over the centuries. Do not think that our people are stupid and did not use their brains to express it in such a short statement. Nor should it be taken literally. Animals have nothing to do with this. Acceptance of what you call the natural development of mankind is optional, especially when it is by no means a natural development. But I don't think there is an appropriate section in this forum to develop the discussion in this direction.

For what it’s worth, I believe that a strict moderation, but with reasonable people as moderators is the best way to go, which seems to be the case on TPU from my years of lurking and now a short stint as a member. That way any misunderstandings can be discussed and cleared up. No or extremely lax moderation quickly turns any board into a meme-infested hellhole which in time devolves into inevitable bickering over political and other eternally controversial topics. Overly strict, “knight-templar” moderation is obviously bad in a reverse sense that everyone just stop posting anything interesting or insightful at all.

There's a lot of discussion here about mods but self-moderation is just as important to create an atmosphere where people are welcome to participate especially in a public space.
Sometimes you have to read the room and throttle back on the flamboyance. A difficult thing to do in an age where everyone seemingly wants to be the center of attention.
Likewise sometimes strong expressions of opinion are important to drive conversation, debunk bad info, and discover facts.
Navigate wisely in wordspace and have a good day.

well trying to get people to laugh is part of the issue with OP and myself, for various reasons. It's an anon site, in the sense I will never meet any of you. I could care less about being the center of attn, but I want to have a good time, and enjoy laughing as I type. that's where the problems start, that's where the gray areas can also occur. like I said, the mods got a good handle on it and I really don't think anything needs to change, OP is just going to have to make peace with it and I hope they stay in the community.
