MSI introduced a 4 GB model of its GeForce GTX 680 Twin Frozr graphics card (model: N680GTX Twin Frozr 4GD5). The card is further available in standard (1006/1058 MHz core/GPU Boost) and OC (1058/1124 MHz core/GPU Boost) variants. The 4 GB of memory, spread across a 256-bit wide memory interface, is clocked at 6008 MHz (GDDR5-effective) on both variants. The card appears to make use of a custom-design PCB by MSI, which draws power from two 6-pin PCIe power connectors, and the company's trusty Twin Frozr III cooling solution, which has been featured on several of its high-end graphics cards. The new 4 GB variants could cost about 20% higher than their 2 GB counterparts.

Well if you got Nvidia Inspector you can do super sampling effectively...

and... with transparent textures? you can load more textures into the graphics memory.

The 690 only has 2gb of effective vram, but it doesn't seemed to be bottle-necked. Waste of $

Crank up the AA and you'll get to the 2GB Vram cap eventually, I often get my 2GB Vram capped (2560x1600).


I just hope that MSI makes a 680 Lightning Xtreme (4GB).

Cooler wise it goes like this: for about one year a new Twin Frozr is "exclusive" on differentiating models like Hawk, Lightning and Power Edition

So when there's a new Frozr it gets implemented on the high end and the "current" design scales down to other models.

so neliz can u tell us the price? and a release date? :D

Are my eyes deceiving me or does the lightning model have larger fans?

If so yay! Next time I get an MSI card it will be quieter ( It is literally my only complaint, I love my 7850 twin frozr 3 but it's crazy loud)

7970/680 Lightning have 10cm (or 100mm, whichever is more impressive to you) fans.
 
I know this question can't be answered for obvious reasons (but I'll try anyway :P), Neliz, but is MSI working on a 680 Lightning 4GB version? If so are you going to use double density GDDR5 chips or are you going to put the additional chips on the back of the card?

Oh don't worry, I fully understand your position mate and to be honest you are a very good rep.

If it is possible though (if it will ever be released of course), just make MSI know that they should stick to the 680 Lightning (2GB) layout as much as possible so it can be fitted with the upcoming Aquacomputer 680 Lightning block ;)

double density would be the easy way to go as this doesn't require a whole lot of PCB adjustment, as you would have with a different layout.
DD was also the route taking with the 580 Lightning XE
 
I've already bought and installed it!

I upgraded from a Sapphire 5870 2GB to this one and I'm loving it!

Can't wait to test this baby out with Adobe Premiere CS6 on some heavy renders.

I was going to get the EVGA FTW+ but this one was $156 cheaper and had the same clock speeds and 4GB of GDDR5.

I so agree. I have the 6950 version and it is loud. Mine idled at 40% fan, unless I changed the fan profile.

Slightly off-topic XD how comes you have warm exhaust air blowing into your case ?
Would you not get better thermal performance with the rear fan blowing cool air in and your radiator functioning as an exhaust?* ( any other fans should be intake also)


*Heat rises after all so it makes sense to push air out the top of the case rather than having your fans fight against natural convection.
