As soon as you said temperatures got worse then you put a non-reference card in, that would indicate that your airflow by your GPUs is poor. You need to fix that. The reference cooler has the added advantage of exhausting the hot air out the back of the case which the non-reference cards don't do. You need to get rid of that heat somehow yourself, your probably cooling your CPU more than any component in your computer with how the fans are setup @gregorez .

I will try something again but i must think about it, because i just tried all possible configurations of my 5 x 140 FANS + 1 x 120 FAN (positive, negative pressure, location etc. What i do not try is side fan, but i do not want to mod my case right now (dremeling side window or something)

My best idea for now is water for upper card. Lower card on air.

newconroer:

Clocks are constant and i don't need them to be dynamic i need lower clocks for now because of temps in very demanding games, so even if clocks will automatically go lower in less demanding games it's changes nothing if i will run some stressing game temps will rocket launch again.

I don't use GeDoSaTo to downsample but to use it for optional shader effects like better DOF. when i toggle GeDoSaTo DOF in game it makes 7C difference. Sorry i have not tested downsampling in other games.

Will try something with air but i think water is a way to go for upper cards in crossfired R9290.

I have tested two apps to monitor VRM2 (Aida, GPUZ) all the same - not changing.

Can i somehow undervolt 3D mode only ? My cards run 3D at -70 but after few minutes in 2D (desktop) i get black screen.

I will try to create custom air duct and embrace cards with it some how (kind of air tunnel with one end starting right after front FAN)

You could set a profile for 3D clocks, with the lowered voltage and use that for gaming. Then do a 2D one at lower clocks with an undervolt, just not as extreme as your 3D profile.

When you have a GPU that can kick off a lot of heat keeping really good airflow to the GPU area is paramount. Consider possibly taking out the slot covers and getting some airflow down there

Is it worth having more dust than good airflow?
Please advise

How to do that? So basically what you mean is while I'm browsing or watching a movie, I set it to 2D and while gaming, I'll set it to 3D? is it automatic? What are the steps?

Just for the record, my used XFX reference 290 would get VRM temps in the mid-90s and black screen crash but a water block has totally solved the issues.

Find a guide on profiles in Afterburner. Save a profile with the clocks as far down as you can go. Then in the settings page to the far right is a tab called 'profiles.' At the bottom is a section for 2D and 3D. You then select which profile is for which and then it automatically selects for you.
