Agreed. No place for that here. Although TPU does still have those old posts from back in the day when it was normal for "booth babes" to be at tech events near naked, those types of posts are still there for all to see if you dig deep in the Lounge, but present day would not be acceptable anywhere, not even the lounge, which I also agree with, but just something to note how times change (quite frankly it wasn't that long ago that was a normal thing) and people do have trouble adapting sometimes. Not me on this particular issue, as I don't care about booth babes one way or the other, but I think maybe just reminding people that times change on some things, and we need to accept this and remember this is a tech/science site at it's core, and in contemplation, I think we can all agree that is not tech/science related anyway, those were just different times and every gaming magazine did it, etc. Some people still live in that world though, as well like I said it wasn't that long ago. I think communication is key here. Not saying it equates to a sexist joke, but booth babe images are sexist, and those posts were never deleted. Key is communication, try to explain to the OP in a positive if not neutral way, and not in a negative way, because honestly everyone is still adapting to the times we live in, negative moderation will escalate negative posts, and positive will increase positive, etc.
@Easy Rhino 100% agree with you, but also that the booth babes posts should probably go to in that case.
I was docked points over a video game, and probably more than anyone else that's still active on these forums if we want to do accumulation over time of points docked lol. When I was docked points recently, I let both mods involved know that I agreed I made a general statement and in retrospect I was wrong, I also agreed that the points docked were justified and I accepted that. I just wasn't thinking clearly at the time as I was upset that such a great IP ruined a great opportunity. That is no excuse though and I need to think more before I post, which I have been getting better at, this was a rare misstep for me. to be clear, some points I get docked I do disagree with, but mods won't budge, and that is fine! I have to accept that and learn from it and move on so I can enjoy other aspects of the site, and there is nothing wrong with that. life isn't black and white.
@the54thvoid used to dislike me immensely I am quite sure of it, but we have had few PM's in recent years and I don't want to put words in his mouth, but I believe we are on good terms now, if not friends even. I actively noticed he changed his behavior in trying to improve as a mod after a few of these conversations we had, because there was some miscommunication occurring. I needed to improve and so did he, and I have seen him do that and vice versa, which I am thankful for, largely in regards to just explaining himself better so that I have more clarity about various posts, and it's a positive snowball effect, because then I get better and better all the time... where as other mod in past have just make me feel bad about myself in PM or even public shaming posts, it in turn makes me want to react with a "fuck this site comment, I am done" - I think we can all agree that is no way to be, but I also understand the mod who did that to me is probably extremely frustrated with me, and I hold no ill will towards them. I think 54thvoid is the best mod on the site though for presenting that balanced approach to someone they disliked a lot early on. It is not easy accepting objectivity when dealing with so many personalities.
@TumbleGeorge your country should learn to be smarter than dogs, no need for a rod if you use your brain to train them. I know you said it's just a saying, but I don't think animal abuse is the answer, even Aristotle uses the example of being smarter is what makes us unique as a species, therefore, no need to behave like dog in such primitive manner, he gives example of a dog too.
(This is where mods might confuse me, they might delete or edit out this post, because they think I am shaming him or his country, but I am not, I have a right to defend the concept of dogs being hit with rods if his post is allowed to stay up on page 1 of this thread. Sayings can manifest themselves in strange ways, so it is a defense worth saying imo. I like tumblegeorge and most of his posts though, I hope he understands I am just saying here I like dogs.) so eh
@Sithaer I used to feel the same way about going off-topic, and I think the mods do a decent job of this, sometimes they allow it some, then they bring it back if it goes too far off, etc. That is a gray area and harder to moderate than outsiders like us understand well. On one hand if you let it go to long, honestly the thread might be derailed for days, which I agree with mods would not be a good thing and not the point of the thread, but I also agree it can be excessive how quickly they get things back on track too, this is not something I get upset about anymore though, because I understand better.
@ShiBDiB I think it is important to have some level of free form conversation too though, as this is how we as a species can grow/come up with new ideas, etc. Overall it is about balance, I think most mods do a good job on this balance though. It's too much of a gray area to make everyone happy, and I think I have made my peace with that. Hopefully you can too.
@Shrek If you get docked points and don't know why you can PM a moderator and ask. I have done this before.
@ShrimpBrime glad to see you back, I was sad when I saw you were gone. :/ I hope you are enjoying that 13700k
less benches, more games
@W1zzard I think you run a good ship and have good mods and policies in place, this site has helped me grow as a person really, I have a bad habit of not focusing, and sometimes I need to be corrected in my course so to speak. I know in past I made comments where I am glad they were removed and I had points docked, honestly I needed to have that conversation with a mod, particularly someone like
@the54thvoid who helped clarify things with me in a back and forth conversation and not a condescending conversation. condescending doesn't help people grow, and the vast majority of mods are very good at keeping things professional.
@FoulOnWhite I think the lounge already has some areas where jokes can be had readily, browse the sticky topics there, I am quite sure there are a few, not specifically joke in the title, but "funny pictures thread" comes to mind, those seem to do just fine without going overboard. Not sure we need a new topic just for jokes.
@freeagent was upset with me recently for picking on him about thermalright heatsinks, because he owns so many. it turns out it was miscommunication, he didn't understand I was having fun jabs at him and laughing as I typed in a fun spirited way, he PM'd me afterwards and said it was miscommunication and we are good terms now to my knowledge. it is important for users of TPU and mods alike to be reminded that comedy doesn't translate well on the internet sometimes (this is why mods have to be stricter than we are willing to accept sometimes imo)... lost in translation I think is the term I want, but unsure. I side with the mods though on this because it makes sense to me when I think of it this way.
@Solaris17 you are not bad, that is a lot for anyone to take and I can see how it is affecting your rhetoric/attitude. I do think rape jokes should have a flat penalty of a 6 month ban or perma ban though, I don't think docking points is enough for something like that. I mean that has no place anywhere imo, never even heard stand up comedians make a joke like that, so yeah, prob perma ban, but that's up to you and W1zz to figure out.
@Klemc AI can't replace mods, too much nuance here as you can see above when I mention things like "gray area"
@bogmali is correct when he says mods are human. I try to keep this in mind all the time actually when they dock me points. This is where communication is key, IF YOU GET DOCKED POINTS reach out to the moderator, try to have an open mind and see it from their side, and have that brief convo with them, and move on one way or another.
@Regeneration @AsRock I hope you can keep in mind that the reason we are here mainly is we all like tech/science/game stuff and talking about it, sometimes we simply have to back off and make peace with it for what it is. I still have many good conversations on this site/threads, I am aware I can be eccentric sometimes when I get excited, but honestly would hate to see anyone quit. What has helped me a lot is taking a break now and again from the site, then I come back refreshed and more focused to discuss cool stuff that interests me, and I enjoy the community at TPU for that. There needs to be rules though too, I also agree with that. It is what it is and I hope you can maybe do like I do, take a break for a week, then come back.
My only complaint would be too trigger happy mods
shutting down threads because some clowns where derailing it.
This kills further
constructive discussion and limits visibility of informative & helpful content for other members and guests. Why you do this? Makes no sense. Just block the clowns from the thread, case closed.
as someone who has had more threads locked by mods than prob anyone else on the site, I can tell you they are MUCH better at this these days. Also, I have been told several times if I want a post unlocked and I can present a good argument as to why I want it unlocked they will unlock it and allow the conversation to continue. My hydrogen cars thread was derailed dozens of times, sometimes by me, sometimes I'm trying to get it back on track! They never locked it though, its harder than you think to keep things on the straight and narrow and I appreciate all the mods more and more as I understand this gray area better over time.
