Well that's weird. I've just rencently changed platform ( went from haswell to Ryzen) and all I had to was to to click on modify the product key, enter the windows 8.1 pro key that i bought 5 years ago, and voilà. Windows 10 pro was activated. However in my case my error code wasn't the same, it was 0x803f7001 for me, looks like the step aren't the same for you.

I already moved a W10 retail license here at home. Just normal activation involved.

Now what I have found on past versions of Windows is that even retail, if reactivated multiple times will need that phone call, no different than the trouble involved with OEM copies.

It’s not tied to board but it is used to verify one installation he would still need to call. Sorry didn’t mean to insinuate it was tattooed

Did you even try doing what it told you and clicking Troubleshoot? In my experience, just click that will actually automatically fix the issue with no phone call even required with Windows 10.

The motherboard is the computer as far as Microsoft and the EULA you agreed to is concerned. So you have a new computer. And therefor you have to go through the proper steps to re-activate your copy of Windows on the new computer. If you have a true retail copy, that shouldn't be a problem. If you bought an OEM copy, then you'll have problems.

I would hazard that it worked because W8.1 hadn't been activated in a long time so the activation system has since reset.

That must be it, I can't remember when was the last time that i reformated my old system. However i now remember having an issue similar to the op a few years ago, and after weeks of unwillingness, I've called the number, and a robot gave me a serial number to type. At first you might think that it's going to be an hassle, but it's really fast, you don't have to talk to anyone.

the idea of having an MS account with a machine linked to it is supposed to stop all this pissing about.. MS links to the machine which is linked to the users passworded account and the machine or machines linked to that account.. if windows finds the registered machine in the users passworded account which in my case it does.. it says select and activate.. sadly in my case it dosnt work.. it comes up with the same bollocks message..

but as i have said earlier i have bought an activation key for £25 quid off ebay.. its easier.. he he..

i am also beginning to wonder just how many folks in this thread have actually ever bought and paid for a full retail version of windows.. i suspect not that many.. he he

Wow, seriously. There's two options:
1) Go buy another license.
2) Call them and explain that license should be transferred to the new motherboard.

Do one of them, preferably #2. It's seriously not a big deal. In the time it takes you to respond to this post, you could have it activated.

The MS account is only a formality to recover lost keys.

MS is just making sure its not on two systems. Can't blame them for that. Its just a call and fixed. Shit they have even let me transfer OEMs which by the EULA is not allowed

When you call, it will give you a long series of numbers back after you enter the numbers above. The numbers they give you back is your confirmation ID.

I'll say it one last time it is a robot! It isn't Asian, it isn't Indian, it is a robot. You read your Installation ID, it asks you a question, you answer, and it reads you the confirmation ID.

25 quid is well spent if it means not having to deal with them..

i also wonder why MS rips off retail customers when on the other hand they give out oem licenses for next to nothing.. dont forget the windows shop wants £213 quid for a win 10 pro license.. and their activation system seems geared to getting folks to buy it.. which was part of my original rant..

and why not have some real people to deal with customer problems in a civilized way.. they make enough money to do this.. but it should all have been done through my MS account that is what they told me the account was for when i set it up..

I swapped motherboard and cpu on my miner and faced the same issues , run the activation trouble shooter, for me i could assign the old miners licence to the newer miner just fine through that, only way i think.

I also don't pay for extended warranties, or other wastes of money.

just to be clear, i dont advocate pirating , but with windows 10, there is no need. i have Several Pc's running it, and all are on OEM keys, or free upgrades...windows 10 was offered free for a long time (years), i took advantage, as im sure MANY others did.
